Still in hyperspace, Admiral Krane plays an old human game called "SafeHold" which, unbecknownst to him, was once called "Sorry" with his with his bridge crew

"HAH!" all my blue pieces have reached the safe hold, I WIN! Said Admiral Krane. There really was only so much to do during longer transit times, and they still had five standard days to go

One mind.. What had always been one mind, as long as any could remember.. split, spun, coalsced into two. Two vast hive minds confronted one another. At the edges, they frayed; those who were unsure. But two realms of thought were forming in the Vell-Os, and they stared each other down.

Billions will die! But the predictions were wrong; other predictions can be wrong! We owe them action, we owe them defense!

This is as we have always done. It is our proper place to observe and bear our burden of guilt.

The debate raged, spanning the entire Empire. It was entirely in realtime; Vell-os Telepathy was the basis on which FTL comm technology had evolved. But the debate didn't find resolution. Neither could shove the other side's core.

The edges frayed, strengthened, tore, and regrew. But both sides knew the only way to resolve this was by action, actions that would tilt the fates of billions of men, women, and children.

The younger mind lunged.

T-4

Impossibly sleek and graceful, living works of art, Darts swam out of Hyperspace. Their entry was 'quieter' than most jump drives, but that only leant to their otherworldly, impossible features. The squadron formed up, each ship rippling with the power of the Homo Psionus inside as they dove towards the two fleets preparing for battle.

The Tomoari occasionally employed Vell-Os craft in augmenting their own fleets, particularly against tough foes. They would likely not realize what was coming, and that would be the main way this tiny grouping would do damage.

We cleanse ourselves of our stains. Be it by deed, or our spilling of blood. The thought echoed through the squadron.

Tomari Space - Rim
Morchea Province
Apocalypse class Battle Barge Ragnarok

Tulsa +6 days

Fleet Rank Hallstrom watched the death of the remaining elements of the Tomari fleet. Deprived of system defences, their escort screen shredded, and their capitals fled they were easy prey for the powerful Narsen ships. The battle had killed another one of his Vigilance class cruisers and wrecked another Fury, as well as severely damaging several other ships. Damage control would salvage what it could.

"Have the Talon class from Second Fleet join First Fleet," he ordered. "The remaining elements of Second Fleet will pursue the Tomari capitals through hyper, return to normal space ahead of them, drag them back into normal space and finish them."

"Pick up all the escape pods and confine any Tomari for interrogation." Psi ops were knew to the Narsen, but telepaths were part of military intelligence and other forms of assisted interrogation were very well developed. "Deploy boarding machines to clean out the crippled Tomari ships," he continued. "We'll salvage what we can from them and our own wounded. Signal dirtside to evacuate their orbital facilities and prepare bombardment firing solutions for the battlebarges targetting all shipyards and factories in orbit."

It hadn't gone as smoothly as he had wished, but this was war. The Tomari fleet was still easily defeated and the planet stripped of much of its us as a staging point and fleet support resources without incuring heavy civilian casualties. If this worked right every governor would be screaming for mobile units to defend his world, pinning part of the fleet down and effectively neutralizing it.

Now there was the matter of making sure every governor feared them. They had struck against an important world. Perhaps something a more out of the way and of lesser importance would help fuel the fear of the Narsen. Every world from highest to lowest needed to be screaming for resources and more importantly, know that the Tomari were not only evil but incapable of preventing Narsen attacks. The most dangerous thing for an empire built on strength and fear was the perception of weakness.

Hallstrom hoped psy ops was right about that because the Tomari had a hell of a lot of ships.

Just Outside Laminu Space
KIN Carrier Mara Dien
TI +6

Fleet Duken Gran stepped out of the elevator and onto the bridge. They'd arrived just outside known sensor range of the Laminu sector four hours ago. A small group of Scout Escorts had been sent out to examine the layout of Laminu. They were running slower so they could put up the their cloak well enough to hide the fact that they were military ships, but they were running hot and it was doubtful any of those Escorts would be up for the fight ahead. It would take another day before the fleet got encrypted messages from the group. It would explain what it was that was waiting for them at Laminu, and with a little luck the escorts could stay there and give them hourly updates.

Meanwhile the fleet was doing drills and preparing for their first fight against the Tomari in millenia. Orders were straight forward, and for anyone but a Kainan they may have been suicidal, they were to take and hold Laminu if it surrendered. If it did not, then wipe it clean of the capability to resist ever again and leave. A fighter squadron flew by being chased by another squadron of fighters. The Tomari were strong, but the Kainan were stronger, and they would be proving it soon.

After the game board was cleaned up, and he recieved another order from command. He was to change course and enter deep into Jaen sector, combat actiosn above Tulsa had begun again and they would soon be jumoing out for their counter-attack.

He ordered the change of course, and stopped for a moment. This was going to be an unbelievably boring trip. He got on the intercomm and ordered several of the recon ships, essentially modified bombers which served as quickships top launch ahead and scout out Jaen sector. The reports might releive some of the monumental boredom.

The plan was simple, but brutal. The Tomari fleets would enter unstable low orbits above the planet. As the ships were disabled, collision courses would be plotted. The troops on the planet were ordered to make final pushes into the tunnels, blasting a few new areas in the confusion. The collision courses were designed to hit the areas offering the strongest resistance. The second time around would be easier, even if Fenrick and his fleets weren’t there to see it through.
"Sir, they're moving into low orbit." came the report. Glowing icons moved on the plot as the Tomari fleets fled into the chains of Tusla's gravity well. It was strange, their agility would be compromised by the friction of the astmosphere and the greater gravity. Niether would it afford them greater protection from UP targeting computers. Indeed to really hurt the UP fleets they would have to advance out of the planet's.

"I see. Advance into missle range." Came the order.

