Heroes: Shadows over Millenium

Legacies had been released from his encapsulation and when next Carol Zhan stepped into her patients room, she discovered that it was hanging from the ceiling. As the doctor entered, Legacies slowly came to the ground. "We feel fine."
Zhan smiled grimly, "And from what we can tell, you are fine. Your bones have completely mended, and the tests we've done show that you're in fighting condition again. I'm releasing you from medical custody Legacies."
The symbiote nodded in acknowledgment of this and then walked out of the room without looking back. The symbiote made his way quickly to an equipment room and grabbed a new communicator. Attaching it he set it to the standard frequency his team used.
"Blackheart, this is Legacies. We've been released from medical and are awaiting instructions."

What is a hero? Someone once said that heroes were those courageous, self-sacrificing people. The ones setting examples for all of us.
Everybody loves a hero. People line up for them. Cheer them. Scream their names. And years later, they'll tell how they stood in the rain for hours just to get a glimpse of the one who taught them to hold on
a second longer.
I personall think that's bullshit. Heroes, villians, it's all the same thing anymore. Just different sides of the line. The only difference it seems between the heroes of this world and the villians is that the heroes have the moral high ground and did the dividing of where that high ground ends..
Every time I turn on the TV it's another case of the exact same thing. Government 'heroes' fighting the war on meta-terror in our own back yard. And every time it's the populace that suffers for it. We all suffer for the retribution of the law against those who break it. We pay the ticket for the destruction that's caused. We mourn the dead, we pray for the survivors and we clean up and rebuild, only to do the same thing the next day.
It's almost to the point where you can tell where the line is. It's been blurred by the trampling of booted feet. Soon you won't know the difference at all. I already can't.
Politicans spout out the facts and figures, proudly showing the numbers that support their causes. The population of metahuman prisoners has dropped dramatically the last few years, they say. That obviously means less meta crime! Right? Wrong. Look closer and you'll see the truth the same way I do. Crime is up, but arrests are down. The number of metas brought to justice by the likes of Ultima and Primus are falling at an alarming rate. And yet how often to you ever hear from those villians again?
I use to wonder why. I also use to sleep safe in my bed at night, knowing that rough men stood ready in the night to visit violence on those who would do us harm. Now I barely sleep, fearful that those same rough men will turn to me next and set me oh so easily into their deadly sites.
But with that fear comes the burning hatred of them. All of them. Hero, villian, they've both given metas a bad name for far to long. How can they not see the results of their actions splashed across every newspaper, and their death tolls scrolling by on the nightly news. The cries of the homo sapiens rise higher and I see the torch being lit on the horizon. The protests will turn violent. I wonder sometimes, half-jokingly, if this is how the Jews felt in Germany before they were hunted down. Did they smell their own death on the wind, or feel the hatred and scorn of the populace on their backs?
That is why I do what I do. It is my plan, however futile, to stave off this eventuality. To show mankind that not all metas are self-serving fires of destruction. The question remains; sed quis custodiet ipsos custodes? But who watches the watchmen.
Who watches the watchmen? I do. The weight of the blade in my hand is comforting. Soon another message would be given to the world at large. People are acting out against their would-be protectors and the evil they claim to face. Someone is taking matters into their own hands.

Hero. Villain. They're words thrown around alot these days, but most never wonder what it means to be one. What's a villain? Usually you'll find it's someone who just broke laws, albeit backed up with superhuman muscle. Hero? They stop the villains. And thus, we begin the endless problem.
A villain breaks laws. But laws are not inherently good; there are unjust ones, there are outdated ones, there are flatly vile ones. A hero is only defined by his opposition to villains; he allows his foes to define him, sacrificing a part of himself to get that lusted-for title.
Throughout this book, I will not use these terms, outside of direct quotes. I prefer 'Gods' and 'Monsters', myself, thus the title. Easier to handle. A monster hurts people. Sometimes it's money; they perform a bank robbery estimated at point-nine-billion pounds sterling, and everyone else is holding the tab. Sometimes it's lives, of course, and those make the front page. Other times, they just inflict pain to inflict pain. Incredible power can effect the brain, and there's always those who, even without power, just like hurting people.
Gods stand at the far end; they are benevolent, or try to be. I don't refer to the Judeochristian concept of God, of course. No Meta is perfect, infinite, and so forth. Imagine it more in terms of the ancient legends, of Prometheus giving man fire, of single men who stood fast and held the line against hundreds, perhaps thousands of enemies. A God is not defined by the Monsters he slays. Indeed, Meta-hood is not even a requirement. The man who quietly toils at the next cure that will save billions of lives is probably worthy of the title, though no one will ever build a shrine to him.
Many will still be offended by the terms I use. I accept this. In my own way, I'm offended with how those who take up the title of hero act. Watch the news reports and articles carefully, and you'll see the devastation the truly powerful can wreck when they are not careful. Pinning yourself as a 'Hero' lets you forget this; you serve the Greater Good and Law And Order. A God has something more substantial to answer to: Those he serves, the mortals around him.

