#1 GOP Approves ‘Most Conservative Platform In Modern History’

Post by Dark Silver »

via ThinkProgress.com
GOP Approves ‘Most Conservative Platform In Modern History’ wrote: A week from the 2012 Republican National Convention, Republican committee members spent Tuesday articulating and affirming the principles they stand for in a draft of the official party platform. Led by Gov. Bob McDonnell (R-VA) and featuring other Tea Party stars like Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach and Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), the committee approved a draft of the platform McDonnell said “will reflect the heart and soul of the Republican Party” and one committee member called “the most conservative platform in modern history.”

Here are some highlights:
  • NO ABORTION IN CASES OF RAPE OR INCEST. The proposal for a “human life amendment” passed without a hitch — and without any exceptions for rape or incest. The committee didn’t stop there; they also adopted language that would ban drugs that end pregnancy after conception, which could potentially include Plan B, the “morning after pill.”
  • SALUTE TO MANDATORY ULTRASOUNDS. The GOP officially praises states’ “informed consent” laws that force women to undergo unnecessary procedures, require waiting periods and endure other measures meant to discourage them from getting an abortion. One such law receiving a “salute” was crafted by committee head McDonnell, who passed a notorious mandatory ultrasound requirement after he signed an unsuccessful bill to require an even more invasive transvaginal probe ultrasound during an abortion consultation.
  • NO LEGAL RECOGNITION OF SAME-SEX COUPLES. The committee embraced extreme anti-gay language, even rejecting a proposal to endorse civil unions for gay couples after vehement objections from Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council and Romney adviser Jim Bopp, who called it a “counterfeit marriage.” The rejection of civil unions, along with the refusal to include a line affirming the legal equality of same-sex couples prompted the organization GOProud to declare, “Those who have engaged in this public platform fight have provided distraction from important issues and damaged Mitt Romney’s campaign.”
  • REPLICATE ARIZONA-STYLE IMMIGRATION LAWS. Kris Kobach, who wrote the now mostly invalidated immigration laws in Arizona and Alabama, pushed for language calling for a border fence, a national E-Verify system to make it harder for undocumented workers to find employment, the end of in-state tuition for illegal immigrants and an end to sanctuary cities. The committee overwhelmingly approved the proposals, as well as a line chastising the Department of Justice to halt the lawsuits against draconian immigration laws in Arizona, Alabama, South Carolina and Utah: “State efforts to reduce illegal immigration must be encouraged, not attacked.”
  • AUDIT THE FED. The pet project of Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX) to audit the Federal Reserve has now been embraced as an official Republican goal. For the first time, the platform calls for an annual audit of the Federal Reserve.
  • NO WOMEN IN COMBAT. The platform condemns “social experimentation” in the military, which covers everything from the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” to allowing officers to wear their uniforms in gay pride events to letting women serve on the front lines.
  • NO STATEHOOD, MORE GUNS FOR WASHINGTON DC. FRC’s Perkins, who recently blamed President Obama and the Southern Poverty Law Center for the shooting at FRC’s Washington headquarters, requested and received a section specifically urging the DC Council to expand gun rights. The same section also opposes DC statehood, which would allow the District to govern itself and put an end to Congressional attempts to impose abortion bans on DC.
  • NO NEW TAXES, EXCEPT FOR WAR. The platform calls for a Constitutional amendment requiring a super-majority to approve any tax increase, “with exceptions for only war and national emergencies.” It would also deliberately hobble future Congresses through a cap limiting all government spending to historical average percentage of GDP — “so that future Congresses cannot balance the budget by raising taxes.”

I actually think this counts as the most REGRESSIVE not CONSERVATIVE platform in the parties history.

Unless someone can point me otherwise that is.

Though admittedly, I can get behind the Auditing the Fed thing.

That's about the only decent thing on the entire platform that I can see.

I don't know, I like the expanding gun rights for D.C. That said, they should get statehood or some form of self governance as the current situation is just ridiculous. As it stands they're some sorta of federal protectorate governed by Congress. Which... No wonder they hate it. Think how the rest of us feel.

DC should not become a state. But I definitely agree that there should be a form of self-governance afforded there. And I do agree with expanding gun rights as well as auditing the fed.

However the rest of this platform is entirely rancid and will do nothing but serve as talking points for the democrats. Well done, guys.

I'm against adding D.C. as a state simply because having a prime number of states makes for kind of a grotesque flag arrangement. A circle with 13 stars making up the circumference works, but 51? That becomes indistinguishable from a solid line at any sort of distance. If D.C. gets added it needs to be part of a package with five other new states to bring us to a nice, symmetrical, easily-divisible 56. Hello West Dakota!

