Cynical Cat wrote:"Rationalizing your actions does not change them," she replied. "I suggest you meditate and search your feelings before speaking with Master Brianna."
"what do they teach Padawan these days?" Asarak thought to himself before he replied
"When one rationalizes, they do so to avoid responsibility for a failure. They do not trade one failure for another of potentially greater magnitude. I will of course take your recommendation. One should always meditate and search one's thoughts before meeting with a Master. This one is new however. Did any of the council survive the war?"

The Jedi entered the Temple and crossed a long hall lined with waterfalls on either side. "You are continuing to attempt to rationalize your actions," said the Padawan. "You are avoiding responsibility for your arrogance by suggesting that you are entitled to do so. I suggest that you come to terms with your failure and your sense of entitlement before you speak with Master Brianna. It is at great personal cost that she has accepted her position."
The Padawan pointed. "Compose yourself. She is through those double doors when you are ready."

This one bears the mark of one who hears, but does not listen or comprehend. I do hope she does not represent what the order has become, or remains His thoughts were guarded now. He needed to clear his mind. He closed his eyes, and proceeded to do so. However, rather than doing what many learned to do, use ones amigdyla to shove thoughts out of their conscious minds and not deal with them; he used his higher brain functions to understand his thoughts and emotions, and through understanding, set negative thoughts aside.
In other words, he counciled himself the way his master used to. Through constructive dialogue.
How do you feel
Pensive
Why do you feel pensive?
Because I do not know what Master Brianna will be like. Has she gone headlong into old policies and dogma like this Padawan who met me, or has she learned from past lessons? The fact that I do not know the answer is disquieting
Would knowing the answer make you feel less pensive?
Maybe. The answer has more than academic significance
How so?
I could be expelled from the order, the order itself could fall victim to another cascade of Dark-Side conversions. The negative outcomes are many and varied.
Would knowing the answer change it? Barring quantum phenomenon, which are not germain to the topic.
No.
Then why feel pensive. Regardless of the outcome, you will be able to cope with it, the Force's will shall be done, in due time. There is no reason to fret, or worry. The order itself is a transitory thing, and if it falls, then its teachings were incorrect and someone, someday will learn from past mistakes and form something new and better.
It was all his own mind talking, but it was calming. His mind was clear, and he was ready to enter.
He pushed the doors open, and entered.

The doors opened to reveal a tall, circular chamber with floor to ceiling windows. Comfortable chairs lined the walls. There was a woman inside.
She was tall and athletic, with short white hair and brilliant blue eyes. She was young, thirty at the most and a well preserved thirty at that, and wore a robe that was as white as her hair.
"Welcome back to the Jedi Order Asarak," she said. "These years have undoubtedly been a hardship, as they have for all those who have returned to us. Are you well?"

Asarak paused. He might as well be honest, thought tactfully so.
"I am as well as I can be. The order is not the same as it was, and I am curious as to whether it is better, worse, or the same. I am also somewhat apprehensive. My master thought differently than many in the order, as do I to some extent. Which, depending on the answer to the first question, could have some rather serious impact not only on my training, but the order itself, and the course that the order will take in influencing the Republic, and the Galaxy as a whole. The moment has rather massive consequences for the future, and the possibilities are infinite. Oh, and I had to suppress the urge to kiss the docking platform when I got here"

"The order has been driven into hiding and many of its senior members killed," said Brianna. "Many of those, including myself, who are rebuilding it were not members of the old order. Nothing emerges unchanged from such conditions."

"Then you see my dilemma. However there is no use fretting over something that only time will tell." The Hortek took a deep, cleansing breath.
"I regret to report that my companion Melek, the Sithling I turned during the war, was cut down by bounty hunters. He would have made a good addition to the order were his life not cut short, pardon the expression. However, the experience of the attack has revealed two interesting things. One of them potentially useful, another dangerous. The useful one was a Rhodian sith, either stupid enough or too weak to be able to fend off the same bounty hunters who slew Melek. He was hunted by his own, and from our brief conversation before blaster bolts began to fly, seemed to be of a different philosophical bent. Less harmful. It may be worth investigating if there are more of them. The dangerous thing is something I felt on Mandragal. A presence in the Force that could only belong to what I would describe as a home-grown Dark Side adept. If those are common, we could run into problems with resurgent Sith pretenders"

"There are many who follow the ways of the Force that are neither Jedi nor Sith," said Brianna. "Those who succumb to their passions, follow the roads of anger, hatred, and ambition will fall to the Dark Side as they always have. And we will hunt them as we always have. The loses our order have endured hindered our ability to police the Republic and neutralize such Dark Siders before they do real damage. Do not confuse them with Sith and do not, for a moment, believe that the Sith are harmless. You were fooled Padawan and if you were less arrogant, you would recognize that already."

Asarak raised one of his eyebrow ridges quizically. Did she really think he needed to be told this?
"There is something you should know about me. I do not know what of the old records have survived the war, but in the old order, I was known for my..." he paused, as if searching through his vocabulary for just the right word, then he seemed to pluck it out of the air.
"candor and unorthodox approach."
He left silent though easily enough known through their mutual connection to The Force his opinion on how a teacher should learn as much from their students as the students from their teachers, and how a student who does not voice an opinion or offer counter argument in times of safe instruction did both a disservice. Blind defference never did anyone any good outside of a combat zone or armed camp. Of course then he grasped what she meant.
"The man I spoke to was,I believe, a Sith Heretic, a man trained as a Sith, but who had a philosophical disagreement with his fellows, and was hunted because of it. Our conversations were brief, so I cannot be certain of this. But I said useful, and less harmful because those such as him could be used to weaken the sith order. I felt emotional conflict brought upon by his philosophy. If this philosophy could be determined, imitated and spread amongst those already recruited by the Sith, it would make them easier to turn, or to strike down. Alternatively it could be a complete waste of time, an impossible task not worth our time and effort. I will leave that decision up to you."

"No," said Brianna. "The records and this conversation indicate you're prone to hubris. You know little and have accomplished less. You presume that your native intelligence means you know more than much more experienced Jedi. And you clearly have little to no understanding of the Sith and even less about the Dark Side. Naivety and hubris are an extremely dangerous combination."

"As interesting as this is, good Jedi," Trys broke in at that point. "There was a matter of payment for his transport." Personally, she happened to agree with Master Brianna. Jedi Asarak thought himself a little too smart for his own good. To see him arguing openly with his better in front of non-Jedi was just another symptom of this.

"Of course," said the Jedi Master smoothly. "That is being handled by the office of the senator for the Corellian Sector. I believe you have contacts there?"

"Indeed," Trys answered smoothly, hearing the unsaid message of dismissal. She gave the Master Jedi a bow of respect, and then turned away, fully expecting to find a Padawan, if not the same Padawan, standing there to make sure she was escorted out of the Jedi Temple.
After retaking a building, the last thing Trys would want would be a lost starship captain wandering the halls. Ship crews tend to get ansty and start blowing things up if their captain goes missing.

"There is that too. I must confess to having been given short shrift in that respect by the last five years. Being one's own master leads to the epitome of intellectual incest. You forget your faults, as you no longer have an objective eye point them out to you"

"It means you are still a person. Become too detached and you stop being rooted in the world, and become disconnected from the sentient condition, at least that is what my master taught me. Though she meant that we should be attached to abstractions, concepts; such as the general love of life. But I do not think this is the sort of attachment you speak of. I will press no further"

She looked at him. "You do not understand attachment," she said. "The proper balance can be difficult to achieve, but most half trained Padawans have wisdom enough to not to lecture Jedi Masters about it."

"A tendency toward oft unintentional demagoguery was an asset with Melek until yesterday Master. It is something that will also need to be checked, and thoroughly. I apologize for the presumption. That was an old lesson, and perhaps either I am misremembering particulars, or it was part of a series of lessons left incomplete by my masters death. I may also have missed the point. It happened sometimes. I cannot be certain. However Attachment is something that I will come to understand in time. I hope. Which does bring up the question: What is the will of the order regarding a certain half-trained Hortek?"

"For now, find yourself a room, make yourself comfortable, and attend classes," said Brianna. "With understanding of where your talents lie will come understanding of how you can best serve the Jedi Order and the people of the galaxy in this time of need."

"Then with your permission Master, I will take my leave. I will be in classes soon, as just being here makes me comfortable enough..." said the Hortek. Brianna nodded, and he turned, and left the chamber. He needed to remember where the infirmary was. He did so, then traveled there, taking the lifts down the necessary number of levels, and arrived in a large hospital ward suitable for taking in a lot more people than it ever did when he was here, and possibly ever would again. He went to intake, the medical-protocol droid looked surprised to see anyone.
"Oh! Goodness gracious. What is it you need Master Jedi"
"I am no master, but I was injured in a fight and need these cuts, abraisons and burns patched up"
"Well, if you would head down that hallway to the right the medical droid will be with you immediately"
"Thank you"
"Your welcome sir!"
...
Asarak got into an open room, his wounds completely healed in the medical ward. He changed into a nice new set of robes, his first set in ages, and sat slowly and luxuriously in a chair. A comfortable chair and sat at a computer console and looked at the schedule of classes. Selecting the ones he wanted, he put his name on the roster. He selected a course in lightsaber combat, another in force techniques, and another, an extended course in Jedi Philosophy. He then proceeded to do something he had not done in a while. He slept for an hour. After which he felt fairly well rested and the first saber class he could make was in a few minutes, so he got up and started for the class.

Brianna walked through the training room. Padawans and younger students respectfully bowed and stepped out of her way. "Riv," she said. "I wish to speak with you."
