"Two." Lei answered for him. "At least, that is my best guess." As she spoke the fridge opened and a can of soda was removed and carried over by one of her shadowy tendrils. Again, there was no sign of strain or concentration, or that she even noticed it happening until she took the can from it. "He doesn't look much like a hero, does he..." she said, glancing over to where Gravitas and Legacies were talking.

"Nope, but looks can be decieving. The bravest man I ever knew didn't look like much. Short, scrawny. Wouldn't look twice at him." He grabbed another cider out of his fridge and twisted off the non twist off cap. "He could have made a fortune in the private sector. He could have been safe. Instead he chose to step up and make people's lives better."
He held up his bottle. "I would say to absent friends, but that would be a lie. We weren't friends. But he was a good man." He took a long drink.

She raised her soda, but couldn't help but notice the emotions behind the toast. Sorrow, regret, a thin current of murderous, sadistic rage that caught her attention fully. "That was ... unpleasant," she commented absently. "I'll not ask further, unless you wish to talk of it." She drank herself, thinking quietly of Ember, and what she'd think to see Lei here.
The sudden though of Ember hitting on Blackheart got her choked.

"Ahh. That," replied Blackheart. "Let's just say there might be diplomatic reasons for listing his death as a vanilla car accident. For someone who was officially a minor government employee, his family recieved quite a good pension. Someone who might be inclined towards cynicism might believe that he was somehow involved with the with that mess in Argentina which resulted in the death of the terrorist Havoc and his followers."

Lei coughed to clear her windpipe, trying to recall that incident. "Was that the small compound that some say was burnt clean of all living inhabitants?" Her black irisless eyes gave away nothing of where she could have heard that information. "The news had very little about it... but there were many rumors."

"A cynical mind might think that the fires were primarily to destroy evidence of the hit team that took them out. The really well informed might remember that Havoc wore fire resistant body armour so when he was running at four hundred kilometers an hour his clothes didn't burn off him."

"That was something I'd heard, yes." Lei replied simply, taking a drink from the soda. "It made certain elements think twice about trying the same thing for a little while, I understand"

Lei winced, both at the memory and at the rage still boiling within Blackheart. "Gravitas is right to suggest that metas need better outlets for our abilities," she mused quietly, "Yet even then, there will be some that are ... broken inside." Bat-shit insane would be a better term. Power-mad was only the start.
Time to get to safer subjects. "I wonder if you would have taken Ember into the team."

Legacies smiled sadly. "And you are so certain that the same thing will happen here Gravitas? These are different worlds, many metas here don't have that node you spoke of, that means that the aberrations you spoke of will not happen.""Oh, there are reasons to hide." Gravitas said after a moment, the sombre mood still infecting him. "But they're why I don't. If folks see the terrible and powerful No-.. Metas as things with masks, never showing their faces, it'll get worse. It's a little bit harder to hate a guy who looks as nerdy as I do."
A tendril slipped out and grabbed another slice of pizza, the last one left. "Humans will hate or love as they please, something as trivial as a face will not change that in the long run."

He shrugged. "Not my call. I never knew the lady so I can't say how well we would have gotten along."

That comment got a touch of amused mischief. "You think you have trouble now?" she chuckled, one of the few times she'd honestly laughed in front of him. "Her temper as hot as the fires she threw, and very blunt in her opinions." More amusement, her eyes sly as she glanced his way. "And a passion for dark, brooding, powerful metas. Sound like anyone you might recognize?"
The little empath was teasing him ... again.

He cracked a smile. "Nah. She was probably too good looking to be anyone who would hang around me."

"That attitude would have drawn her like bees to honey." Lei answered honestly. "Within a month, half her clothing would be here with you." It had happened before, with at least four of her lovers. Of course, the breakups had been ... fiery.Cynical Cat wrote:He cracked a smile. "Nah. She was probably too good looking to be anyone who would hang around me."

"I've found myself hard to think optimistically." Gravitas admitted. "At least on this. But I'll hope you're right." The Nova watched the tendril snag the pizza, and he clucked his tongue. "And hope I'm faster the next time there's food out in the open."Charon wrote:Legacies smiled sadly. "And you are so certain that the same thing will happen here Gravitas? Legacies chomped down on the pizza slice. "Not to worry, Blackheart is ordering wings. The three of us will have plenty to eat."

The intercommed buzzed and Blackheart let the delivery guy in. He peeled off several bills and hand them to the blonde kid with the two jumbo buckets. "Keep the change," he said and then returned to the kitchen with his booty.

As the heroes were relaxing, or rather attempting to relax, gorging themselves on food and drink, chatting and arguing and singing badly off key to horrible music, close by mayham was abound.
Tremors rocked the main branch building of Millenium City Bank and Trust. Glass shattered and tinkled to the ground, plaster fell from the ceiling and cracks formed in the walls.
"Ladies and gentlemen, if you would kindly lay down on the floor we can take care of this in a nice and orderly manner. Remember that all of this money is insured and you won't lose a dime, the government will pay for it. There is no reason to play hero. You will all be fine if you just cooperate."
People began to drop to the ground, covering their heads and necks with their hands. Three men advanced towards the counter with large sacks.
"Place the money in the sacks quickly please. As soon as you're done we'll be gone and you can go about business as normal. Remember, no need for anyone to be a hero."
The tellers began to fill the sacks with money from their tills. One of the men moved behind the counter to the vault. It was sealed shut. He placed his hands on the vault door. The tremors started again. Cracks appeared in the wall surrounding the vault. The metal frame inside of it began to warp and twist from the vibrations. The vault door fell inwards as the metal buckled and gave way. A deafing boom echoed as the steel door hit the floor.
The tremors continued, being felt for blocks away. They began to fade after a few minutes.
Inside the bank the tellers were still filling the bags, praying that they lived through this. The man at the vault was busy stuffing bags full of cash from inside the vault.

Lei was immediately on edge as she felt the tremors hit, strong enough to rattle the plates in Blackheart's cabinets and the glasses on the tables. A child of California, she was immediately concerned. "An Earthquake? Here?" she asked, her shadows pressing outward unconciously to prevent breakables from falling off shelves.

"There are no fault lines until you get to Moodus, Conneticut." Gravitas said, his senses attuned to the shifts in the ground. "I would wager it's inside Millenium, and artificial. Unless Tesla's old water massage treatment is back in service, that's the cue for a few of us."

Ryan had been just nursing his beer for awhile, getting a feel for his team. When he felt the tremor. His first thought was earthquake, but almost as soon as he thought that, he knew it was wrong. His second thought was explosion. That started setting off flags in his mind.
"Could be trouble." He stood up and started towards the door, intending to go to his car, which had a standard police/government radio setup, to see what was going on.
