Quick question. Could modern small arms fire harm a Troll from Lord of the Rings? I'm told that for a melee weapon to work it has to be enchanted?

What we know of Trolls is that they're ridiculously tough and turn to stone in daylight. It could be that the enchantment was needed to harm something that's literally stone; so many firearms would merely irritate it, while heavier ones would punch through. Alternately, it may be a regeneration matter. I'm voting with the density though, and say you'd need stuff that can reliably plow through granite.

The hide of Olog-hai was tougher than that of most trolls. It required extraordinary weapons to penentrate. So, it would probably depend on the gun and the troll in question.

Probably; IIRC, Boromir's sword harmed the troll in Moria?

Frodo stabbed a cave troll in the foot in Moria.

But wasn't Frodo's weapon Sting at the time?

Yes, it was.

Boromir's sword didn't harm the troll; it bounced as though it'd hit a stone, vibrating somethin' fierce. Must've been one hell of a stinger. Speaking of which, Sting *did* damage the troll-- went into its foot, and the black blood flowed.
While I'd imagine melee weapons need to be wielded by an exceptionally strong warrior or be enchanted, it's rather the no-limits fallacy to presume that a Troll would be immune to anything but enchanted melee weapons. I'd imagine that a .50 BMG could dent one pretty well; so could an AT-4 as well.

Yes, while their stony nature would protect them, sufficiently powerful weapons would still harm the troll. Of course, I'm fairly certain that there are no modern smallarms with the punch needed to reliably harm trolls...
