#1 G.I. Joe movie update

Post by frigidmagi »

Joblo

[quote]When the G.I. JOE movie was announced a couple of months ago, it was reported that the team would be changed to a multinational tactical organization (with the name now a "backronym" for Global Integrated Joint Operating Entity) and based in Belgium. This was a smack in the puss for fans of the cartoon and comic, who prefer that the team remain living under a car garage.

Don't worry, JOE maniacs -- Lady Jaye won't be eating fluffy waffles with Van Damme. Hasbro has turned the hose on that blazing rumor with an official announcement at their site: "The G.I. Joe team will not be based in Brussels. Instead, they will be based out of the “Pitâ€

Meh. Even the comicbook version of GI Joe is still cheesy --not to mention the cartoon. That's too bad because the comic series has way more serious tone than the cartoon, but the cheesiness is still there nonetheless. Besides, most GI characters are bland. In fact, the villains are way more interesting characters than the heroes.

You should look up the current Devil's Due Publishing comics of GI Joe there Kreshna, it's not as cheesy as the Marvel comics, or the cartoon, and they even killed Lady Jaye in it.

Well I haven't been following G.I. Joe for quite some time, but the Devil's Due Publishing sounds very promising. Now I hope they based the movie on that instead of the Marvel ones.

By the way, the Transformer movie is actually cheesy, but it is a movie about giant robots from space, so it has all the excuses to be cheesy. I hope the G.I. Joe movie won't follow that route. And if they make Cobra Commander a comic relief in the movie, then I'll commit personal jihad against anyone responsible for it.

I've honestly been chewing on the idea that the Commander would be more effective if he was kept off screen as a voice. That voice should not be anything like the cartoon voice.

Thoughts?

tough to say.....

Part of what made Cobra Commander such a standout in my eyes (from the 80's cartoon anyway...) was how threatening he could be with that hiss in his voice. Plus jus tthe way Chris Latta portrayed him (VA wise) struck him in my mind more than some of his stupid schemes.... not to mention how...well..intimidating he was at times.

Take for instance, the time when Destro walked into the Commander's chambers while he was eating. Destro blanched, while we see the Commander put his hood back on. Things like that you can't do with a voice offscreen. Admittedly, I doubt you'll see something like that in the movie anyway, if it's anything like the TF movie, Cobra will have a bit part in the end that'll only be seen in the final moments of the movie - while the rest focus on the joes, or civvies.....

The comics did a slightly better job making CC menancing. Even the Baroness was a dangerous character, not just Destro's love-interest and comic relief.

I'll go out on a limb and say that you have very little to fear that the voice of the new cobra commander will be anything like the original voice. The guy's dead. So unless we've developed working necromancy I'm not seeing him reprising his roll as Old Snake

That would be a bad idea. You should be showing Cobra from the get go.

Cobra should be absolutely terrifying from the get go and kick an almost limitless amount of ass on the US, Russians, and anyone else they take on until the final battle where the Joes pull off a victory against superior numbers and impossible odds. The Joes need a reason to exist (why not just send in Marines, Delta Force, etcetera) and the greatness of a hero is measured by the greatness of the evil he defeats.
