#1 German police injured in clashes at neo-Nazi rally

Clashes between neo-Nazi demonstrators and far-left counter-protesters overnight in the northern German port city of Hamburg left 38 police officers injured, police said Sunday.

Security forces were pelted with rocks, bottles and fireworks and responded by turning water canon and pepper spray on the rioting groups who turned out at a march by the far right.

At least two parked cars and a police cruiser were set ablaze.

Police, who deployed 4,400 officers to keep the peace between the two sides, took 63 demonstrators into custody and formally arrested another 17.

Around 3,500 people, mainly from the hard left, turned out to block a procession of about 700 right-wing skinheads, while more than 10,000 people attended a separate, peaceful rally against neo-Nazis in front of city hall.
Police chief Wolfgang Kopitzsch said he was pleased "that so many people demonstrated peacefully for an open and tolerant Hamburg" but said "nothing could justify" the clashes.

Organised marches by neo-Nazis in Germany generally meet with much larger counter-protests but are often accompanied by violence between the far left and far right.

What is it with extremist that they feel the right to assault people out on the streets?

I got nothing but contempt for Neo Nazis and my heart doesn't exactly bleed for the sons of bitches. At the same time, we're suppose to be free and open societies. Even these vile assholes should be able to expect to be able to walk the street freely as long as they obey the law.

By all means counter protest, let them know they ain't welcome and they aren't gonna get a damn thing they want. Mock them, deride them, prove them wrong but do not lay a hand on them save in self defense and the defense of others. Rioting with them in the streets only chews at however minorly at the foundations of a free state. Hell, they're not a big enough threat to be worth street fighting and likely never will be again. The people who start this violence do neither liberty or democracy no service.

Funny thing about that. Their existence is illegal under german law. They go out and start chanting Heil Hitler while carrying swastikas, and they get arrested, last I checked.

Considering only 63 people were detained and 17 arrested on both sides, that law has been changed or does not exist is my guess.

Either that, or the Nazis are Nazis, but not legally. In the sense that they are obviously skinheads, but may be exploiting a loophole such that they are not violating a law.

Follow Up: The National Democratic Party is basically a neo-nazi party that manages to skirt german anti-nazi laws by using code and dog-whistles.

The term is 'bash the fash' and there's a segment that argues that it's the only reasonable way to contain fascism because the law won't.

This concept ignores the fact that politics by street brawl tends to end up favoring the fascists.

I know. I was just pointing out that public nazism is illegal in germany, and that by definition they are not following the law when they have demonstrations.