"Argent," said Blackheart softly, "wake up." He gently shook the unconscious woman.

A short jog back over the hundred meters or so he had covered in his wild ride, and he snapped back into the real world with a sigh of relief, still coping with what just happened. The light from his shield extinguished, he looked around the now much darker tunnel. For once, his mind wasn't racing along, it was just focused on relief. Then he noticed Argent hanging limply in Blackhearts arms and his eyes widened. "Hey, what happened? Is she okay?" Nervousness crept back in, he was worried that she was seriously hurt, or worse. Of course, now that he could see things at normal speed, he could see her breathing, though at first the motion was confusing. So often he was used to seeing people moving as though swimming through molasses, coming back to a normal frame of reference was difficult sometimes.

Lei's eyes opened, blinking owlishly for a moment before focusing on Blackheart's face. Her eyes glowed faintly in the dim light, a hint of silver inside the black-on-black irises. ".... sorry..." she whispered, the eyes closing again. "... was I out long?"

Hotfoot let out a sigh of relief as Argent woke up, glad that she seemed okay. For a moment, he had worried that he brain had been damaged in the battle of wills.
Once again, all was right with the world as a flood of thoughts came through his mind, thinking about the what ifs of what had just happened, but they all took a backseat to relief. So far, nobody had died...well, on the team, anyway.
One thing that was odd about the situation was Blackheart and Argent. Earlier, they had practically been at each other's throats. Now...well, okay, Blackheart cared about his team, and he wasn't a bad guy when he wasn't being "The Gunny". Still, he'd have to wait until Argent responded before he could get any really good jokes in...assuming he could get them off before Blackheart went back into hardass extreme mode.
His eyes quickly glanced to each of their hands, looking for anything on their fingers.

Argent's eyes close, then open again with a sigh. "It's scary when the Tumor is a friendly presence," she says softly, giving herself a moment to take stock of herself.
The roar of Hotfoot's emotions made her wince. "Ow....." she muttered. "Empathy works ... nearly wish it didn't." She looked up at Blackheart, feeling the mix of human/demon emotions inside him far too clearly. While familar, the demon's emanations were still unfriendly, and she felt it was time to put a little distance between them. "I've never tried that before ... covering you two and Gravitas' party wore me out. If you'll let me, I'll try to stand."
As Blackheart set her down on her feet, she was obviously unsteady on two legs, but solved that by dropping back to her dragonic form and balancing on all four. It was still clear she was not 100%.

Saibot waited, staying back in the darkness, which thanks to the color scheme of his suit, managed to keep him blended in. Short of a light or vision enhancement focusing on him, or some meta-enhanced powers picked him up, he was pretty safe. The area he was in was large enough to hold the team, and then some....
He had to simply await their acknowledgment of his coded signal, and they could proceed.
Then the link twinged, pulsed, and went dead for a few moments, the connection he was always aware of, even peripherally, with Argent, just died. She was there, then she wasn't.
The threads unraveled as quickly as they had been formed, and his mind cleared. The bloodlust and rage were gone, as confusion, then realization flowed upon him.
The ties that bind were snapped in a mere instant.
When she awoke, she'd find a deadzone where he once was, his mind a blank to her.
Beneath the helmet, behind the red starlight lens which took up the front of the helmet, his eyes narrowed, as the confusion faded away, leaving cold, steely resolve.
He knew what he had to do. What needed to be done.
They would have a few minutes to respond, then he was moving in on his own.

"It's a two way street. The tumor's stuck hardwired to me as well as visa versa," said Blackheart. It was clear Argent wasn't going to up to playing teleport fairy for a bit. Blackheart switched channels and hoped the signal would be able to reach Gravitas. "Legacies is up and chomping at the bit. Argent's a little worn so if you can manage to pick him up, we'll have reinforcements."

"oh, good..." Argent answered, distractedly. "Then I don't have to worry about it killing me immediately...." The quip didn't hide the fact she was still unwell.Cynical Cat wrote:"It's a two way street. The tumor's stuck hardwired to me as well as visa versa," said Blackheart.
Something was wrong, something missing, something off inside her mind. She knew it, but she couldn't find it. She searched frantically, trying to identify what it was, and why it was wrong. One by one she touched the threads linking her to the team; Gravitas, Legacies, Blackheart, Hotfoot, Blast, Ghost...
Saibot..... "itsgone"
For the second time, the dragon shuddered and collapsed, leaving Argent kneeling on the ground. "Its gone... he's gone..." she moaned, and the shadows writhed around her as fumbled with her com unit. "SAIBOT!!!!!! Answer me!"

