The spear had impaled right through his left shoulder. However, there was a singular hindrance with spears, Aziz thought as he rammed his body forward, allowing the spearhead to appear on the other side of his body, and grabbing ahold of it tightly with his off-hand.

Suddenly lunging, he would yank the rider off his horse before beheading him, and the other riders would be forced to change their pattern - or trample their own.

The pinned man beneath him carried fire.

Ottar looks at the struggling man with a toothy smile. He drops his axe at his feet too far for the man to reach and drives his fist at the mount's head. This done he lifts his axe again and looking at the man once more he clicks his tongue successively while shaking his head slightly.

The axe sliced through the Byzanium-crafted mail bloodlessly, painfully. Her urge to run from the fire had left Lydia wide open for the blow. With a force of will, she stopped running, instead speeding herself up again with the power of her blood to go again on the offensive.

On the ground was the spearman, dazed and wounded but not dead. Grasping her blade two-handedly, she stabbed the spearman viciously through the face to finish him off. Her face a fanged mask of horror, hissing like a spiteful predator cat, she darted forward swinging the blade low to slice the legs out from under the shieldman before he could fully recover.

Florien noticed that Aziz was in trouble. He would risk hitting him, but he was alone against three horsemen. He drew a bodkin and knocked it.

"Take out the Horseman around the Assamite" he instructed his ghoul who was just then bringing his bow up to fire. The man switched targets, aiming at one of the horseman who was least exposed.

Florien himself targeted the same horseman. Both released their arrows at the same time.

Juergen and Nils were advancing in a line with the rest of the Ghoul infantry with their Halberds in hand. They had taken position in a staggered formation. Each between two shield and spear wielding infantry ghouls. This would give them some protection against attack, while allowing them to use their more versatile polearms to assist their comrades.

This would force the enemy infantry to turn and break their shieldwall, exposing their backs to arrows. (OOC: if my view of the battle is correct anyway)

Konstantin didn't much mind his axe being buried in the shield, not when he had a sword of good German steel in his other hand. He viciously tugged on the axe, drawing the shield out of the way and stabbed for the rich blood tissues and vulnerable spinal cord of the neck and throat.

The three huskarls that had been firing arrows now put them down and picked up their own weapons, climbing over the wall they charged the enemy position. The other ghouls were meanwhile assaulting the infantry, stuck between the still flailing tree limbs on one side, the ghouls on another, and archers on a third they had nowhere to go and so decided to turn and battle the ghouls. One soldier got a little too close to the tree while maneuvering and a thick tree limb came down, smashing him into the ground and pinning him there.

Nicolo was in much less of a rush now that two horses were down and took his time getting to the other downed horseman, only to discover that the man was on his feet. Nicolo swung his sword, but the blow was blocked by the man's spear.

Thorkell and Gudrun had begun their battle with the other horsemen and so far it was hard to say which way the fight would go.

Konstantin had only limited success in pulling the shield out of the way as his opponent resisted him, but it was enough for a shot at his enemy's neck. But his opponent was not without a sword of his own and he drew it up just as Konstantin swung, the block was only partially successful, but it did manage to divert the blow into his shoulder instead where his heavy chainmail took the weakened blow. Then, just as suddenly as it disappeared, sounds returned to both participants.

Lydia finished off the spearman with little trouble. He begged for his life in desperation but her sword easily broke through one eye socket with a soft pop, driving deep through bone and brain before popping out through the other side and stopping against his helmet. Lydia needed to tug for a second to dislodge her sword, but the sword came free and she was on to the other man. Her sudden duck to go for his legs surprised the shieldman and he was too slow to bend down as well to block. There was nothing more protective than leather on the man's lower legs, and without his shield in the way this time, Byzantine steel cut easily through Milanese leg, slicing deeply through bone and flesh. With a scream the man went down, clutching at his dangling shin.

Ottar was surprised as the man he had pinned began to push the horse off of himself, managing to lift it just enough to free his leg. He scrambled to his feet and faced the vampire with his shield up.