Otherwise most of this is stuff is culture-war red meat that won't go anywhere. A republican house, senate, and presidency wasn't able to realize the fevered dreams of a federal abortion ban or gay marriage ban even in the wake of 9/11, it's not going to happen now. I skim the list and all I can imagine is "dismantle Dodd-Frank," or "gut the Labor Relations Board" or "appoint cronies to the EPA" or "sex and cocaine parties at the Minerals Management Service" as their actual agenda. Now, the constitutional tax ceiling idea is probably legit - Deliberately create deficits by limiting the ability of the government to collect revenue, then smash the social safety net as a "solution." Elegant, brutal, and effective.

Fine, we annex chunks of Mexico (what, it's not like we haven't done it before!). That'll get you your additional 6 states and solve the immigration debate as all inhabitable of the annexed land are now US citizens.

Once again I have solved a small fire by using gasoline.

I still say we need to give the parts of Mexico we took, back to them.

Aside from California. We can keep Cali.

Nobody's giving anything back to the French. Those guys are uppity enough as it is, Valen alone knows what they will become if they think they actually got the US to bow to them.

. . . Hell no.

I'm not letting my portion of the state go back to the French.

Actually, if I think about it, I believe my section of the state was part of Spainish Louisiana/Florida.

So yeah, give the rest of the state back to France. I'm good with this.

I ain't actually giving away any turf. I was just putting the metaphorical shoe on the other metaphorical foot.

Nevermind, there is some turf I'll give away. Louisiana can have Houston, Oklahoma is welcome to all the DFW it can handle, Kansas can have the Panhandle, and Austin can go back to the Soviets.

There's no more Soviets around to take you up on that and anyway I don't think Imperial Russia and the Soviet Union combined ever laid claim to anything but Alaska. You want to get rid of Texas, you'll have to do it on your own.

You know, Nazi Germany back during WWII did plant quite a few spies in the US South, since the southern accent was easier for German-born speakers to imitate the accent.

So, does this mean the US can offer parts of Texas to Germany?

You can offer to your heart's content. Just don't expect us to take you up on it. The way I see it, you (as in the US in general) allowed Texas to get away with that nonsense, you deal with the consequences.

Look, it's easy to solve the Stars problem. Just count North & South Dakota as one star.

Or, you could try to get Virginia to take West Virginia back....

I'm not getting rid of all of Texas. I like living in my part, for all the frustrations it occasionally brings me. Big Bend is cool, definitely a keeper. The Valley, ditto. Galveston and Corpus are must-haves.

Past that, there's pieces here and there that I'm keeping. Tyler, for instance, because it's the home of Earl Campbell who along with Sam Houston is one of the two official Heroes of the State.

And of course San Antonio, because we're not giving up the Alamo.

Again.

Just cut California into two states alongside DC's statehood, and you'll get 52 stars. Four easy rows of thirteen stars a piece, and I don't have to live in the same state as Los Angeles anymore.

I support and second this notion. Failing my first choice of Los Angeles falling off the coast of California, sinking into the ocean and forming Arizona Bay, that is.

Laugh it up, Rhoenix. My proposed border would put Sacramento in Southern California too.

We get to keep Tahoe though.

That would be quite an accomplishment, considering that your city is closer to So. Cal. than Sacramento is.

I'm sensing some self-loathing due to this proximity issue. Don't hate yourself for being closer to Los Angeles. It's only your fault if you stay there.

I dunno, that doesn't seem to lend itself to being well-distributed. You'd end up with a flat-rectangular star section and then lots of blue empty space on the top and bottom. Also you'd run afoul of the "13 is an unlucky number" lobby. I think either 54 or 56 makes better sense, I lean towards 56 because 7x8 is a bit more square than 6x9.

Possible new states:
- District of Columbia
- Split Alaska into a southern portion (Denali) and a northern portion (Name TBD)
- Taxachusetts, an experimental partition of Massachusetts where taxes are assessed at a rate of 100% and all property is held in common including children
- Metropolis Alpha Prime (The five New York Boroughs plus portions of New Jersey)
- The Bleachbone Wastelands (West Texas, state anthem "None will escape")
- Divide California into "Endor" (north) and "The Desolation of Smog" (south)

Any additional states will be created out of subdivisions of Colorado, with the golden spiral providing the new borders. Since this is infinitely recursive there will be no need for expansion.