"There's been better times to speak up on channel, Saibot.." Gravitas muttered. The paranoia was reaching it's peak; it was only the fact he could still hear the quiet susurration in the back of his mind that he knew it was fake. He felt alone, more than he had in a long time. "Pushing through an empathic barrier..."
Then Gravitas was through, and waited for the other two. He panted, tapping the headset to the frequency Blackheart was on. "Right.. Gimme a second, I just went through the barrier.. Need to get my bearings.."

Blackheart clamped a hand over Argent's mouth. "Shut the fuck up," he hissed in her ear. "Keep it together. It could be anything, including his fucking ring, that's doing that. The last thing we need is your shouts letting the freaks know we are here."

Sometimes, two facts come together and magically equal one good conclusion, even in Hotfoot's brain. Sometimes, it can even happen more than once, giving the impression that maybe something is working in there. "I think I took care of the noise making a moment ago. The tunnels might confuse people as to which way we're coming from, but I think it's safe to say we've woken up someone by now, and if Argent's link with Saibot is on the fritz, we need another way to get to him."
His heart started to race as he prepared to do yet another stupid thing tonight, volunteer. "I think I'd get there faster, if I could get basic directions. It won't be quiet or stealthy, but we'd still have some surprise, right?" Now wasn't the time for jokes, things had just gotten serious again in a hurry.

**ANGER** boiled into Blackheart's mind as Argent tried to jerk away from him, but it faded away as the more rational Yin-aspect asserted itself. control. peace. water's calm, not fire's passion.
She took a deep breath, and slowly moved Blackheart's hand away so she could speak. "The Ring can't block the link," she murmurred, taking deep breaths to keep herself calm. "We tried that before. One of Ultima's specialists tried to block it, and she couldn't. Like your tumor, the only way out is...."
Argent's head bowed, taking deeper breaths. It was still a moment before she spoke. "I can't feel him, anywhere. There is only emptiness." water over stone
"Gravitas has ways to find people that I do not. I will fetch Legacies, bring him back to this spot." It was a rational choice. Gravitas' team had gone in the direction Saibot had taken, so they would be closer. "I'll go now...."
She faded out of Blackheart's arms, becoming one with the shadows, and was gone....
... A few heartbeats later, she appeared in front of Legacies in dragonform, holding her emotions tightly. "Do you need a situation report?"

Legacies did not seem shocked at all by the arrival of the dragon form, if anything he had expected it sooner. "It can wait until we are on scene. Time is likely of the essence." Legacies stretched some, as though still working all the kinks out.

Hotfoot watched Argent as she faded into the shadows. "...okay, much as I want to know, I don't want to know. I guess we wait for Gravitas." He snapped into the world of slow motion and tapped his radio. "Gravitas, can you get us all to Saibot?" Maybe he was doing Blackheart's job, but honestly, things needed to be done now, and sometimes it seemed like the older man moved too slowly.

Argent paused, her head lowered. "Legacies... I cannot feel Saibot," she confessed, as that had not gone out over the comunits. Legacies did not seem to be phased in the least by the comment. "That is not our concern, Argent." Legacies stepped up to the shadow dragon. "Our only concern is the battle. Take us to it now."

"There is no battle yet, Legacies," Argent answered softly, her eyes half-hooding. what else should she have expected from him? "I will take you to Blackheart."Charon wrote:Legacies did not seem to be phased in the least by the comment. "That is not our concern, Argent." Legacies stepped up to the shadow dragon. "Our only concern is the battle. Take us to it now."
Even as her dragon-shape had changed, so did her method of teleportation. There were no longer wings to stretch over him, but a rushing ring of dragonscales and claws that surrounded him and then vanished with him Between.
There, in the darkness, Legacies could hear the tortured screams of Carter echoing in the distance, the last remnants of that metas unnatural existance caught Between where he had died.
Two heartbeats later, they appeared in front of Blackheart and Hotfoot, the ebony and silver dragon beside the silvery symobiote with no face.

Legacies noticed the screams, but he did not react outwardly to it, his emotions were hidden deeply on what the creature thought of the virus' fate.
As the world re-materialized Legacies 'eyes' immediately locked on Hotfoot, the alien symbiote seeming to stare deep into the young boy, piercing skin down to his very soul, there wasn't any malice, not as any human would recognize it anyway. As far as Legacies was concerned, he was merely examing an unexpected new creature. To everyone else, it seemed as though the symbiote may strike out at Hotfoot at any moment. Legacies did not even move, the head simply stared at the young meta.

"The ring made the link," said Blackheart to Argent as she reappeared. "That means it can probably break it. Stay frosty."
It's not that I'm unforgiving, it's that most of the people who wrong me are unrepentant assholes.

Argent did not need the peptalk from Blackheart at that moment. Instead, she was judging Legacies' alien mood as he stared hungrily at Hotfoot. "Hotfoot... this is Legacies," she started the introductions. "Legacies, Hotfoot just joined Mirage Team. Don't eat him."
