There's a tally of some sort on the opening page, but it doesn't elaborate on the effects or history of the affliction. What did I miss?

It makes your text grey and inserts 'cough' into your chat and suchlike. It spreads.. I'm not sure how. Probably by k-mail and chat.
There's two ways to deal with it. One is getting the medicine man to whip you up a cure(Which'll make you better until you catch it again), or visit Goofball man for some rose-tinted glasses. Which don't cure you but let you think you're cured.
