"Yeah fuck you!" Carter screamed back at the horror in front of him. He kicked at Reaper, not even realizing his leg was broken, then screamed as he slammed the fracture into the zombie.

"Fuck? What fuck?" Wendigo shook the injured man like a leaf. The shambler, missing its forarm, pulled itself out of the rubble. With his right hand Wendigo slammed the blunt end of his axe into the zombie's kneecap, shattering it. The shambler fell. Wendigo clubbed it in the back of the head. He turned back to Carter. "You. . . hurt . . me!"

The pain was intense, but the situation had a comedic tinge to it. Carter erupted in a burst of hysterical, pained laughter.

She watched them go, told Dorian to call her if anything came up. As much as she knew she needed to help on the militia end of things, she remembered what Silver said. Now would be an excellent time to gather all civilians who couldn't be put to use and ensure they were on the track to safety.

Jogging down to the mall's second floor, she then remembered she had other business to attend to first.

The import shop was dark, but she could see Jared curled in her bed nonetheless, and sat beside him, putting a hand on his forehead. Since the horde had been moving closer, he'd developed a fever, he said because the static was so loud. The absence of human thoughts, she figured it must be.

"I'm here now," she whispered, stroking his hair. "I'm going to make sure nothing hurts you, okay?" she said, kissing the top of his head.

He sniffled a bit.

"I want my dog," he said in a quiet, wounded voice.

"I know, darling, I know," she said.

The zombie piled into Reaper from behind, striking with lightning speed. One of the leaders, having already arisen from his injuries. Quick, powerfully, and possessed of murderous feral intelligence, it had known at once that this one was not part of the horde, indeed it could smell the flaws of Reaper, almost more like man than zombie. Savage talons struck as they went down together.

Reaper dropped the feeble thing that smelled so good. His improvised armour of loops of chains and his flak jacket gave him a little protection from the leader. He twisted under the other. It was fast, like him, and strong too. "I NOT DIE!" he shouted.

Muscle was was slashed and Reaper had yet to heal completely. He wasn't at full strength. He didn't have to be. He grabbed a knife off of his weapon harness, stabbed his enemy in the left shoulder and twisted. "You die!" he snarled at his hated enemy.

Carter screamed as he hit the ground. Rolling, he grabbed a chunk of debris and slammed it into the nearest available knee. Rock slammed into the kneecap of the zombie, shattering it. It stumbled back as Reaper pushed it harder, tumbling over him and hitting the ground, hissing at both of them with feral rage.

Left arm severely damaged. Now for right. He smashed his blade into the leader's right shoulder and twisted. The leader hissed. He left the knife there and drew a hook. "See this? Understand this? This is the end! You die. By my hand. By Wendigo Reaper's hand." He jammed the hook through what remained of the leader's nasal cavaty, punching through bone, and into its brain. He twisted, smiling as he destroyed his hated enemy. "I win."

Carter held the rock in his head, looking at the zombie. "Dude, you are seriously fucked up," he commented. He hefted it in his hand, shaking his head. "Let's get this over with."

"Weakling with rock? Against me with hook?" He drew his blade from the dead leader. "And knife? You are . . . . . seriously fucked up."

He shook his head. "Thank you Captain Fucking Obvious. Trade you the rock for the knife." He held it up offeringly.

This was entirely fucking surreal. He wasn't even scared anymore. The situation was flat-out entirely too insane. Sure, the monster was probably going to kill him, but first it had to comment on the state of affairs.

Wendigo Reaper's brow furled. "Why?" It didn't make sense. Why would he . . . trade rock for knife. Rocks were common. Rocks were everywhere. Good knives hard to find. He stood up. He had been hurt bad enough that he wasn't healing very fast now. "Not want rock. Can get rock. Want guns. Ammo. Fresh meat. Vengeance. End to pain."

Carter's mind raced along at high speed, a small flare of hope blossoming. "Listen," he said very carefully. "You help us, we can help you. Food, ammo, revenge, you want it, we can help you."

"Hey hey hey," he said placatingly, tossing the rock away. "We were hurting them," he jabbed his finger at the shambling remnants of the horde, the orgy of self destruction winding down as none were left standing. "Didn't mean to hurt you, big guy. Not the plan, not the plan."

That was until he crawled over a rather large pile of debris, and saw one of his men, on the ground, with some armed nut standing over him with a hook and a knife...

Wendigo turned, putting away knife and hook. The heavily armed and armoured being was hairless and covered in tough, leathery hide. Its flesh was marked with scars, tears, and gashes. Claws tipped its fingertips, but intelligence lived in its eyes. It appraised him. "You friend?" he said pointing at Carter. "You leader?"
