Illinois Senate ends death penalty

The Senate’s 32-25 vote sends the legislation to Gov. Quinn, who advocated keeping the moratorium on executions first imposed by former Gov. George Ryan but so far has been silent about the abolition legislation.

As an opponent of the death penalty, I applaud this and hope that other states will follow suit.

And as a proponent of the death penalty, I have to admit that this was inevitable, at least for Illinois.
