With nothing to do for a bit, Alex went out onto the roof of the building and exposed himself to the sun. He opened his arms to it's warm healing light.

As soon as its yellow rays touched his flesh, the wounds began to heal. The flesh and skin knitted together as fast as any seamstress was capable of sewing. The dried blood scabs fell off like old corn husks from an empty table in the wind of an autumn day.

The sensation of it was almost orgasmic. It was what first lead him to think that maybe reptiles feel a pleasure response to basking which rewards them for maintaining a certain temperature. He was right * and soon, he would have to hand in a letter of resignation to tue university and inform them of his new posting. It wouldnt do to just leave.

Still, he didnt want to think of that at the moment. His only concern now was his one conciet. A love of warmth.

"For me? It's a good thing. But I was abandoned as a baby at some hospital doors and bounced from foster home to foster home until I was fourteen. The Fed is the only thing that's wanted to hold on me and not out of love. Look, I'm not here to give you the hard or the soft sell. I'm here to give you whatever help you need to make the right choices for you. For me it works. I make good money, I have a good health plan, good benefits, and I get to do some good."

"I don't even know where my powers came from. I heard they ask you that. Plus I got family. I don't want my real name splashed everywhere, who knows what sick freak will do then? Fuck, I'm still in school too. Be kinda hard to study and go jumping around everywhere on Fed business. I don't want to break the law either. But..." Blast shrugged. His life seemed determined to go stranger and stranger since that damn crash, why the fuck couldn't that drunk just fucking stayed home that night?

"Here's how it goes. You join up and your name gets buried. Deep. Federal Crime to reveal it. They do ask you about where your powers came from, in fact they'll try to do every test they can think of when they have time, but honestly half the people don't know. Hell, they don't even know how I developed mine. They know where they come from, but not why I have it."

"I don't know about your studies. Honestly, the Fed will do what they can to try to allow you to pursue them, but if you're going to be jumping around saving people even on your own that's going to do some damage to any future studies.

"As for your folks they're entitled to health care and survivor benefits. I won't bullshit you. Wearing the mask is fucking dangerous, but at least you have access to the best metaphysicians in the world if you work for the Fed and your family is taken care of if something does happen. Not an issue for me, of course."

Blast seemed to chew over the information for a minute and took a long drink. Yeah... Not what he had planned. Not what he had planned for his life at all. Could have been worse, he could have died. Mom could use the money and hell with it, he would be doing this shit anyways. He touched the old black painted armor... Dad would understand... Better than anyone maybe, expect Blackheart here. Aw Fuck...

"Alright, I suppose I could night school or something... How bad it is? The orders and shit I mean. How bad are we talking here?"

"It can be bad. No bullshit. In the field its not a problem, but out of it there can be a fair amount of bullshit. The top is a little of leary of metas and while they gives us perks, they have us on a tight chain. But its not really something to worry about." He drained the last of the Coke.

"Field work can be really bad. Some of these assholes need to be put down no matter what the cost and the cost can be fucking high. You won't get much bullshit in the field but you'll see and do some unpleasant things. Things that stay with you. You're already into that though. You killed a man yesterday, a man who was probably warped into a monster by Freakshow. And Freakshow is still out there."

Blast nodded. He had killed. He hadn't meant to. He hadn't wanted to, but he had done it. He nodded again.

"You might has well tell me where to report to then..." He paused a another problem digging it's way out of the back of his skull. He hadn't been able to do that properly since his first fight, you could hardly just walk in and tell this kinda shit after all...

"Do you guys have a Chaplin or something?" He asked.

Adam awoke that morning with a yawn and stretch. One of the fringe benefits of being a vampire was the ability to sleep quite little, and get quite a lot of rest from it. He smiled as he caught a slight glance of the newspaper on the floor just inside the door, however. There'd been more metas there last night than he'd thought, apparently, but they'd managed to scrape a victory out of it.

But the leader had got away. Adam didn't have to read the article to know that, the leader had gotten away from him, despite his own best efforts at the time. The freaks reminded him of those mutilated cultists that he'd encountered back in 1923, a monster-worshipping cult that sacrificed or mutilated people in order to be closer to their masters. But these ones were actually metas, not just mutilated humans that worshipped one.

The vampire grimaced, this wasn't over yet. And he needed another drink.

Blast took a deep breath and took Blackheart's hand and stood up. No backing out now.

"Cool." He said.

Blackheart rose up, taking Blast with him. "I sure as hell did. That's part of how I broke a whole bunch of ribs and when they x-rayed me they found the super tumour." He turned slowly in the air. "Headquarters is that way." And he shot through the air, taking Blast with him.

Questions raced through Blast's head, Super Tumour?!? But he didn't voice any of them, he concenrated on holding on for dear life and getting a good view.

"Don't worry, I won't drop you. Super strength. I've done this before. Used to be Brainblaster's chauffer/bodyguard when we worked on the same team."

Blackheart carried Blast through the air, swooping around buildings and then rising up towards the roof of one in particular. He deposited Blast down gently and then landed beside him. "Behold, solid ground or a reasonable facsimile."

