Is there any appeal to going to Canadia (where I'm headed)?

You don't have to pick a sign that matches your class. I just am because us Moxie folks get sweet, sweet stuff (like Torso Awareness and clockwork goodness) and I'd like to keep some of my buffs (Polka of Plenty, Ode to Booze, Phat Loot Lyric, etc) for going into other classes later.

Its not bad if you go the hardcore Teetoller route since you can buy meals at the restaurant. Plus you can use the mind control device to raise the stats of monsters and get more experience points as well as make the Maple Leaf famliar. You also get a shot at the ultrarare hockey stick. If you are going hardcore Boozetafarian or hardcore no path, you should go to the Moxie area instead for the brewery. If you are going hardcore Oxygenarian, you should go to the Muscle area since it easier to make a Meat Maid and the Meat car.