United Protectorates Void
Oklahoma Sector
Tulsa System

T-4 days

The great fleet slid into position in optimal missle range, outside of fighter or direct fire range of the Tomari. The missle pods were rolled. Every ship carried several of the 9 missle, 1 shot drone pods, with the whole of the UPVN disgorging their pod cargo, there were literally thousands of them floating in the void.

Admiral Tzu stood up from his command chair. With the Tomari withdrawing into the atmosphere instead of attempting to flee from the system as had been their best projection, the old plan was ashes. So be it, plans were often the first casuality of any battle. Tzu had formulated a new plan and it had been accepted, he had the advantage of being faster on his feet than the other admirals. As it was his plan, Admiral Anderson had allowed him to give the firing order as soon has all ships had updated their fire plan and target selection accordingly. Encrypted com signals flew back and forth amoung the ships at speed, signaling their readiness to fire according to the new plan of battle. It normally would not take this long, but the size of the combined UPVN worked against it, as well has the importence of the Alpha strike landing a good blow.

The final report came in. It was time. Admiral Tzu stepped back to his chair sat down and activated his restraits with an air of finality.

"To the fleets. Fire." He ordered. The Void around the UPVN seem to explode as missles launched forth from ships and pods, thousands of missles streaked down onto their targets. The Fighter Carriers of the Tomari fleet.

The squadron of Darts hurtled through space, gobbling up the distance between themselves and the planet. They swam and spun through the missile swarm, evading as only precognitive beings could. They needed to be close.. Suicidally close.. To execute their plan.

A Dart wasn't a major ship. It spanned somewhere between patrol boat, quickship, and fighter. It would be a poor combatant in a straight up fight; their power in the Tomari Empire had always been augmenting the battleships with their great knowledge, and exploiting holes in the enemies mental defenses.

Now the Tomari were exposed to the same dangers, as the gestalted mind reached out telepathically through the void, attacking the Empire's own sensors and communications.

Tulsa - Orbit
Jaen Invasion Fleet
TI +4

"Sir, the fleets are in position. There are reports of atmospheric interferance on some of the closer ships. Troops are making final pushes into the tunnels."

"Good." The best in the fleet's electronic warfare and point defense crew had been ordered to man stations, with other crew on standby. Damage control teams stood ready to keep the ships fighting for as long as possible. This would be bloody. The troops still on the planet would take fire from orbit, through missed shots and falling debris. The ships in orbit would not make it home to the Jaen province. Still, those Vell-Os ships in the distance would make the battle that much bloodier for the Rimmers. Fenrick even considered for a moment making a break for the edge of interdictor range, using the planet's gravity to swing around to the far side. It could work, but in the end, it would simply give the Rimmers more time to make use of their missiles. Even with the faint Vell-Os signatures in the distance, defeat was certain.

The first missile salvo ignited thousands of points of light on the sensors of the Tomari ships. Electronic Warfare crews started targeting ECM at the missiles, decoys were launched, al standard procedure. Suddenly clusters of missiles began to fade from the sensor arrays. Fenrick glared at the screens.

"Were they destroyed?"

"Negative sir, PasLight still detects acceleration burn from lost signals."

Fenrick clenched his fist tightly. If passive optical sensors were still picking up the signatures, then the thermal band should still be operational.

"Multiple new signals!"

"PasLight confirmation?"

"Negative, PasLight is now registering massive interference. Attempting to compensate."

The Rimmer electronic warfare was considerable, and the interference the current Rimmer fleet was throwing out was already being compensated for as best they could. Were there new ships in the Rimmer fleet, or...

"Ensign! Track the source of the new interference!" Fenrick felt a moment of weightlessness.

"Sir, the interferance is coming from outside the Rimmer fleet, best information indicates increased emissions from the other ships that jumped in."

"By the whores of the First Emperor." Fenrick whispered. Across the fleet, shields flared up as nuclear blasts filled the skies above Tulsa.

***

On the ground, Colonel Therius watched the orbital battle through one of the drones on the surface. The denser-than-air gas was running low, they were flushing what remained of their reserves to drive the defenders deeper into the tunnels. The remaining Tomari forces were starting to dig in and set up fortified positions. It was going to be a long time before reinforcements could be sent, and his men had to hold as long as they could.

It was on the 3rd salvo that the smaller carriers began to break apart. Their shields failed and their armor just unable to stand up to the ravening megatons of nuclear flame tearing at the near naked ships. The fleet carriers shields were beginning to fail.

Admiral Tzu watched this with interest on his tactical plot. It was then that he saw the shields fail on one of the big capital class carriers of the Tomari.

"Message to 3rd and 5th battlegroups concenrate fire on that target, blow it to pieces!" He barked. More missles leapt out of the tubes screaming at down at the Tomari fleet. The Tomari fleets were outlined starkly, heat blazed from them in the confines of the astmosphere, making them hard to miss. If one could watch the battle visually the Tomari fleet would be glowing and seeming covered in explosions. However their point defense wasn't crewed by idiots...

Each salvo contained thousands of missles being launched by over 400 ships, hundreds slammed into the enemy who seemed to have trouble shooting back. Admiral Tzu looked down into his plot hiding a bloodthristy grin, the Tomari couldn't die fast enough for him.

PFC's Toras' breath seem to rattle hollowly under his mask, he gripped his rifle in gloved hands. The gas was fucking annoying. The advancing Tomari troops more so. General Lee had decided it was time to advance right back however.

"All units... Go." Came the call over radio. Toras spun around the corner, opening up with his rifle and moving forward, his unit rolled over a shocked squad of Tomari troops, taking another turn right into a platoon of Tomari Shocktroops. He opened up at point blank range, as did his fellows and the enemy. The six or so survivors stumbled back stumbled back seeking reinforcments...