He activated his earpiece. "Blast is joining up. The usual deal. He wants to speak with a chaplin first though." He clicked it off.

Blast felt better with something under his feet. Much better.

"Super Tumour? Aren't those... Kinda... Fatal?" He asked as he took his first steps forward.

"Yeah. Mine might be. It's not exactly a tumour, although that's what they though it was a first. Its looks a lot like black heart sitting in my chest and its connected to most of my major organs and my nervous system. As its connections grow stronger, so do I. Most of the scientists think its engineered to turn humans to metas and everything will be peachy keen. Not everyone is so optimistic."

"Fun. Must make your life interesting. Does it ever hurt?" Blast noted. Well at least he was relativity sure that his powers wouldn't kill him. Worst he felt was the tingle when he drew in his max amount. He wondered at that point if that was a fixed amount or if it would grow with time and use, like a muscle.

"No, except during biopsies. Fuck those hurt, but that's mostly a side effect of needing a drill not a needle. I heal faster because of it, it dampens pain when I'm badly fucked up, it keeps the organs running or does there job when they're damaged, and it makes me go only partly crazy when doped with psychotropic drugs. Of course, it has plenty of good reasons to keep its host alive if its not as fluffy as the docs hope it is. Until it decides to hatch or whatever."

He opened the roof door and held it for blast.. "And even if it isn't nasty, I still can't stand to watch even the good movies in the Alien series anymore."

"What'll you have?" the hotel's barkeep asked gruffly.

Adam sighed, collapsing into the barstool with exhaustion, "A pint of Guinness, please."

"Coming right up," the barkeep said.

The vampire glanced up at the news report on the nearby television, something about a kidnapped politician. Senator Sherman, someone advocating for 'harsher meta-crime punishments'. It didn't directly affect Adam, seeing as the sum of his crimes took place in small English and Scottish hamlets which didn't even exist anymore.

Of course, they didnt notice the half naked man basking in the sun on that same rooftop. It was, afterall, not a place one expected to see sunbathers. As both of them went through the door he lay there, contemplating his fate.

A loud crash jerked her from sleep. Camie had fallen asleep at the resteraunt a good hour before. She looked around, disoriented for a moment before realizing where she was and what had happened. She yawned and sighed. A few people were looking at her funny. "If you didn't like the look of me sleeping, why didn't you wake me up?" She shot. They quickly looked away. I must look like shit.

She motioned at Frank who walked over to her. "What now?" He looked grumpier than normal.

"I was just gonna pay you geeze, lighten up." She said with only half the usual sarcasim.

"No need it's been taken care of."

She raised an eyebrow, "Do what? I told you I had money this time..."

Frank shrugged and poured her a fresh cup of coffee, "I dunno," Cam took a drink of coffee. "Marie said some guy driving an old van said he knew you and paid for it." Then she choked. Fuuuuuuuuk.

================

After she had finished her coffee, she set out. She had left her clothes and nap sack ay Bry's house. She hoped that he'd left for work by now and she could just break in and get it. The best part of the old district was no alarms (not that that was a problem for someone who could teleport and become invisible but a good thing none the less). She reached his building and climbed up the fire exit stairs. She clicked her tongue, the metal stud clacking against her teeth. The mother she'd created in her mind the past year yelled at her to "Stop doing that, you're going to break your teeth." She half laughed half sighed and stopped. Then making sure no one could see her she flash 'ported to just the other side of the window, quickly turned invisible, got her things, plus a few of Bry's ex's things (hey he did say she could have them), and walked out the front door and down the steps. She smiled at the control she had just performed, as she turned visible while walking around a corner. Maybe she was getting better, than again, it always seemed to go ok, when she wasn't thinking about how she could fuck it up. She was glad she didn't have to work that day, that would have been bad. She stopped at a gas station, changed her clothes, bought a drink and a sandwich for later and began walking to the park. She needed a place to stay now, that was going to be the hard part...

Mark ate by himself in the wee morning hours. He was probably going to be needing to take a power nap soon, despite having passed out a few times in the last 24 hours. Those were for different reasons. A few other agents looked at the odd silver covered creature that ate in their cafeteria, only Mark's mouth was exposed to allow for food, everything else was covered. He didn't like the idea of taking on a job for the government, but they'd cover him for this mission, the pay would be good, and it was for a good cause, then it would be back on the road. Mark briefly wondered who else they'd gotten for the job, hopefully none of the fuckups that had been at the binary. The croc, Saibot, and that other guy... the shadow kid, those were likely. Great, that shadow kid and the croc. Both were newbloods. Mark finished the last of the ham, downed his drink and got up. The least he could do would be to apologize to that one kid for shooting at him, the kid should have known better, but that hadn't been a reason to fire on a friendly.

As Mark made his way around the building, he slipped into a nap and Legacies took over, he scouted out the area, listened in on conversations, and that's when he heard the name of the Meta that had done that to him, Freakshow. He'd have to be found and put down permanently.