Florien's and Thomas's arrows flew true. Thomas's arrow struck the rider's leg and buried itself deeply in it. Florien's arrow flew through the air, as though divinely guided, and struck the rider in the neck. Going in one side and coming out the other. With a gurgle the man slumped over on his horse.

Aziz finished pushing the spear through his chest, causing even more damage to himself. There were two things happened because of Aziz's lunge. The first was that the rider who had the spear, rather than being thrown from his horse, simply let go of his spear. This was disappointing for Aziz, but in good news it meant continued attempts to trample him with their horses would risk injury to said horses. As one rider slumped over, the odds tilted only slightly in Aziz's favor, injured as he was now, and with a spear sticking completely through him, he could not hope to outrun or outmaneuver two horses. Regardless, the horseman that had released their spear now hopped off their horse, drawing sword and shield to confront Aziz on foot.

A much larger grin now. Strong for a ghoul... or reckless for a vampire?
Ottar swings with the aim of sundering the man's shield, bringing his own up in expectation of a return attack. The terrible sound of mangled laughter erupts from him. This was unexpected--and fun!

Leaving the wounded man, Lydia now turned to the other ghoul infantry, who were now starting to engage the huskarls. Torches were dropped as men drew their swords and axes, leaving the battlefield adequately lit, but less of a danger to a Chylde of Cain.

Lydia danced across the battlefield, avoiding the downed torches to strike at the back of a ghoul already trying to use his spear to hold off a huskarl. There was no chivalry here, no honorable combat. As on the walls of Constantinople, she meant to put down as many of her enemies as she could, as quickly as she could. Flanking, backstabbing, double-teaming, whatever it took to end another enemy threat, whether by death or by maiming. Drop them so they can't get up, can't fight back.

Later, she would drink their blood and finish them off.

Konstantin further increased his strength and raised his sword and brought it down like a butcher's cleaver. There were limits to what even Milanese mail could take and Konstantin was well on the other side of them. He had tried precision, but the vampire was still in shape to block. Time to beat, or hack, the fight out of him. Then there was noise again.

"I am your future!" the Tzimisce roared. "After me there is nothing! I am your end!" he shouted as hacked at the vampire in front of him with inhuman strength.

Most of the other archers had dropped their bows and were engaging in hand to hand combat. Thomas was still readying his bow, but Florien was faster. He pulled another bodkin and drew back his bow. He leveled it toward the man who had just dismounted to engage Aziz.

He released, sending his goose-feathered shaft lancing toward his target.

Jürgen and Nils worked in concert. With a spearman between them, each one went to work. Jürgen brought his polearm down on the man across from him, while Niles made a lunge for the same man, trying to make him defend himself from multiple angles, the spearman across from Nils being engaged by the spearman Nils' right.

With a swift motion, the spear was yanked from Aziz' undead flesh to land with a soundless clatter on the ground, thanks to the still-active Silence of Death. The wound began to close even as the spear fell.

When the spear hit the ground, Aziz struck the grounded rider with the force of a summer desert storm, relentless and debilitating as his sword was eagerly about to cleave through night air, flesh, armor, and bone.

The free horseman that had been helping to rein in Aziz now had his own problems as three huskarls surrounded him and began their attack. The fight at the front quickly turned on the defenders as Thorkell crushed one horseman's head under the weight of his axe. Gudrun, who had been dismounted by an attacker, let out a blood curdling scream as she brought her two-handed axe down on the horse of her attacker, nearly splitting the creature's head in two.

Nicolo called upon his own speed again and quickly slaughtered the spearman who stood against him, nearly quartering him.

The vampire Konstantin had skewered quietly yanked the spear free of his dead horse and moved his feet so he was free of the horse, but was careful not to bring attention to himself.

The remaining infantry had managed to hold off their attackers until Lydia struck at them from behind. With spears on one side and a vampire on the other, any thought of discipline shattered as the infantry was sent into a rout.

