Howdy everybody, the name's Jans. I go by that (or variations thereof) pretty much everywhere, but in this case I picked up the link to this board from SDN. So far it looks like a refreshing change from the Giants board.

I'm a big Shadowrun and Mage the Awakening fan, though the old standby is D&D 3.5 and I've been know to go for a game of L5R, Dresden, or D&D 4e on occasion. Been playing for more than ten years now, though I'm not quite sure how much more.

If I have a tendency to lurk I do apologize. Several IRL games, work, and the last year of a college degree tend to put a crimp on one's online presence. When I'm not gaming, working, or doing school stuff I play League of Legends and any RPG I can get my hands on. I can usually be found on Skype, does anyone run voice chat games?

So there you have it, the customary introductory post.

Welcome Jans, we're a bunch of irredeemable nerds and gamers here, so may you enjoy yourself here. Only most of the population here is crazy, don't worry.

Hi Jans. We do run a voice chat game on Skype and Screen Monkey on Mondays. Currently it's Dragon Age RPG from Green Ronin, run by our beloved and widely feared Hotfoot.
It's not that I'm unforgiving, it's that most of the people who wrong me are unrepentant assholes.

Ohohoho, you will try Ascendant scum.

In all seriousness I've never had the chance to play Ascension with an actual group. I've only been introduced to World of Darkness in the past two years and my reaction are mixed. I enjoy the new Vampire story and politics, but like Masquerade more. Changeling the Lost is vastly more in tune with WoD themes and a personal favorite (I like my faeries to be bastards), Dreaming doesn't hold up in comparison. Werewolf the Forsaken doesn't exist to me, Apocalypse all the way. Geist and Wraith compare oddly, I think that's why the changed the name (and Geist overall takes some brain tweaking to get a good fix on).

I like the system for New World far more than Old World. Its just less complicated, more focused on letting the players do what they want without getting confused as to how they do it. Feels like the conversion from 3rd to 4th in Shadowrun in that regard.

As for Mage... The two friends of mine who have played Ascension have similar but different opinions on it.

One said that Mages in Ascension felt more powerful, less restricting than Awakening, at least at first. He really likes the Technocracy and has been working on making a New World adaption for them. After playing Awakening for a while he admits that he likes the new game more than the old, with its focus on the Pentacle as a whole (separate from the Paths) rather than the individual Traditions. He also says that the power curve is deceptive, because Mages in Awakening tend to get a lot more varied powers a lot sooner, even if Ascension was better one this or that.

The other one's main beef with Ascension was the lack of clear antagonists for your PCs. He likes his games to have at least some measure of black and white to them, and Pentacle vs Seers provides a much better over-arching conflict than Traditions vs the Technocracies Conventions or the various (relatively) minor bads. Being a big Sith player, he also likes the Abyss... more than is probably healthy for the rest of us.

I like Awakening because its what I'm used to, and I don't really feel the need to go back and learn an Old World system without serious prompting or a good reason (Glares at WtF, really we should have all guessed this was going to be bad from the acronym). When M20 comes out will I be snatching my copy up and devouring all that lore converted to the new system?

Fuck yes.

As for who I am... Well, I usually expect dinner (at least) before a question like THAT! The nerve.

Then I'd argue your friends were short sighted and thus, wrong.

Mage the Ascension had quiet a few "bad" guys to concern yourself with - and while the war focused primarily upon the Technocracy vs the Traditions, neither side were the bad guys, they simply had a different view on how to sheppard humanity along the path of reality.

If you want bad guys, people that the Technocracy and Traditions would stop a fight in the middle of to team up against, look no further than the Nephandi, or the Marauders.

Both of these were reality warping threats that made Technocrats and Traditioners work together, and either would not have a issue saying was indeed, evil - more so with the Nephandi whose entire overall goal was to END REALITY ITSELF - be it by opening up to the Old Ones, to letting lesser demons run on the Earth, or offering it up to the Hydraic Wyrm or one of various minor vassals.

And Marauders? Mages who were so insane they could use vulgar magic out in the open, surronded by Sleepers, and YOU get the Reality Bitchslap for.

So yeah...your friends were wrong on that bit.

Now about the powers? Mage the Ascension mages are very versitile, depending on how imaginative the player is. There are things I can do as a low level mage that your Awakening folks would probably get your mind blown over....not to mention what a Master or Archmaster could do......if they can get around the consensus and the Paradox.

The Marauders and the Nephandi still exist in Awakening, though split up and recombined a bit into the Banishers, the Scelesti (Who are actually called Nefandi sometimes, and have the Marauders throw paradox onto other people power if your ST is mean) and the Mad (as well as a host of Left-Handed Legacies). I believe Friend B's objection was solely for the over-arching conflict of main group vs main group, not so much the individual encounters. Awakening works the same way with the Scelesti (and most of the LH Legacies) in that everyone will drop their shit to dog-pile onto them, but the Mad and the Banishers, not so much.

For versatility vs power Friend A's reasoning went like this. Comparatively, Ascension had some serious power behind it that Awakening can't match until Mastery levels. The Practice of Making, or Creation, is a good example. The Matter Mage's trick of pulling what he needs out of his empty pockets simply isn't possible till Mastery in Awakening, he'd have to have something to transmute. Versatility more refers to how much other stuff an Awakening Mage can do at low levels when he has access to other Arcana. Sympathy, triggered spells, timed spells, conditional spells, sensing the threads, things like that. Also that it was easier to access those other Arcana, mainly in that you start off with two Ruling per Path instead of one Tradition.

Though Friend A was less about all that then he was a story/political comparison, in which he likes Awakening more.

Again, having never had the chance to play Ascension I can't really speak to the intricacies of the magics myself. I like the system for nWoD more than oWoD, as well as there being less crossover problems for Mages and everyone else. With any luck the M20 book will have all the Ascension stuff updated for nWoD, instead of just adding all the erratas like some people thing is going to happen. Then the bridge will be crossed!

Then Friend A wasn't playing good Mage the Ascension if he didn't enough political intrigue. Hell, the Traditions lost one of their most powerful and longest existing Chantry BECAUSE of political intrigue inherent to the fact of being an Awakened being in the Traditions. Don't get me started on the politics in the Technocracy.

As for your talk of the powers......the thing you like so much is pretty much the first rank of any of the Nine Spheres.....I can pull off a triggered spell by combining the right spheres at the right ranks, even as a lower level mage, symapthetic magick...that's not exactly something new for a Ascension Mage......

Honestly....I see you saying "oh Awakening does this and this and this!" but Ascension did it first, did it with more flair.

The only thing Awakening did, was dumb down the game mechanics to bring it more in line with Vampire and Werewolf and a few of the other games. I know, I looked over the stuff when it first came out - and hated it. I also never really had any issues combining Mage with the other systems in the oWoD.....it wasn't as difficult as most people kept saying, you just had to be consistent within your own game world.

Well then, I guess I'll have to find an Ascension game one of these days and see for myself. You've addressed most of what I've heard and I can't really make an accurate argument second hand.

I dunno... I've got him pretty distracted from the probulator with this argument. One might call joining his game tempting fate for him to remember. I think I'll at least wait until he's over the rampant sabotage of his one working unit.
