They are found throughout fantasy, the evil and depraved race of grunt soldiers serving in the army of the Dark Lord. From the Lord of the Rings' orcs to Jordan's Trollocs and everything in between.
My current favorite is the Sranc from the worlds of Earwa. One of the "Weapon Races" of the Inchoroi, created as souless weapons of genocide against Men and Nonmen. They are pale, hairless, come up to to short man's shoulder, and have beautiful faces. They reproduce rapidly, can survive for long periods of times on grubs and insects, and although weaker than men are fast and viscious. They derive sexual gratification in acts of violence, killing and raping indiscriminately.

It's not that I'm unforgiving, it's that most of the people who wrong me are unrepentant assholes.

I think the funniest group of cannon fodder I have ever seen has to be from El Hazard, the bugrum. In my campaigns I prefer gnolls, hobgolins and Lizardmen as standard monsterous cannon fodder.
As to the books I'm undecided.

Jinnai and the Bugrom! Oh I love that series.
IMHO Slayers trumps them though, (especially in the first season) with Generic Fantasy Monster Hordes and OverZealous Bountyhunters.
29th today... FIREBALLLLL.
*giggle*
As for when I run custom there ain't nothing like a nest 'o kobolds with some sort of intelligent leader directing their traploving selves.
