Deathstrike howled through the air at transonic speed, outrunning the sound of his passing. Grassland and trees flashed by beneath the Decepticon as he hunted at speed no human built vehicle could match.

Ahead of him dark specks clung to the earth. On infrared they bloomed with heat. Active sensors went online and painted the crude internal combustion vehicles crawling along the ground. Optics that put Zeiss to shame focused on the vehicles.

Trucks and half tracks. Undisputably German in both design and markings. They hadn't seen him yet. He was approaching from the rear and faster than sound. He slewed left, lining up for a strafing run. "Commencing attack."

He was three kilometers away when he dipped his nose and fired his laser at thirty five percent power. The beam lasted one second. X-rays ionized a lethal passage through the air, connecting killer and victims with a blindingly bright bar of violet light. The beam sliced through the rear part of the convoy. Thin skinned human vehicles exploded and frail human flesh was blown apart.

Deathstrike allowed the laser to cool for two seconds before firing again. The humans with their slow meat reflexes and crude biological brains were only beginning to react to the distant killer. The laser flashed again and more vehicles exploded and more men died.

Two more seconds and Deathstrike was now barely more than a kilometer away. His laser flashed a final time. Now there was nothing but ruined bodies and burning wreckage on the road.

Deathstrike turned off his targeting systems. "Targets destroyed." If there were survivors, partisans would take care of them. "Continuing on."

"Attacking What?!" Pathfinder asked, still on his fruitless patrol along the distant fringes, many kilometers and several minutes from Deathstrike's position and even further from his targets.

"Dammit, why do YOU get to have all the fun?!" Pathfinder bitched over the comms to the rogue Decepticon. "What were they? Germans?" The small Autobot take really didn't think a fight with 'Cons would be over that fast. Even Pathfinder could put up more of a fight against Deathstrike than that. "Could you at least tell me their position, you know."

"HEY! Didn't you call ME that once?" Pathfinder mock-protested. To someone who didn't know the Autobot well, it would seem he was getting upset and riled up. Those who'd known him for more than a week or two would know if Pathfinder was picking on you, you had his respect.

Pathfinder chuckled darkly over the comms. "Yeah, that was it. Anything else moving out there? I think you scared the rest of them into hiding out here."

"Not so far," replied Deathstrike. "Either we're in a low traffic area or the Germans have largely abandoned this region."

"I wasn't the one that decided that sitting around for a month was a good plan of action," said Deathstrike. "You want to muck up your blades then push for more offense."

Pathfinder snorted, sounding like a backfire to anyone who might have been close on the ground. "As if they'd do more than take Scouting Reports from me? Besides, we were waiting for the BreakOut and the rest of the convoy to arrive. Or don't you like your new wingmen?"

There was a pause as Pathfinder tried to decide if Deathstrike had made a joke, or was as serious as he sounded.

"And Misfire..?" the autobot asked cautiously.

"Pulling drag," said Deathstrike. "She hasn't had to do anything yet. Rather hard to evaluate her performance with so little data."

MisFire had been flying in a circuit pattern between Hornet and Deathstrike, though honestly, closer to Hornet then the Decepticon. She had been listening to the banter between Deathstrike and Pathfinder. MisFire banked to the side in a turn as she listened.

"Well, at least you're honest, Deathstrike." She chimed in.

Flash looked up as the heavy equipment approached, and the resonating voice issued forth. He knew from dispatches that new Autobots were due to arrive, in congruence with the big push about to come, and one in particular meant as a new CO for them.

And here it was, and he guessed from the dispatch, the Autobot's name. "Breakout. Welcome to Coldstaph Fortress. You can assume Robot mode whenever you wish within the confines of the fortress...the Joe's here are well used to Autobots in both modes. I have a Command Staff meeting schedualed for 1345h local time. I'm sure you can grab a info pack off the comms system, The Fortress itself seemed to have been built with your race in mind..."

Flash smirked a bit at that, then continued, "For now though, we're prepping supplies and men for a march south to meet up with Battlegroup's Africa and Western at Berlin. We've approximatly 10000 Joe's available to us, with your team of Autobots, and nearly 100,000 infantry men with associated armor and equipment. From what I understand, we're supposed to start marching in four days time. We ain't heard peep from the Snakes since the initial skirmish, though we have dealt with a few isolated Nazi regulars."

The small convoy Deathstrike obliterated with such ease was the only thing which showed up on the scouts. The skies were empty of German presence, the ground, aside from the remains of obviously long abandoned positions, was empty of Nazi presence.

"I'm at the last known German outpost," Pathfinder radioed back to Coldstaph. "Empty, just like the rest of them. Other than the group Deathstrike hit, there's no Germans and no 'Cons for klicks." A pause, then clarification. "Well... no *Enemy* 'Cons. Permission to return to base?"

"I'm changing course to cover the rest of the surrounding area.," said Deathstrike. "I suspect that these were among the last out, but we have to know for sure."

"Correct. We have every intention of keeping secure comms with the Red's main assault force, coming by way of Leningrad. We have secure comms though SkySpy - or as secure as Allied Command says they can be. I'm told the Snakes have one hell of a CommHack on their side..."

Flash seemed taken back for a few moments, before refocusing, We have a few hours before the briefing, I suggest recalling your people and making sure you have your gear prepped for the deployment."

"Nothing," said Deathstrike. "The Germans have well and truly pulled up stakes." The next logical move would be a deep recon, but that would mean a deep recon by a beat up Decepticon flyer, an inexperienced and underdeveloed Autobot, and a single Autobot flyer as back up. "Returning to base," said Deathstrike.

Hornet hadn't said much for the whole flight. High up in the air, above cloud level, he watched on infrared sensors as Deathstrike dove down to strafe a column of enemy forces. At this remove, the realities of what Deathstrike had done to the Germans below was muted, a matter of targets painted on a screen that were there one moment and blinked out of existence in the next, an act as sterile as the refreshing of a computer pixel.

"I don't... I don't see anything..." he said cautiously into his radio as Deathstrike climbed back above the clouds. "Do you really think the Germans are all gone?" He wasn't sure if he felt relieved or disappointed that such was the case, but resolved that so long as he was being allowed to fly, it didn't much matter.

"Yes," said Deathstrike. "What's worth bleeding for up here? There's the Baltics, which don't have much in resources and are split between fascist nationalists and communists so they're no prize. There's Finland, which is taking care of itself. If they fight us and the Americans they're going to bleed out a river in blood and oil and what will it get them?

"Not oil, which the human military machine runs off of. That's in the Caucuses. Minerals? Other parts of the USSR. Food? The breadbasket is the Ukraine. The Industrial cities that create the weapons? That's south and east. There's nothing crucial up here and high command has been content to let us sit in a fortified position. The smart move is to leave us alone and let us sit and shift their armies to break the USSR and take everything of value."

Deathstrike transformed as he came in to land, hitting the ground hard enough to shake it. The Decepticon warrior lumbered passed the humans around him. "Recon flight complete," he said over the radio. "No sign of significant enemy activity in the region. Decepticons may be hiding, but if they attack us it will be without significant German support."
