#1 Israel passes law banning use of underweight models

Post by frigidmagi »

bbc
The Israeli government has passed a law banning the use of underweight models in advertising and on the catwalk.

The new law requires models to provide medical proof of their weight, and for adverts to state if an image has been altered to make a model appear thinner.

Supporters of the bill believe images of extreme thinness are to blame for eating disorders in young girls.

Critics say the legislation should have focused on health not weight, as some models are naturally very thin.

Models in Israel are now required to have a body mass index (BMI) - a calculation based on a ratio of weight to height - of no less than 18.5.

They will need to have an up-to-date doctor's report certifying their weight when they go for jobs. Publications will have to specify if the image of a model has been manipulated to make them appear thinner.

Around 2% of girls in Israel aged between 14 and 18 have severe eating disorders - a rate similar to other developed countries - anthropologist Sigal Gooldin is quoted by the Associated Press as saying.

'Arbitrary'
Rachel Adato, the Knesset member who pushed for the bill, said she hoped the law would encourage the promotion of a more healthy body image.

"Beautiful is not underweight, beautiful should not be anorexic," she said.

The fashion industry has long been blamed for encouraging anorexia and bulimia among girls of an impressionable age by its use of very thin models on catwalks and in magazines.

Adi Barkan, an Israeli model agent and fashion photographer who helped Ms Adato promote the bill, said action needed to be taken.

"I look (back) 15 to 20 years ago, we shot models (sized) 38. Today it's 24," he said. "This is the difference between thin and too thin. This is the difference between death and life."

But Eli Edri of the Roberto Models Agency told Haaretz newspaper that the BMI index on which the law is based was "arbitrary" and "not appropriate for every model", some of whom are naturally thin and cannot gain weight.

"I know many models who are totally healthy girls who might be disqualified because of the law," he said. "Such a law would disqualify them without determining whether they are really sick or not."

Top Israeli model Adi Neumman has said she would fail to qualify for jobs under the new legislation as she has a BMI of 18.3, even though she eats well and exercises.
To the cries that this is arbitrary and not every model can gain weight. Not every women can lose so much weight as to fit with industry standards. There comes a point where someone is gonna get left out.

I pretty much view this as a good thing.

I'll second this. I will never understand why women who look like twelve year-old boys are upheld as a standard of beauty for women.

I would pick a woman with curves like Sofia Vergara over a toothpick like Kate Moss every single time.

It all started with Twiggy, a British supermodel who was actually that tiny because she was underage when she started modeling. Every model since has tried to have the no boobs/no hips of a 16yr old.

From what I understand, it's simpler but deeper than that. The concept behind a fashion model is a woman on whom the clothes drape like they would on a hanger, so the women viewing the show can envision how the clothes will look on their own selves.

Unfortunately, this industry standard created a beauty standard that created a weight-loss race and generations of body image trouble for women all over the damn place. It doesn't help that the mags at the supermarket went from having uber-perfect airbrushed women to uber-perfect photoshopped women.

Some actually like the underweight skinny look. Not me, I prefer a woman with curves, but I'm just one guy.

BUT it's not even about what guy's want. Women do this to themselves, and I guaran-fucking-tee the thought that crosses a lot of their minds isn't 'boy i hope that guy i like notices me now that i'm skinny' but more like 'haha now i'm just as skinny as that bitch over in accounts'.

There's a direct mental/perceptive dysfunction that occurs for a lot of anorexics/bulimics, to the extent that no matter how skinny they get, they still see themselves as not having gotten there yet.

These are very sad and tragic disorders.

I think it's more "society bombards me with relentless messages that people of higher BMI are either morally-deficient trolls (Cartman) or jolly, asexual punchlines. Gosh, guess I better drop some pounds since my value is derived from my appearance..." You're probably right in that it's not what heterosexual men want, but I suspect it's more a small cabal of designers and ultra-trendy weirdos.

As for the Israeli law, it seems well-intentioned but I wonder if a blanket BMI floor is a bit too broad. Perhaps it would be better to regularly test for malnutrition and the side effects of eating disorders rather than just size?

I agree with the spirit of the law, as there has been a trend towards unhealthily thin looking models in recent years. While I doubt the validity of an exclusively BMI based for determining whether the model is healthy or not (BMI is a rough indicator, not an exact measure, it's perfectly possible to be perfectly healthy with your BMI being considerably off to either side if your body is also off the average the BMI is based on).
That being said, so what? Models have been rejected on far flimsier grounds since the industry came into being. Too tall, too short, wrong hair/eye/skin colour, boobs are too big/small, hips are too wide/not wide enough, legs are too short/long...
Yes, the law is arbitrary and isn't going to eliminate unhealthy models altogether. But I'd venture it's going to cut down on the ones that hurt themselves to become/remain models, and the selection process for who does or doesn't has been completely arbitrary from the word go.

Yeah, that was my first thought too- like most any government solution of this nature, it's going to be an imperfect and blunt-force instrument, but it's realistically probably the best we're going to get. Having a relatively simple standard with the potential I suppose for a strictly medically cleared waiver for the outliers who are naturally that skinny/have odd BMI cases keeps it nice and tidy. Just so long as the medical waiver was held to a strong standard and not ye olde industry rent-a-doc.

Personally, I don't see why 'Sorry, your BMI doesn't meet the criteria' even for healthy models is such a big deal, given that 'sorry-you're just not pretty enough' has been a perfectly acceptable reason to reject applicants since the inception of the industry.

It's in the interests of avoiding injustice wherever we can, especially in the form of legislatively-backed injustice. Jim Crow it ain't, but there's always room for improvement on how we do business.

It may be an injustice to the model, but shouldn't the interest of society at large dictate here?

It's not like being a model is some sort of inherent right here. We can prove that industry use of models of a certain body type are harmful to society at large, it has killed people. If arrange things to where the fashion industry has loopholes to use super skinny models, they will. This is an industry that has been enjoined, begged, pleaded and more to change it's practices voluntarily and told everyone else to fuck off and stop be fat whiners. This event is the result of a long chain and while it certainly would have been better for self regulation to have occurred, it wasn't coming.

I would argue that some women finding themselves locked out of modeling jobs due to their body structure (something that already happens now anyways as Batman has pointed out) is the lesser evil then what is currently happening.

Oh I agree that this is far far better than nothing. Like I said, I'd go with something like state-certified docs for the purpose, but it's such a fractionally small issue that it's not something I'd beef over.

I work in fields relating to health and regulation, so I tend to go in for detail on how regulations regarding stuff like this is implemented and this particular bit is really a quibble on my part with what I regard as a pretty damn good law in concept.
