#1 Favored Genre

Post by JEAP »

Do you have a favorite genre? Do epic works of high fantasy dominate your bookshelf or do you perfer the hack and blast of a good sword and sorcery novel? Maybe you perfer the cyberpunk of Neuromancer or Bladerunner? Or how about the epic tapestry that a good space opera weaves?

For me, steampunk is a craving I have trouble satisfying. All that outlandishly retro-advance technology... There is just something about the style of it that captivates me.
"If we had a military division with the bullet-carrying capacity of these birds it would face any army in the world. They could face machine guns with the invulnerability of tanks. They are like Zulus...." --Major Meredith on the "Emu War"

That's like dinosaurs!

i like fantasy with the whole girl has magic, boy has sword, both get in trouble, dragon saves the day...

you know the usual.

for high examples of my preffered style i suggest

Blue Moon Rising
Royal Chaos
Dragon Companion
Minerva Wakes

and "Chicks In Chainmail"

i also recommend for light reading

The Sword in the Stone
Something Wicked This Way Comes
Botchan
The Little Prince
Peter Pan

and all three of Bruce Covilles Magic Shop Books

I tend to like grittier work, whether sci-fi or fantasy. David Drake, Steven Erickson, R. Scott. Bakker, George R. R. Martin, etcetera.
It's not that I'm unforgiving, it's that most of the people who wrong me are unrepentant assholes.

I prefer very medieval, gritty, and 'realistic' high fantasy. Lords and nobles in battered plate armor, peasant armies pressed into service, with the occasional mage or dragon here and there.

I also like high-magic stuff like Forgotten Realms and other D&D-grade stuff.

And, of course, Planescape, which is practically a genre of its own. :P

JRR Tolkein-style fantasy, the high-magic style of Forgotten Realms, steampunk and the like, parody fantasy (Discworld springs to mind), sword and sorcery hack-and-slash does also have a place on my bookshelf.

And who doesn't love a good space-opera:
