#1 Inspiring or poignant lines from movies

Post by Stofsk »

Here's one from 'Fight Club' (I think):
'Man, I see in fight club the strongest and smartest men who've ever lived. I see all this potential, and I see squandering. God damn it, an entire generation pumping gas, waiting tables; slaves with white collars. Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don't need. We're the middle children of history, man. No purpose or place. We have no Great War. No Great Depression. Our Great War's a spiritual war... our Great Depression is our lives. We've all been raised on television to believe that one day we'd all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars. But we won't. And we're slowly learning that fact. And we're very, very pissed off.'

I'm not sure whether these lines are inspiring, but IMO they're poignant.

So be it. If saying "NO" means being alone, then to hell with love, with romance, with marriage, and all the shit life keeps pumping at me. I'll walk alone, but with freedom and a healed pride.

Mystery Men, for what it is worth as a film is a C class, but it has a TON of one liners that leave me floored.

"Okay, listen up! We've got a blind date with Destiny - and it looks like she's ordered the lobster."

"I don't need a compass to know which way the wind shines."

"You must be like wolf pack, not six-pack."

"Don't mess with the volcano my man, 'cause I will go Pompeii on your... butt."

"Looks like tonight the lone wolf rides... alone."

"The Blue Raja: Am I to understand that you have inserted your father's skull in that ball for bowling?
The Bowler: No, the guy at the pro shop did it. "

"Mr. Furious: I'm a Pantera's box you do not wanna open.
Casanova Frankenstein: It is "Pandora."
Mr. Furious: Please don't correct me, it sickens me."

" I... am the Waffler. With my griddle of justice, I BASH the enemy in the head, or I burn them like so! I also have some truth syrup, which is low in fat. "

"The Shoveller: [after leaving the bar] The Shoveller is hammered!"

And many, many more...

Thought I'd throw this one in because it's the only scene in any movie that has ever made me cry.
Lester in American Beauty wrote:I had always heard your entire life flashes in front of your eyes the second before you die. First of all, that one second isn't a second at all, it stretches on forever, like an ocean of time... For me, it was lying on my back at Boy Scout camp, watching falling stars... And yellow leaves, from the maple trees, that lined my street... Or my grandmother's hands, and the way her skin seemed like paper... And the first time I saw my cousin Tony's brand new Firebird... And Janie... And Janie... And... Carolyn. I guess I could be pretty pissed off about what happened to me... but it's hard to stay mad, when there's so much beauty in the world. Sometimes I feel like I'm seeing it all at once, and it's too much, my heart fills up like a balloon that's about to burst... And then I remember to relax, and stop trying to hold on to it, and then it flows through me like rain and I can't feel anything but gratitude for every single moment of my stupid little life... You have no idea what I'm talking about, I'm sure. But don't worry... you will someday.

From Star Trek VI:

I've never trusted Klingons, and I never will. I can never forgive them for the death of my boy. It seems to me our mission to escort the Chancellor of the Klingon High Council to a peace summit is problematic at best. Spock says this could be an historic occasion, and I'd like to believe him. But how on Earth can history get past people like me?

Arrakis... Dune... Desert Planet.

Your time has come.

A storm is coming -- our storm... and when it comes it will shake the Universe.

Emperor... we come for you.

"Do you know what your sin is?"
"Me? I'm a fan of all seven. Right now, I'm favoring wrath."

I forget the exact wording, but that will change on the second, third, and fourth viewings. There's several more lines, but they'll have to wait.

Some good Star Wars lines/scenes come to mind:
Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith wrote: Palpatine: "Darth Plaguis was a Dark Lord of the Sith, so powerful and so wise, he could use the Force to influence the midiclorians to create...life."
Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith wrote: Obi Won: "You were the chosen one! It was said you would destroy the Sith, not join them! Bring balance to the Force...not leave it in darkness!
Anakin: "I HATE YOU!"
Obi Won: "You were my brother Anakin. I loved you."
Episode 6: Return of the Jedi wrote: Emperor Palpatine: "Your hate has made you powerful. Now...for fill your destiny, and take your father's place at my side!"
Luke Skywalker: "Never. I'll never turn to the Dark Side. You failed, your highness. I'm a Jedi, like my father before me."
Emperor Palpatine: "So be it...Jedi."

Odd. I haven't seen Serenity yet. Maybe it was in a trailer or something. :???:

Here's a few of my favourites, I couldn't find Gary Oldman's rant about what he wants, from Air Force One:

"My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the armies of the north, General of the Felix legions, loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next."

Gladiator is packed with them. Just the real hero and villain nauture of Maximus and Commodus makes it great viewing. The music really helps this along.

"Immortality! Take it! It's yours!" - Achilles, Troy.

"The hardest thing in this world is to live in it." - Buffy, The Gift.
"Your personal motto is a self serving piece of wankery spouted by a insane egomanic?" -Frigidmagi
