Assuming he has a direct interest in it. He may well look at the whole thing and go "That... might be a bit too big for me." and proceed to stack the deck for someone else to win that will be favorable for him.

He won't want Xykon to get the gate and Elan and company are his best bet to upset that. He might try to intercept Xykon but I doubt it (to direct and heroic). Odds are he has a trace on the carpet and will follow to ensure Roy and Elan are just successful enough that he has a clear field of play when it's over.

Or he may figure that the best way to prevent Xykon from getting the Gate is to get it himself. Nale knows everything the order knows, so Tarquin will now know that there's a real risk of universal destruction, and he might not want to risk that, and the Order has already failed to prevent the destruction of two gates.

He has all the necessary manpower to gain control of the gate: Malack for the divine magic and possibly one of his unnamed companions for the arcane magic, unless he's going to use Nale for that. Besides, he's a villain. What villain would pass up a chance like that?

EDIT: on second thought, Nale was pretty confident that he could control the gate, but obviously that's nonsense - they need a ritual to do so, so Tarquin may have to jump through some more hoops. :???:

Now that's interesting. He didn't kill his wife and Nale didn't either.

And it looks like Tarquin is going to try to eat an energy field bigger than his head... Ah well.

Huh... Malack seems unlikely... A rebel group? The Draketooths? This is gonna come up later.

oh come on Tarquin.....you were so deliciously intelligent and crafty for a bad guy......

Don't try to eat the energy field. It won't end well

I'm betting the Draketooths. After all, she was telling everyone about them, when they have been keeping low for a long time.

Usually it's good news when they put the band back together.

Not this time.

I foresee Malock stabbing Nale in the back at some point.

Yup, this has trouble written all over it. Not good for group dynamics when the going gets tough.

I wonder how likely it is for Tarquin to obey an order from Nale if he disagrees with it. Unless he's better at manipulation than he's shown so far.

Tarquin's actually shown himself to be pretty damn good at manipulation. This is the most capable and dangerous incarnation of the Linear Guild . . . . as well as the one most likely to fall apart due to infighting. Fun times ahead.

Oh yes, he has! But usually people are aware that they're having their buttons pushed, except for the really stupid ones, like the Empress of Blood. Also, Nale knows Tarquin.

Still, you're right, he's going to have what it takes to be the one who's really in charge. He knows Nale too after all, and he's a lot smarter. At least he's counting on it - that's why he joined.

PS: Neither of them know about the IFCC, though. They were kind of relying on the Linear Guild being chumps for them, now they've got someone smart on the team.

The Bad Guys are back! It was about time we saw something from the main villains again. Especially now that we've had Tarquin's intentions laid out and the previous chapter brought to a close. It looks like they're going to be arriving in the Western Lands soon, too, just in time for the big meet-up.

It will be interesting to see how the dynamic between Redcloak, Tsukiko and Xykon has evolved over these past few weeks, and whether she's managed to usurp the #2 spot like she wanted (with Xykon being mad at him and all, and her trying to figure out a certain ritual).

It's the resistance in with a last minute save! Can they break through the Team Evil brutal backfield lineup?

Well, that answers that: 826.

So much for the Southern Front.

I guess this was not just about Team Evil getting back in the game, but showing how Azure City wasn't going to be free in the near future after all.

Thus falls a hero. :(

Also, I guess the moral of the story is that it doesn't pay to be an evil minion. And that the bad guy won't always fall for taunts and place himself in danger.

I do love the not an idiot Redcloak. And am kind of enjoying seeing what he's trying to build here in former Azure City.
