"Guards can die," he said. "But when bad people come here, I kill 'em. Dunno how, but when the Smilin' Man's people came here to try an' hurt Miss Sherry, alls I had to do was look at 'em an' they went crazy. Back in America, my mama said my family's got a gift. Guess it's more useful now than ever."

"It'd be more useful if I knew how to do it," the boy said with a quiet laugh. "But at least dad knows now. Before, he thought I killed a boy on purpose... Miss Melanie convinced him not to 'cause she trusted me," he said with obvious pride.

Silver nodded, Petro was quiet, Melanie could tend to him.

"I checked m'self out, Mike gave me the ok to leave....I'll.......be around."

Silver kicked himself off the wall as best he could, gingerly almost, compred to his normal movements. He shuffled out of the room, leaving the husband and wife to grieve.

'Don't grieve to hard old friend....' he thought. When he was far enough from thier rooms, he let the cough he'd been holding back free. His hand covered his mouth, and when it came away, the blood was there.

"We all gotta die sometime...." he said again, to himself, as he made his way towards the stores of winter clothing. He would have to get a set of winter clothes...

He straightened himself out, and made his way to the supply room.

"Don't push yourself too hard," Melanie said to Silver as he left. The man looked like death warmed over, to be honest, but if Mike had given him the go-ahead, then Melanie wasn't going to override that despite her worry.

She sank down beside Petro in the chair and wrapped her arms around him, but she couldn't think of anything to say.

Silver left the stockpiles after a few minutes, dressed out in new BDU pants, boots and a flannel shirt.

He moved slowly, headed back for the Infirmary. It took him far longer than it should have, and on his way he passed by Sherry and Mike's place.

Mike was asleep like he deserved to be after running the infirmary while the First were out, and Sherry had been restless, unable to sleep due to the combat high.

As she left their room, she saw Silver and smiled brightly.

"Hey, you," she said with a wave, "glad to see you're up and about!"

He stopped mid-stride as Sherry called out to him. He was hoping not to run into her. But he put on his "social" face, which really much different from his warface, aside from a slight smile. Though the smile had a sad quality to it.

"Hey kiddo, how's tricks?"

She smiled and trotted up to him. Her cheek was scraped up fairly badly from falling through the floor and her arms were raked with cuts, but it was all superficial. And of course, her dear doctor had taken care of patching her up.

However, she looked as though she was fighting back something, as well.

"Holding up," she said. "The First are mine now."

He nodded, "Good...you deserve them.." he said gently, leaning against the wall.

"The mission was a success from what I gathered....congratulations."

"Yeah," she said, "we got it. We're safe for now."

She sighed a bit.

"I just hope it's what Steve would've wanted," she said softly, her brows knitting together in worry. She leaned against the wall beside Silver and stared at the floor.

"Steve was a trooper, like the rest of us. He wanted for everyone to be safe, for us to beat them. We did it....wherever he's at now....yeah..he's happy now....and in a far better place than us..."

He coughed again, his hand covering his mouth, blood frothing on his lips, but his hand whipped it away. Almost all of it, blood still speckled on his lips.

He patted her shoulder gently, "You did it kiddo...the First did it. Now it's time to celebrate...enjoy the all of you have free...."

His words sounded so final, as he began to shuffle off towards the armory, where his weapons were held.

After mulling over Steve's words for a moment, Sherry smiled wanly.

"Yeah," she said with a nod. "I hope he is."

She watched Silver as he started off.

"Where're you headed?" she asked.

"Getting my gear... Time for me to check out Kiddo." he said with that touch of sadness.

He kept on shuffling on, time was awasting. If he was going down, he didn't want it in here, with all these people. If he died, he'd turn, and there could be a hell of alot of problems before he got taken down.

He stopped, shuddering for a moment with the pain. Slowly, he turned looking over his shoulder at her, "Yeah kiddo?"

She looked up to him--one of the few people who was taller than she at the whole mall.

"Isn't there another way?" she asked, looking distraught. "Mel and Dorian and Ace and Mike... They can do something... We have antibiotics now..."

He shrugged, "I'm not infected....I'm bleeding Kid....different story. No antibiotics gonna cure that.."

Silver turned towards her shrugging.

"Petro and Melanie think mike gave me the ok to go, Dorian saw me leave, Mike is asleep...don't think any of them know it."

The girl bit her lip and sighed.

"There has to be something we can do!" she said. "It aint right to just let you go off like that..."

She took a deep breath.

Silver was a grown man; he could make his own decisions. She'd hated him when they'd first met, but they'd grown close.

Her eyes met his.

"Is this really what you want?"

"Mourn not the dead, celebrate the life they lived, the times in which they lived. Let them not be forgotten."

He turned completely towards them, placing a hand on her shoulder. "There's other ways, sure. Always another way kiddo. But the Doc's gotta take care of the injured from the mission, I took up enough bedspace. Petro has to deal with Steve's death..."

"That doesn't mean you have to go," she said, wiping her nose and sniffling a bit. "We've lost enough, Silver," she said.

Sherry squared her shoulders and resigned herself.

"If you wanna go, go," she said quietly.

With a long sigh, she wrapped her arms around his shoulders and held him close.

"Then I won't stop you."
