If Starfleet was real, would you join?

I am sitting here listing to Shatner and Stewart say those wonderful words:

Space... the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. It's five year mission to explore strange, new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilisations. To boldly go where no man has gone before!

And it gets me once again dreaming how awesome that would be. This is one of the greatest appeals of Star Trek in my opinion: it is a vehicle of fantastic dreams.

Now, imagine for a moment if Starfleet, really existed, with those magical words as their mission. Would you join it?

I certainly would. Imagine how awesome it would be to actually be able to look out the window and see stars, planets, nebulae. Telescopes are awesome already, but I don't think they can match up to being there. So many wonders to be seen, there is no way I would give up that chance. Let's see what's out there.

I'd join. Btw the red shirt thing would only apply to tos I belive. The gold shirts where targeted in tng+. lol. Seriosly though. If we had a starfleet, I doubt we would wear their uniforms. They would be a military cut and not color coordinated. I'd imagine a lot like the modern navy's. Think hunt for red october.

I don't think the red shirt situation would be at all as bad in the real galaxy as it was in Star Trek. First off, real life doesn't need random throwaway extras to die to know that caution is needed, secondly, there might not even be any dangerous life out there to kill our poor redshirts.

But, you know, even dying a redshirt wouldn't be so bad. Just think about all the things that he would have been able to do and see before buying it. I'd be pretty excited to be in space, even if my life expectancy wasn't so good up there.

To explore the galaxy, breath the atmosphere on a far away planet. Yes. That is the reason i'd join. Holodeck's arn't by any means star fleet exclusive technology. I would use them for far better reasons then porn. you can do things you normally could not do irl. Visit places that don't exist outside of fiction etc.

I'll join, redshirt if I have to - and in fact, given my qualifications there's nothing I would be better suited for other than as pistol-handler-and-bull's-eye-target-for-alien-critters.

I don't know if I would join or not. It would depend on the prospects for colonization on other planets. If there were a lot of pretty decent to good planets I could help colonize, I'd probably go do that. If we didn't know of many, and Starfleet was out looking for them, I'd want to help in the search.

I've stated that I don't want to join the Federation (or similar) over a subjective matter, and I've stated a reason, I don't have to make it one that you like.

TOS Starfleet? In a New York second. Even if I'm just a random redshirt, imagine what it's like to see strange worlds up close, to study a nebula from within, to be close to a sun that isn't ours...
TNG-hell, why not? The communism (and the goofy uniform) are a small turndown but it's worth it to get out among the stars. And it's not like the UFP is the only place there is, E-D visited plenty of places that seemed to be still capitalistic, I'm sure I'd manage.

For the record, I had in mind that Starfleet would exist on a modern day Earth (putting aside problems like powering the warp drive with modern technology), with concepts like anyone could sign up or try out for the academy. The Academy would be government funded, so you don't have to worry about not being able to pay your tuition or hassles like that. I really doubt it would be a military organisation, probably more of an extension of NASA with a bigger budget, but it might be.

But details like that are pretty much beside the point I was going for. I'm really asking if you could live the dream, even with all the dangers and hardships associated with it, would you?

Honestly, yes, although I would prefer to join the Marines, I'm more comfortable as ground pounder than a sailor. While Starfleet might offically be a extension of NASA I don't see it going anywhere without some military personal. The void is dark, cold and dangerous, besides most astronauts are ex-military or serving.

Most assuredly. Though I'm not certain what role I could fulfill, I'm admittedly not technical, not the most science minded, or handy with my hands.

But yes, I would gladly join Starfleet if it exsisted today, as long as it wasn't you know...like Voyager.