Ottar's opponent managed to get his shield in the way, it did not fall apart under the blow, but it cracked. Rather than swing his axe where he knew the enemy's shield would be, the man instead performed a spinning maneuver, opening himself up for an attack but also bringing his own axe around to Ottar's undefended side. The axe bit deeply into the Einherjar's shoulder.

Konstantin brought his sword down and this time it was met fully by his opponent's sword. Konstantin's superior strength pushed the other man's defenses down, but hadn't broken them just yet. Knowing the inevitable of this fight he spurred his horse and it jumped forward, under the jolt of pressure the shield finally splintered and broke apart. The enemy was getting away but Konstantin could get one blow in before his enemy was too far away and he would be forced to pursue.

Florien's arrow sped through the air and stuck into his target's belly. The man barely seemed to notice. Aziz struck quickly and with power, the blow was parried slightly by his enemy's own sword, but still struck against the mail, cutting just barely through the chainmail and cutting a small scratch on his foe. The man looked directly then at Aziz, his face contorting into a horrid visage as he bared his fangs at the Assamite, a supernatural tremor ran down the Child of Haqim's spine.

Lydia and the Genovese ghouls made short work of the Milanese fighters, with one falling to her blade, another to Florien's men, and the huskarls taking the last.

Now, in this temporary lull, Lydia took the time to check on her allies, the Gangrel to the fore, Konstantin and the others to the rear. Oddly... the one who seemed most in need was the Assamite.

Letting the Blood work its power Ottar sends yet more strength into his limbs. The berserk takes full advantage of the opening offered to him and brings his axe around in a backhanded sweep within the now open gap between shield and axe arm where lies the upper torso. Flush with new power now he roars his challenge to his opponent.

For just a brief moment, the visage of the invading vampire shocked Aziz. However, his training would not allow him to be surprised for long. Reaching within his reserves of pure, raw will, Aziz clenched his teeth to glare back as the raw need to be free, to overcome took him.

Blood flooded through his limbs as he let loose a soundless yell, suddenly lunging with a strong slash at this vampire's snarling face.

Konstantin smashed his axe into his opponent's steed. A pity about the damage to the loot, but he had no intention of letting his prey escape.

The infantry were routing. Excellent Florien thought as yet another arrows was knocked. The infantry and Lydia would take care of them. There was a rider being mobbed by Ghouls. Minimal risk of hitting the ghouls.

Florien and Thomas turned their bows toward him aimed, and released.

Thorkell's cry came over the din of battle to all those on the field. "The battle is ours! Take their leaders captive!" Their leaders would, obviously, be whatever vampires had led this party.

The infantry died to the last at the blade of Lydia and the ghouls. Taking stock of the situation she could see that the battle was indeed almost over. Thorkell and Gudrun still railed against the remaining horsemen at the front, Ottar had his battle, Aziz his, but for the most part they had shattered the enemy.

Ottar's battle didn't last much longer. No armor had yet been built that could take a blow as Ottar delivered it. Chain broke easily and the axe head drove relentlessly through his opponent's torso, cutting him in two and splattering blood everywhere. Ottar, covered from head to foot in blood now, looked more like a creature of nightmares than anything remotely human.

Florien and Thomas released their arrows. The spinning of the horse as it's rider tried to beat back attack from three directions caused one to miss, but the second lodged in his thigh. An axe blow from the back knocked the rider off of his horse then and he was quickly beat into submission by the ghouls.

Konstantin's axe hit the horse and hit it hard, the creature stumbled and fell, throwing it's rider off of him, who came to the ground with a crash and rolled to a stop.

The vampire Konstantin had dropped at the beginning of the battle got to his feet again now, pulling the spear out of his chest. With a mighty hurl he launched it at Nicolo and the blade caught the other vampire in the side, breaking through the armor and stabbing into his side. The brujah stumbled as the spear's thrower turned and made a run for it.

