Your favourite editing programs

Today I wanted to make a BULLSHIT DEFEATED (picture not inlined because of how I have my server set up) stamp picture for use on my forums and I started to think about how much I miss MS Paint.

There are 3 kinds of editors in the world: the easy to use ones that lack advanced powers, the super advanced ones that take years to figure anything out on, and the worthless ones.

My favourite editors are:

TEXT:

gedit : a pretty simple text editor (honestly, is there any other kind that is useful?) that has some excellent features like:
syntax highlighting for writing code
tabbed windows for writing multiple files at once (againa godsend for programming)
Easy, simple editing and a nice find and replace function.

vi : the default Unix editor packed with power yet still rather simple. It runs in text mode so I don't need to waste my time with a gui to use it. It packs multiple modes includeing HTML rendering, hex editing, and regular typing mode. It also has syntax highlighting, but I prefer gedit's.

I don't even know the true extent of its power, but it is still simple enough to use regardless. I love it but gedit with simple mouse editing, etc, makes vi fall into second place.

notepad : If I am using Windows, I will have a notepad window open. Simple, fast, no bullshit. I put it below vi and gedit because it lacks some of their power that I have grown used to, but notepad served me well for many years and I always keep it around for quick jobs.

edit : the default editor from MS-DOS. Pretty customizabilty, ease of use, and it gets the job done. It saved my ass plenty of times, and I use it for quick writing. I am a plenty big fan. Notepad goes above it simply of how notepad doesn't autoindent new lines and mixes in better with the rest of the Windows environment.

FANCY TEXT:

wordpad: quick, simple, powerful enough. I use it for any fancy editing on Windows.

Fancy text isn't something I use often, so I don't have much to say about other programs.

GRAPHICS:

the GIMP: this is one of those that takes a long time to learn. I suck with it, but I love it. It has insane power.

MS Paint: my second favourite graphics editor. Say what you may about it, it gets the job done. It is very easy to use and quick to finish its work. I even have it set up to Wine on my Linux box.

There are a few other ones I use with Linux, but GIMP and Paint are the two that stand out.

SOUND:

Simple Windows sound recorder is about all I've used here (aside from some file format conversion programs). It has some limitations, but I don't do alot of this so it is ok.

For MIDIs, I use a program called Anvil Studio on Windows and I have not yet found a good one for Linux. I rather enjoy working with MIDI, despite my lack of musical prowess.



So, what are some of your fav editors for various tasks?

For text, I use WordPad for just about everything, including fanfic writing. It gets the job done, and is easy to use. If I need more advanced features, I'll use WordPerfect (my computer came with that shitty program instead of MSWord, and I've hated it ever since :x).

For images, I use MSPaint. Again, simple and easy to use. For more advanced image stuff, I use IrfanView and Paint.NET. Really, the later combines the abilities of Paint and IrfanView, but it's more complex to use than either program, and obscures parts of large images with six different damn windows. I especially hate how you have to select a piece of an image with one function, then select another just to move it! For someone so used to MSPaint's simpler abilites, this is particularly irksome.

Text- I don't do much code work (and only under duress or payment), but for that I'll use Notepad. For writing, I'll use MS Word, though I prefer Wordperfect. Why? Because every time I've installed Wordperfect in the past few years, shortly thereafter I ended up with an OS crash for one reason or another, reformat and everything. Now, Wordperfect had absolutely nothing to do with any of these crashes, but I've gotten paranoid about the software being on my system.

Images- Adobe Photoshop, for what little work I do.

Sound- Haven't done any sound editing for years, but when I used to do .wav mixes, I'd use Sound Forge. I don't even know if it's still around.
