Greetings from Wichita, Kansas.
Kansas is a very pretty state, frankly. I sort of see the appeal for why one would live out here.
Unfortunately, things are going to get a bit interesting after tonight. There's a massive storm system moving into the area I'm gonna be going through, with all the thunder, lightning, and tornado trimmings. I'd go around, but this particular storm system stretches from Texas to Minnesota, and is thus somewhat hard to avoid.
So er... yeah... we'll see what happens.

Enjoy the storms of Kansas, good sir. Take pictures if you can.

I remember driving through Kansas when my family drove to Colorado to visit my sister. I ended up driving through a superstorm. It was pretty awesome.

Greetings all from Fort Smith, Arkansas.
I can't say I want to live in Oklahoma or Kansas, but I see the appeal. I was expecting oil camps and windblown plains, particularly in Oklahoma. Instead I got a wetter version of the Central Valley crossed with Sonoma County. An extremely lush, verdant region, very different than what I expected to run into.
Thunderstorms all morning, cleared up in the afternoon. It's pretty much gonna be part-storms from here on to Washington, at least according to the weather service. So long as I don't run into a tornado, I don't mind the rain.
Gonna look into movies playing in town tonight.

I thank you for your kind words. I will note that if you come across Oklahoma in winter expect a much drier landscape, you're driving across during storm season you see and well, damn me if the sky isn't a sight during that time. I miss it.

Today, I was walking in Memphis.
I fell in love with this town the instant I stepped outside. Granted, the heat and humidity are enough to kill me, but that aside, it's a beautiful little city with lots of character. I spent the afternoon wandering up and down Beale street (the center of music in Memphis), wandering into Jazz and Blues clubs. I had dinner at a Cajun restaurant with live Jazz and Blues music complete with a blind harmonica player/lead singer, and had the waitress bring me her "suggestions", meaning I ate amazingly good food I cannot pronounce. Catfish and Crayfish and Etoufee of sausage.
It's nice to finally stop trying to outrun tornadoes. I got chased down the road by one two days ago, spent half of last night in a bathtub because of tornado warnings, and got up to watch a lightning strike fire at midnight only to actually see another tornado passing south of town. If I never see another Tornado, I will be a happy man.
Memphis made it all worthwhile though.

Tornados are rare in WV, due to the geography. Mountains break up the SuperCells, ya know :)
Even when they touch down, they do not last long. Some touch down and then retreat without moving. Those that have room to move rarely go more than a few hundred yards. In my lifetime, we've only had 4-5 "big" tornadoes, which really did no more damage than the strong windstorms we had in April. Roofs knocked off, trees toppled, etc. The worst damage I've seen from any tornado was the one that neatly clipped the treetops as it climbed a hillside. Took 10yrs for the trees to grow back.

Greetings all from Cave City, Kentucky.
My memories of Arkansas will be of trees. Massive, endless, verdant forests from which roads and towns have been carved, resembling Oregon more than anything else I've seen. My memories of Tennessee will be of rolling fields of lettuce and grain, and small towns studded with what appears to be one church for every three houses. My memories of Kentucky will be of MOTHERFUCKING TORNADOES.
Seriously, this tornado shit is getting old. I wove and dodged all over the western half of Kentucky today dodging funnel clouds and tornado reports. At one point I had three tornado/funnel clouds in sight in three different directions. I switched to a side road and drove away from them at ninety miles per hour. I was being passed. By semi trucks.
These motherfucking tornadoes have been chasing me since Kansas and I am sick of it. I've been through five towns already that got hit by tornadoes either as I was there or right after I left. Six separate tornado watches, three tornado alarms, radios that basically tell you "get off of the roads right now or you will die" when you're in a five mile stretch of open farmland WITHOUT TELLING YOU WHAT AREAS THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT. UGH.
If I have to drive to NOVA SCOTIA, I am leaving this goddamn storm system behind me somehow. How in the name of god do people LIVE with this stuff. I will never make a southern joke again. These people are clearly made of stronger stuff than I am.

You get use to it. I've lived near water most of my life. Tornadoes and hurricanes are second nature to me. "Oh, look, a hurricane. We got batteries and water? We're good."

See. This is why while you may make fun of Western New York, I smile and nod.
Because the worst we deal with is a lot of snow and a blizzard every decade or so. It is cold, it can be miserable. But the sky does not come down and actively try to kill us.

Greetings all from Charleston, WV.
I am here at the home of Tev and Nitram in lovely (and blessedly tornado-free) Charleston. With any luck, I will be able to recover from the weather's attempts to murder me horribly and finally see something other than thunderheads.

you do realize those storms were the Atmospheres way of telling you you shouldn't be driving cross country.

Greetings all from Washington DC!
Not the best hotel I've ever stayed in, frankly, but the town actually looked pretty nice coming in. I'm right in midtown, half a block from DuPont Circle. Gonna take it easy tonight and see the town tomorrow.
