#1 Laptop buying advice

Post by Destructionator XV »

My friend is currently in the market for a new laptop, and is wondering what would be a good buy.

She is not a big gamer, but wants to be able to listen to music, watch DVDs, play some games still, things like that.

Can anyone reccommend any good laptop brands to buy? Good components? Good screen? Good battery life? She also wants one which is pink, know if that is possible?

I'm afraid my own knowledge is much better when it comes to desktops, so even obvious hints here might help me when it comes to lappys.

Pink, huh?
Well, that rules out my usual recommendation.
Not knowing what the american market has to offer I can only advise to not buy generic brand. Good luck finding spare parts for that one three years down the line.
Here in Germany I'd probably go Toshiba or HP. Of course I doubt those come in pink, either.
Performance wise frankly I doubt you'll find a laptop that isn't up to those demands unless we're talking graphics-intensive games for which a laptop isn't exactly prime choice anyway.

Well, I have a compaq laptop. I don't recommend their desktops at all, they're the most worthless pieces of crap on the market, but their laptops aren't bad.

And plus, there are a few sites out there where you can get vinyl 'skins' to put on your laptop to change the appearance so that might be an option for her need for pink. Or you can go the route I did/still am doing. Get it, sand it down, primer it, and repaint it yourself.

If she can spring for something nice, she can go to Voodoopc.com and get pink laptops there, its also very nice preformance.

You SHOULD have a minimum specs list of a 1.7GHZ Pentium M(not 4, not Turion), and a non IG card, non IG lets you use your RAM there.

Interesting. That I didn't know.

Won't that give the dealer/manufacturer an excuse to declare the warranty void?

Girls. Don't try to understand; your brain will explode. Just buy them what they want.

Actually no, they can't void your warrenty for repainting your laptop as long as in the process of repainting your laptop you don't damage the functional parts of it. That'd be akin to them voiding it for getting a superficial scratch on the paint. The laptop is yours. As long as you are not altering the functional portion of the laptop(I.E fucking with the monitor or internals) they won't void your warrenty.

So either she has to shell out for the pink one, or she can go the easy way and get a regular one then paint it pink.

Hmm.

Any bets on whether she gets Dest to do it for her?

Thank you. I stand corrected then.
It's just that these days, the terms 'USA' and 'rational' leave alone 'consumer-friendly' don't seem to go all that well together.

Well my advice honestly is to call your warrenty company prior to taking any action and verify this but I asked Compaq and they said as long as I didn't damage the system so it would be nonfunctional that I could do it.
