They tramped through the building behind Reaper's entirely unsubtle lead.

There was a sudden thump on the floor, then the floorboards began flipping upward as grasping hands and talons reached for them. Petro jumped aside, firing downward as one of the Irregular screamed and was pulled below.

Sherry lunged for the boy that was being pulled down, gripping his forearm and bracing herself against the floor.

They shouldn't have managed this much stealth. Only the smarter ones could manage not to make a lot of noise. So all of them below were high end. He snarled as he drew he axe. Several blows and he had a decent sized whole in the floor.

He dropped the axe and drew his shotgun. He had an angle on one. He shot it twice and it went down. He emptied the gun into another and it collapsed.

The boy that Sherry had grabbed screamed once more as talons shredded his torso. Petro bounced past, stuck the gun against his forehead and fired, then lashed out with his hatchet, chopping off an arm. Zombies were surging up from the holes in the floor.

Bad situation. Close combat and outnumbered. Petro whirled, backpedaling until his back thumped into Sherry's, then raised his pistol and hatchet, howling defiance at the mini-horde.

A zombie reached for Wendigo, trying to pull him down. The ghoul pulled him up and buried a knife in his brain and twisted. The body spasmed and went still. Wendigo reached down through the hole and another one grabbed him.

He dragged this one up. It raked him with its claws. Wendigo punched it in the face and then thrust his knife through its neck and ripped the blade through flesh. He dropped the twitching torso and reached for another. A term went through his mind. Ice fishing.

Sherry didn't have time to mourn.

She lashed out blindly, screaming at the hands that reached out to her. It was only a matter of time before the floor gave--

And she was pulled through with a yelp, the decaying floorboards collapsing around her.

He felt her drop away suddenly and didn't hesitate, turning and jumping into the hole.

If they went, they'd go together. Only fitting, since he walked them into this disaster.

He hit the ground and fell heavily to the side, a zombie stomping his torso and bending down for him. He buried his hatchet in its forehead with a snarl.

None would come into reach. He seized his axe and dropped down the hole. There was a struggling throng ahead. Good. If they were alive by the time he got there, they could cover his back. He began to hack his way forward.

She pressed her back to Petro's, fending the imposing claws and teeth off as best she could. Superficial cuts began to overlap upon her arms as she swung the axe like a madwoman.

And she remembered something.

"Petro!" she screamed, "Duck!"

One of the firework bombs the Guard had rigged. Marley had been explaining it to her, but she hadn't paid much attention...

She looked, saw Reaper headed toward them, lit the bundle, threw the package in the opposite direction, and threw Petro to the ground, huddling against him all in the same second.

Sherry piled on top of him as the bomb detonated, knocking the zombie corpse off of him. To their left, the damned thing started to pull itself up again, his hatchet still imbedded in its forehead.

Wendigo grabbed the corpse and threw it done. He stomped on its neck, which broke like a brittle branch. "Hit harder," he ordered.

She felt something dig into her back and grunted a bit, but it wasn't bad. The second after the bomb went off, she was hopping up and offering Petro a hand.

"Come on!" she shouted, yanking his axe from the shambler's head and handing it over.

"I'm up," he said, looking around. A couple of other Irregulars had jumped down with them. He glanced at Reaper. "Warmer down below. Let's move."

He took a two-handed grip on the hatchet. 'Hit harder'. Go fuck yourself, he thought sourly.

Wendigo reached down and tore a long strip off a zombie torso and began to chew it as if it was licorice. He amiably walked forward.

He fell in behind Reaper. The last smart one had kept a bodyguard of sorts of older, faster ones. They were likely to be close, very close. At least now they were on bedrock friggin' concrete. Nothing was going to drag them down here.

Sherry reloaded her pistols, firing strategic headshots back into the crowd where she could get them.

"Come on, bastards," she growled to herself, "where are you hiding?'

They came to a large room, apparently a meeting room. A pile of corpses lay in the corner, torn and shredded, apparently quiescent.

The leader sensed the slaughter of the others as the humans continued on, he felt the pain of thier demises with each axe blow. But the humans didn't concern him, no, he was more concerned with the one moving ahead of them, the one which was eating his horde.

"Gragh, barharb gangbang"

The zombies, his personal bodyguard, spread out, to lure the others.

He would deal with the odd one himself.

Reaper cocked his head. These ones were too smart. The leader could get them too be silent and lay traps. He ripped off another strip as he thought. Another ambush was the logical next move. "Move back," he said.

One of the zombies appeared in the door at the end of the hall, the silver colored orbs seemingly feral, before it melted back, no sound except for a slow, hissing "harmanzzzzz"
