Dorian jumped and yelped a little.

"Sorry," he said after a moment of staring stupidly, "I get jumpy this late--outta coffee again..." he sighed. "Friend'a yours?"

Gwendolyn nodded.

"Alright. And keep your ass on that bed, punk," the doctor said with a playful wink. The girl waved him off with a laugh.

"Better," she said, addressing the ghoul.

"I was?" she thought for a moment, then said: "Sorry, memory's not too gr--" the word was broken off by a series of hacking coughs, and when she got them under control she continued:

"Yeah. I was just wanting to make sure you came back okay."

She shrugged. "Doc says one of my kidneys is trashed. Might have to re-open me and take it out before it causes trouble." Despite the casual manner of her speech, she appeared more than a little worried.

"Plus a grand total of five or six of my ribs are busted. Never gonna look flawless in a bikini again, that's for sure."

She chuckled a bit, then sighed.

"Yeah... I suppose you're right there," she admitted. After glancing over Reaper's shoulder to ascertain that Dorian wasn't peeping about, she struggled into a sitting position and rested against the headboard.

"It's lonely in here," she said with a grumpy pout.

"Ouch," she said with a smirk, putting a hand over her heart as she rolled her eyes.

"At least you'll come talk to me." She skirted her gaze across the infirmary. "Being in here... 'S not exactly encouraging."

She sighed, frustrated, and attempted to sit up straighter.

"I just can't stand... Sitting here. I want to help."

"Remember?" the girl asked. She took a sip of the water at her bedside, then pointed to the chair Dorian had been sitting in. After all, she felt rather dwarfed down in the bed regardless of whether or not people were looming over her.

There is only the new. Old lives are over. All is changed. What will you be now? That is all they care about." He swept his hand to indicate the mall. "Your past is better remembered than mine, but only a little more relevant. Be what you wish to be."

She thought for a long moment about what he said.

Just make a new name for herself. Forget about her father, about her guilt, about the fact that she came to the mall half-dead.

"That's..." She pondered the words. "That's the best advice anyone ever gave me."

As she looked up to him, she coiled a stray strand of hair about her finger.

"So... What's this 'ghoul' stuff, anyway?" she asked. "I'm not... I mean, I just... Don't get it."
