#1 Was David Xanatos (Gargoyles) Evil?

Post by Comrade Tortoise »

Well, this came up in conversation with everyone's favorite ice-mage today.

Was David Xanatos an evil person? Or was he merely misunderstood?

This is going to depend on which season we discuss. Season one has him lying to the gargolyes and committing crimes, it shows him using everyone who comes into contact with him for one reason, the betterment of David Xantos' interests. If he isn't evil in season one he's certainly trying to be.

Season two has him tormenting the gargolyes for fun, mutating human beings into inhuman forms for his own self interest and generally behaving like a dick. Yes in season two Xantos was a evil little rich boy.

On the flip side it also has him risking his own life to save Fox, who he actually loves. And then he changes after the birth of his child.

In season three, Xantos is at least trying to reform his ways and make up for the things he's done to others. I don't think you could call him evil in season 3.

He's always walked the line. His lust for immortality has caused him to do some downright evil things if it served his purposes, but he did, at the very least, act in an intelligent fashion. Unlike other villians, he wasn't Stupid Evil. You never heard him say at the end of an episode "I WILL HAVE MY REVENGE!"

However, he certainly wasn't the worst villian in the show. That, I think, belongs to Demona. Xanatos, I don't think, ever wilfully killed people. He caused pain, discomfort, and physical deformations, to be sure, but he did have a line that he didn't cross unless he absolutely had to. Demona, on the other hand, gleefully killed humans throughout the show.

Demona was fucking genocidal. Let's be honest. Course we have to point the fact that Xantos knew Demona was as loopy as a box of fruit loops and homocidal to boot and still worked with her several times.

True, but those collaberations were his way of gaining access to magic, since he couldn't use Owen/Puck for that. He thought he could keep her under control, when clearly she had her own plans. However, he did keep his contact limited, and after the night of stone fiasco, I do believe he limited his connections with Demona.

I don't think Xanatos really knew how bad Demona was until after the night of stone incident. Smart as he was, he did make some mistakes.
