Where the Wolverine=wolf fallacy comes from?

I'm talking about Wolverine the X-Men.

In the Onslaught saga, Onslaught used his telephatic power to make Storm believe that she was a child, and making Wolverine believe he was a wolf pup. Also, in the Origin limited series, James Howlett (the child who later became Logan/Wolverine) ran away from home after killing Thomas Logan, and lived in the woods with wolves.

It seems certain Marvel writers associate Wolverine with wolf, which I don't understand. Why? Wolverine is not wolf: Wolverine is wolverine, a particular kind of weasel that is strong and fierce enough to take down a moose.

Judging from his costume, "whiskered" facemask and the likes, it is obvious that Wolverine was originally intended to looks like wolverine instead of wolf. So again, where does this wolf association come from?

The wolf assocation is a simple one KAN, there have been legends of men living with wolf packs in the wild since before the Romans. The founders of Rome were believed to have been raised by a she wolf for example. The Jungle Book tells us a story of a young man raised by a wolf pack.

Having Wolverine live with wolves echoes the myths and legends. Plus it is damn hard for something the size of man to hang out with wild Wolverines.

Wolverine was given his name by Canadains due to the that despite his short stature he is pretty fearless and aggressive.

Well there's that and the fact that originally Wolverine was going to be a wolverine. A mutated crossbreed human/wolverine...
