#1 Havoc takes a little drive
So as some of you may know, I'm taking off on a little vacation. Just a small road trip, 4,000 miles or so, with the general objective of heading east until I run into an ocean, and then north until I run into Bostonians. I'll be bringing various items of technological bent with me, but by necessity, my network access will be somewhat limited in places like Monument Valley or the Ozarks. As such, I will check in at places when I am able to, such that you may all be assured that, despite your fervent prayers, I have not actually been murdered by Rutger Hauer or cannibal mutants from the hills.
Some of you I hope to see along the way. To those people, I'll just mention that I would indeed appreciate not being tased, though of course customs in far off and strange parts of the country vary somewhat. I'll be periodically checking in on this site as well as my Email and text messages, so feel free to drop a line should it be convenient.

Gaze upon my works, ye mighty, and despair...

Oh sweet merciful Jesus. Are you sure that you can survive away from California? Just remember, staying away from the lower part of Virginia means you miss me by a good gap.

If you drive north to Sacramento, let me know.

you all do realize I expect a portion of his anatomy from each of you as tribute?

You work on an oil rig, so you're in a better position than most to get spare parts. Don't US oil rigs have a 5x greater chance of killing workers than foreign rigs? ;)Dark Silver wrote:you all do realize I expect a portion of his anatomy from each of you as tribute?

As oil rigs by and large tend to be offshore, I very much assume not many of those were included as part of his road trip.

DS was looking for spare parts - I just told him that he doesn't need to look very far for them.Batman wrote:As oil rigs by and large tend to be offshore, I very much assume not many of those were included as part of his road trip.

What about shipping, and keeping them in useful condition? The oil rig is bound to be set up for that-is Takeyourpick, Somewherealongtheroad going to be?

Greetings to all from scenic Bishop, California.
Frigid, I've calculated and pored over the maps, and I'm afraid that Phoenix is just not gonna be possible on this run. I can get as far south as Flagstaff, but any further and I simply can't make it work, given when I have to be in Durango. I'm real sorry man, but I just can't make Phoenix this time.
If it's any consolation, this is clearly the fault of DS.
The Sierras were amazing, no traffic and lots of snow. Not only that but Travis AFB was flying C-130s and what I swear were MiG-29s overhead as I went by. Mono lake and its surrounding mountains could make a credible Mordor.
Tomorrow, Death Valley in the morning, southern Nevada and the Hoover Dam in the afternoon. Target is Henderson if I'm feeling slow, Kingman if I'm being audacious.

My point exactly. The oil rig is bound to be equipped to keep harvested body parts viable. The towns Havoc travels through, from which said body parts would have to be shipped to said oil rig, not so much?rhoenix wrote:DS works on an oil rig, Bats.Batman wrote:What about shipping, and keeping them in useful condition? Greetings to all from Williams, Arizona.
Lots of states have deserts, but I would not mistake Arizona for anywhere else. Nevada was a complete pit, and yet Arizona, despite being no less desertlike was paradise by comparison. I'm not sure why. I think Arizona wears the desert better. It feels more like desert and less like wasteland. This trip has confirmed my theory that if one is not actually making a Las Vegas trip, then one should, at all costs, avoid Vegas like the plague.
Also, who builds a bridge overlooking the Hoover Dam and then sets up concrete barriers that prevent you from seeing it?
Death Valley was hot, go figure, but also possessed of the most complete silence I have ever experienced. Turn the car off and step outside, it was almost monastic. So profound it was like being deaf.
The canyon itself is tomorrow.

If it's any consolation, Frigid, right now I wish I had gone to Phoenix.
I'm in Kayenta, AZ right now, which is not a place I'd recommend. Not only did I get caught in a speed trap and ticketed for it, but since checking into my motel here, my rental car's keys have disappeared. I believe I locked them in the car (as there's only a couple of places they could physically be),ut it could potentially mean serious disaster if I can't find them.
I've got someone on the way to get me into the car physically, and we'll see what happens then.

Welcome to Arizona, land of long, flag, straight, unoccupied roads and the police that care intensely about speed limits on them. Because, yaknow, that makes oodles of sense.

Crisis averted. With the copious assistance of a man sent by AAA (whom I could kiss), the missing keys have been located. I will now begin the process of de-hyperventilating and getting the hell out of dodge.
Targets for today are Monument Valley, the Four Corners, Mesa Verde, and ultimately Durango.

Thank goodness that worked out. Now, hopefully, not only will you not do that ever again, but will also avoid those small town speed traps I warned you about. Some will actually throw you in jail until you pay, so be warned.

Greetings to all from Durango, CO.
A lovely town in a lovely part of the Rockies, a nice change of pace from deserts and more deserts.
Monument Valley was impressive, the Four Corners were not, but then they're an arbitrary hole in the dirt. Mesa Verde, which I've never even heard of before yesterday, was a gigantic mesa overlooking eight thousand feet above the entire southwestern corner of Colorado. It's also dotted with the ruins of Hopi-style adobe villages. Most awesome.
Tomorrow, I take a train to Silverton and back, and explore the Rockies a bit.

Greetings to all from Denver, Colorado.
Getting over the Rockies was... interesting. Some of the passes up there are eleven thousand feet above sea level, and the weather was in. I'm sure by the standards of the area it was nothing but a light dusting, but it was fairly intense by my standards.
Denver marks the end of leg one of this little drive. After a few days to recover, I'll be heading east along I-70 into Kansas. The route will either go via Missouri or via Tennessee, but in either case I will wind up in Kentucky prior to entering the Appalachians.
