Dietrich started to move the floorboards to see if there was anything under them. There may be a passageway or something under them.

Underneath the boards was a thin piece of wood covering earthen whole. The whole was six feet deep before intersecting with a tunnel below. A pole ladder was leaning up against the side of the whole, allowing easy access to the warehouse from the tunnel beneath.

"And it looks like we have a rabbit hole." Dietrich said as he peered down the little chasm. "Anyone other than me want to take a look inside?"

Axel abandoned his own search and came over to peer at the hole. He whistled.

"An industrious band of thevies. I wonder what they could be stealing to be worth all this hard work... Should we lay in ambush or go down?" Axel asked.

Nijssen casts aside his cloak and spear, preparing to enter the hole.

"Let us see if there is a lantern we can use and take a look."

There are several lanterns in the warehouse, hanging on hooks. Taking one would be easy.

Nijssen spies a nearby lantern and grabs it off it's hook, turning to the mage he asks him to hold the ladder steady and starts descending into the hole, axe in one hand, lantern in the other.

The tunnel below was barely over five feet high, forcing Nijssen to duck low when he arrived. The ground beneath his feet was soggy. The tunnel was clearly crudely constructed with the a couple of support frames of scavenged wood thrown up to support it. The tunnel stopped at the hole leading to the warehouse above. The other end curved around into darkness.

The smell was awful.

"Ylagh. What did they do, shit in the tunnel every night?" Axel muttered as he got a facefull behind Nijssen. He noted the height of the tunnel and felt disquiet. It was an odd group of men who would dig a tunnel so small. What would dig so? Mutants? Goblins? Halfings? He hoped for a gang of Halfings.

Nijssen turns to Axel, "shall we follow the tunnel?"

"Be at a bit of a disadvantage wouldn't we? Bent over and cramped. I think it best to wait for them up here. Were we could actually put up a fight." Axel replied.

Nijssen nods his agreement, "good point. Lets see if theres something up there we can use to our advantage."

He turns back and starts clambering up the ladder.

"I agree. Oh, and there is another possibility.... Skaven. Especially with the smell. That having been said there are bound to be some spikes, glass, spare lamp oil etcetera in here"

"Skaven? Their a myth." Atellus chuckles to himself at the mages suggestion, while he grabs a few lamps and dumps there oil into the hole. He covers it up as it was and turns to the others.

"Now lets see if we can find some glass."

"Not very good at detecting deadpan are you?" Dietrich chuckled. "Even if they did exist, and I wont discount the possibility... after all there are scary things in the world and we have not found or confirmed them all, it is more likely it is just very enterprising individuals with poor hygiene, or a sewer leak"

A quick search finds a broken lantern with cracked glass panes.

"Right, well myth or not, something is going to get a busted foot tonight." Atellus wraps the cracked lantern in his cloak and stomps down, shattering the panes. He shakes out the pieces onto the floor just in front of the covered hole.

"There, hopefully we can cripple one and get some answers. Now, lets hide and see what comes out."

He takes up position behind a stack of boxes, weapons at hand.

Time passed and the shadows lengthened. The warehouse grew darker as the gloom grew, stretching from the corners to encompass the whole building. Boredom set in.

Then there was a scritching at the floor. "Quick quick!" a voice squeaked softly. "We will find-find and take-take while the man-things are away. Then get-get this slime-slime off."

One of the floorboards creaked and then it was pushed aside by a slender hand.

What the hell? Axel thought to himself as he gathered himself and readied to leap out at the enemy. Those were some odd speech patterns.

"Why am I always right?" Dietrich asked himself as he gripped his staff and readied himself to call upon his power should he need it.

More floorboards were pushed out of the way and then a cloaked head was thrust into the room. That's when Marcellous threw the lantern and scored a direct hit.

There was a squeal of agony and the thief fell back into the hole. Hellish, high pitched screams came below, receding quickly as the burning thief retreated through the tunnel. High pitched muttering could be heard from the tunnel below.
