As for Faerun, the things about the 3rd edition that really appealed to me was the return of Bane, the end of the Retreat, and the Dwarven population rebound.
I love how the end of the Retreat is being handled in the Novels. It's the end of the Retreat because they're coming back.

I love breaking Tolkein cliches.

Horizon Chantry, under one of the various Masters there, pre-Reckoning and Horizon War (so 2nd edition MtA).

The Realm itself is a veritable wonderland, and while being dangerous, between the two main settlements and the Consor guards, it's pretty safe.

If I had to choose between UU and Hogwarts, I'l goto Hogwarts, they have a actual cirriculum and teach you useful spells.

He taught them, didn't he. And with far more proficiency than Lockhart, Quirrel or that bloody Ghost of a History Teacher. Being the villain doesn't automatically exclude you from being the best out of a school of really bad teachers. It made sense that he had to teach at the school; and you wouldn't do your cover-job badly, would you? In fact; doing it well was a vast and amazing advantage... it gained Harry's trust.

UU for me. Some of the Hogwarts stuff is good, but spells like the Seismic Reorganizer and the Incendiary Surprise are probably dark magic for them. You never know when you might get the urge to do some drastic landscaping.

And they get staves instead of sissy wands. Six feet of enchanted oak is a better weapon of last resort than twelve inches of alder.
"If we had a military division with the bullet-carrying capacity of these birds it would face any army in the world. They could face machine guns with the invulnerability of tanks. They are like Zulus...." --Major Meredith on the "Emu War"

That's like dinosaurs!
