#1 Cain campaign crumbling after affair allegation

Herman Cain told aides on Tuesday he would reassess the viability of his struggling campaign after an Atlanta woman accused him of conducting a 13-year extramarital affair.

The allegations could be the end of the political line for Cain, who led the Republican White House race barely more than a month ago but has nosedived in polls after a series of sexual harassment charges and campaign missteps.

Cain denies he had an affair with businesswoman Ginger White, who told an Atlanta television station that her on-and-off relationship with Cain began in the mid-1990s.

The former pizza executive told aides in a conference call transcribed by the conservative magazine National Review that he would gauge the impact of the charges over the next few days and see if it created a cloud of doubt in supporters' minds.

"Obviously, this is cause for reassessment," Cain told staff members, adding he would continue his campaign schedule over the next few days.

"The public will have to decide whether they believe her or whether they believe me. That's why we're going to give it time, to see what type of response we get from our supporters," he said.

The affair allegation comes five weeks before Iowa kicks off the Republican battle for the right to challenge President Barack Obama, giving Cain little time to resurrect a once high-flying campaign.

In addition to the sexual harassment allegations by four women, Cain also has stumbled on the campaign trail. He raised alarm among conservatives with confusing comments about abortion and a badly fumbled question on policy toward Libya.
His fundraising also appears to have stalled. Aides who crowed about his strong surge in donations in October have declined to answer questions about his cash flow in recent days.

"It's over for Cain. On the heels of everything else, I don't see how you come back from this," Republican strategist Rich Galen said.

Cain's difficulties have opened the door for Newt Gingrich, the former House speaker who has zoomed to the top of opinion polls with the support of conservatives hunting for an alternative to the more moderate Mitt Romney in the Republican race.
Conservatives have failed to coalesce around a single candidate this year as several contenders -- first U.S. Representative Michele Bachmann, then Texas Governor Rick Perry and then Cain -- have risen in polls only to fall back.

'ONE MORE THING'
"I don't see a path to victory for Cain anymore," said Ryan Rhodes, founder of the Iowa Tea Party. "He was already looking at the end of the line, but this is one more thing to finish him."

Gingrich has seen his poll numbers rise as Cain's crumbled. Support for Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, has held relatively steady in the mid-20s in polls for much of the year.

On the conference call, Cain said the claims of an affair were taking an emotional toll on him and his wife but promised to wage an upbeat campaign starting with an appearance in Michigan on Tuesday night.

Cain said his planned reassessment was similar to what he did at earlier key junctures in the race.
"During the summer we had to make some reassessments based upon our financial situation," he said. "We also did a reassessment after the Iowa straw poll and we made another reassessment after the Florida straw poll."

The charge of an affair differs from prior harassment claims in that White says she had a consensual long-term relationship.
White said the two met at a presentation Cain gave for the National Restaurant Association in Kentucky, and afterward the two had drinks. Cain invited her back to his hotel, she said, and the relationship took off.

The woman provided cell phone bills showing calls to a number she said was Cain's personal mobile phone.
Cain's lawyer, Lin Wood, said the allegation "appears to be an accusation of private, alleged consensual conduct between adults - a subject matter which is not a proper subject of inquiry by the media or the public."
How do I express my feelings at hearing this? At knowing that the 9-9-9 plan is dead?

That should do it.

It's really strange how this primary season has gone so far. It seems like each non-Romney has about a week or two of being on top, then something comes up and wrecks them. I wonder how long Newt will last on top, and who will be next? I have a hard time believing that say... Rick Santorum might enjoy the support of a plurality of his party, but at this point if it were to happen it wouldn't surprise me all that much.

(Excepting Ron Paul of course, there almost seems to be a concerted media effort not to talk about him.*)

Also, this all speaks really poorly of Romney's general election chances.

*This should not be construed as me deviating from my belief that Ron Paul is a dangerous, gold-obsessed neoconfederate.

The funny part for me is that the voting hasn't even started yet!

Pfft, voting is so old-school. The Iowa caucuses are 35 days away, which means at least 5 or 600 news cycles for the media to navel-gaze, nitpick, and over-analyze while simultaneously advancing narratives.

I think that the people who support the not-Romneys are going to rally behind whoever is left. Ron Paul is too out of the mainstream of the Republican party, so he doesn't stand a chance. Huntsman is too much like Romney, and I don't think Santorum is going to be chosen.

So, unless Romney manages a surge or unless Newt manages to self-destruct like Perry and Cain did, then it looks like it's going to be Obama vs Gingrich. Which means Obama might win, since I doubt that Gingrich will win against Obama.

I hope he'll not win against Obama.

I am bumping this thread because Rick Santorum is now ascendant in the polls, at least as far as Iowa goes.

Someone hold me.

3rd place and barely double digits is ascendent? Also we should be so lucky as to have Ricky the byproduct Santorum. There's no way in hell that he could win a general election, him winning would be a fucking gift. Seriously if he wins the nod, I'll throw myself a party.

I suspect the only person among the GOP people who could win a general election against Obama is Romney. He's probably going to be nominated too. All this song and dance is just people brushing up on their egos and for keeping the media pundits and general public interested.

Romney might be able to contest the middle against Obama, but I don't think he can energize the GOP base into following him. Will the evangelicals come out and vote for a Mormon? Honestly, they should like the guy, he's sober, appears upright (not to me, mister let change my opinions so I can be President) and projects a good fatherly appearance. Which is fairly close to the ideal leader type for evangelicals. But he's an icky, icky, icky Mormon and most of them were brought up to regard Mormons as a damn cult trading on Christ's good name (please no snipes this isn't the issue). The Tea Partyers? The Libertarians? Fuck if I know, I feel some basic understanding of the evangelicals, having been brought up at least within spitting distance of those circles, even if I was never popular in church (my vices and virtues aren't the right ones bluntly). The others often seem like aliens from outer space to me, especially the more hardcore among them.

On the flip side will the liberal base care enough to vote for Obama against Romney. Obama has done some nice liberal things, but in lot of cases have beat a retreat rightward. So many amongst the left are pissed at him, some for good reasons. But will liberals see enough of a difference between Obama and Romney to fucking care to vote? If Ricky the byproduct, or Newt the Grinch pulls off a win, then even the most hardcore socialist hippie should be able to see a difference.

So it'll be who can drum up the most excitement among voters.

I don't think the Tea Party and the libertarians are terribly thrilled about Romney, but it's all going to come down to whether they hate Obama more, and how much they're willing to ignore Romney's shortcomings to bother voting against Obama. Same with the evangelicals, they may see Romney as a icky Mormon, but Obama has been presented as an even ickier atheist Muslim socialist or something like that.

If Romney doesn't get nominated, it will be fairly easy for Obama to get the vote. But if Romney is nominated, and I think he probably will be, then it's all down to which side is less disillusioned with the whole process and which side hates the opposing candidate more. Hardly inspiring stuff. :???:

Or maybe I'm getting cynical after all.

PS: it's also a matter of whether anything decisive happens in the economy until next November.

It usually does come down to that. I should point out that just because the right doesn't like Obama doesn't mean they'll vote for Romney. There's a third option, they can just stay home. The same goes for the left.

Yup, there's little chance that people who don't like their candidate will vote for the other guy, at least not one that has a chance of getting his party's nomination. It looks like it's going to be a mediocre turnout.
