Why wouldn't new regulations cover that? You're not getting any of the stuff already used out of the environment no matter what, but for keeping the industry from keeping using that stuff new regs should do just dandy. 'Yeah, I know what all the studies done by the people who you paid to come up with the results you liked said, but guess what, there's gonna be new studies, and until the results are in, guess what-you're not using that stuff anymore.'
Of course, I'm probably missing something terribly obvious to everybody else.

In the US, if the regulations change, they do not often apply to chemicals used before the new changes. Anything registered after 1984 is not subject to additional evaluation, so they will KEEP using it.

It is a difference in the laws between the US and Germany.

Are you telling me you can't make using a substance illegal once it's been approved? I get the no punishing them retroactively for having used something in the past angle, but once a substance is made illegal it's illegal isn't it?

That is exactly what I am telling you. The regulatory agencies are not currently empowered to do those things. Banning DDT took a specific act of congress as I recall.

Then I think that these laws is what needs to be changed, make it so that stuff that's already been approved can be called up for review. Then simply apply new regulations. That kind of change works more long term than simply retro-regulating existing stuff that's approved.
