#1 Superheroes

Post by Stofsk »

This thread is for a general discussion on superheroes and what they should be like.

What do you like about superheroes, and what do you dislike about them? If you could be a superhero with powers, what would you do? What kind of powers would you want to wield?

As far as comics go, what would you say strikes you the most in terms of the most innovative? Yes, I know, Watchmen - let's look at other sources if we can.

Innovative? Dial H for Hero. DC did this awhile back. They let kids write in with super hero ideas and actually used them for the random superheroes the Hero Dial created...

As for what power I'd have? I think everyone in my Heroes game has established that I enjoy temporal manipulation WAAAAAY to much...

I like that superheros can do amazing things no one else can. I dislike that superheros are inconsistently portrayed with respect to their abilities (and in some cases have retarded powers). If I could be a superhero with powers I expect I would go to some place like Iraq or Afghanistan to help out our soldiers -- if my powers lent me to that kind of work -- or I might apply my superhuman abilities toward helping the 3rd world -- again, dependent on how my powers can be applied. Personally I would love powers of durability, endurance and strength. When I look at something tall I think about how awesome it would be to simply jump off it. When I go running I wish I could just sprint forever and enjoy the feeling of running as fast as possible for more than 20 seconds (choosing when and if to sleep would be awesome too). And I always want to be stronger than I am.

Comics... I am not familiar with comics, excepting what I have read about them.

Interestingly enough, Steve wrote "The Girl in the Metal Suit" after I complained about a lot of comic book superhero cliches. (While I'm here, I'll also mention GitMS 2 because I love those stories.)

I don't like really wanked out people with lots of angst so I got a nerdy amateur engineering whiz with the often unhealthy hobby of taking down and igniting bad guys. Who also didn't even get to pick her own superhero name, since I can't think of names worth crap and the media would invent one (the most horrible one possible) in my stead. Monologues for naming oneself are stupid, anyway.

That character doesn't have any superpowers, but if I was going to have one, it'd definitely be telekinesis. If I could get it strong enough to levitate myself and fly, even better. Even if I didn't, it'd mean that I could fetch toilet paper for myself those times when I sit down and realize that I'm out without having to get up. I seriously think that every time I have no toilet paper.

Storytime update 8/31: Frigidmagi might be amused by this one.

I think N Korea would be torn apart in short order.

I'd probably do either 1) nothing or 2) something to make a quick buck so I can do nothing from there on while not having to worry about bills.

I'm too lazy to save the world, and there would be complications anyway - such as interfering with police business, assault, destruction of property, and maybe even murder (perhaps accidental; with super powers, accidentally going too far, or getting angry and going too far in an instant, would be much easier). Just because one has super powers doesn't mean he is above the law.

But if I had powers I could use to make a few thousand dollars easily, I would, buy a house, then sit around all day doing nothing. Laziness is abundant here.

I would have telepathy (in which I include general mind-screwingness). Seriously, telepathy is incredibly powerful. Just think about how being able to manipulate the thoughts, emotions, and perceptions of others could be used.

Presumably those who are saying they'd do nothing except make money off their power are thinking of legitimate and ethical applications of their power, right? No looking into the future for the lotto numbers.

What if your power was superstrength and speed? What would you do? Become an athlete... and get disqualified because you're powered and everybody else isn't? (even with steroids they wouldn't be able to compete) What if the only application of your power is 'hit things fast, hit them hard'?

Would you become a mercenary? A bodyguard for the rich and famous?

On that note, it's also easily the most immoral power in existance, since you are removing all free will from the subject. Any time you coerce someone into doing something by controlling their mind, you are violating their basic sapient rights.

Go for that Reed Richards-style superintelligence. All other good things flow from there.

Well, true. Although I can't know how well I'd be able to resist misusing my power, I like to think that I'd restrain myself to these uses in everyday life:

Sensing the emotions of others
Sensing truth/lies
Enhancing my arguments with empathic "oomph" (not true mind control, just an additional means of persuasion)
Mind-to-mind communication - like a cell phone, only free and less obtrusive!

Things like direct mind control, the Jedi Mind Trick, altering the perceptions of others (i.e., making them not see/hear/smell/feel me), thought reading, and telepathic attacks would be reserved for moments of great necessity.

Do not give me superpowers, I will not be able to suppress my darker impulses.

Teleportation: Hey, I'll just step into this store and help myself to something.

Telekenisis: You bastard, cutting me off like that! GET OFF THE ROAD! (offending car flips to the side of the raod)

If I have these fantasies without having the power to back them up, God only knows what I'd do with them.

Yes. Give in to the Dark Side. You know it is your destiny.

No No you're doing it wrong, they could trace it back to you. Just squeese a blood vessel in their head and give them a stroke.