Aziz's blade struck well, the Assamite weaving his blade through his enemies defenses to strike a good gash across his enemy's face. The opponent, realizing the futile endeavor of this fight, did not take his chance to strike back at the Assamite but instead turned and ran for the forest

Out of all the Vampires other than Niccolo, Lydia knew she had the best chance to catch one of the runners. The one running from Aziz was the closest, and Lydia again tapped the speed that was her Clan birthright and sped after him.

Catching him would be tricky, she knew. She wanted him alive. He had no reason to keep her in the same condition. Still, if she caught him, it would both stick in the craw of the Sheriff, and prove Virgil was right in allying with her. Everyone wins.. but the poor Milanese she was chasing.

Konstantin rode his horse over the downed vampire and then pulled up short, turning his steed around to rear up and plunge down with both of his front hooves on the downed vampire.

Looking every bit a monster and knowing it the berserk licks the blood from his axe hand, savoring its taste. He is hungry but Odin's gift gives him, ironically, control. There is still work to do. Problem is, he is at the fore and the fleeing enemy are at the rear. Two run, one is caught.
As he ponders this he is running towards the remaining enemy, his great strength lending his stride an air of disdain for the hard ground. As he approaches a downed infantry man in reasonably good condition he makes a snap decision and slings his shield over his shoulder to make room for the body which he lifts with his shield arm. I just need a little... if Odin leaves me now I'll be a danger to everyone. he thinks as he bites down.

Lydia's chase would have gone on for much longer if not for the two figures that appeared out of the mists in front of the fleeing vampire. The vampire slowed down, trying to figure out which way to go now that he was trapped, and in that time Lydia caught up.

Gudrun dispatched a rider with ease as Thorkell himself was beginning to subdue his own foe, tearing off one of his arms and throwing it to the side. His opponent was apparently completely mad, grabbing one of the fallen torches he set himself aflame. "The first angel, Michael did curse Caine, his eyes blazed with scarlet fire and the flames of his sword scorched my clothes and my flesh. 'Creature of pride,' ' he pronounced, ' 'be thou damned, then, not by my will, but by thy own words. My fire shall be an enemy to you, that you and your children shall fear until the end of time'." By now, the flames were covering the man's entire body, but he did not stop, he did not even seem to notice he was on fire. " 'Not all the magic that you have learned can tame it. Not all the power you have gained can withstand it. Such is the curse I set upon you. Until the day your spirit is humbled. Such is-' " the vampire's voice died as the flame consumed him in full. The corpse slumped to the ground as the fire continued to consume it.

Konstantin's horse began to be unsteady as the vampire it had just smashed with it's front legs started to get to his feet again. The man was incredible durable it appeared.

The final vampire, it appeared, would make good his escape as he bolted from the fight with no pursuers. Then in a flash the shadows around him reared up high. The man came to an unsteady stop and screamed as the shadows folded tightly around him and then sank back into the earth, leaving no trace of the man behind.

The sweet, sweet lifeblood was intoxicating but all good things come to an end. There was still work to do.

Observing this, the berserk moves in to deal with the problem. He is more than an immensely strong rage-infused warrior, he is also highly skilled with the use of many manner of weapons and has his own measure of cunning. But right now, rage seems more useful. His new opponent is clearly able to take a beating, so the problem requires a solution which involves a greater beating. As he closes the gap Ottar suddenly charges full out, his axe now wielded two handed swings back and up for maximum power and then comes crashing to earth with all his strength and his movement behind it. Accompanying this is an ear paining roar of inhuman quality.

EDIT: grammer

The vampire she was chasing slowed as Olaf and Vannius Claudius Secondus appeared. Lydia did not, once again swinging her sword viciously low against the back of the vampire's legs. If she did not slice them off entirely, she would at least hamstring him for long enough to capture and hold him.

The blow hit both legs as she wanted. The far leg had the back of the knee sliced open, the closer leg was mangled horribly but not removed as Lydia drew her sword along it as she continued past him. As the Vampire crumbled with a pained cry, Lydia stopped short of the two Genovese Elders. A flick of her blade got the worst of the blood off it before she held it up in front of her in salute. "Lord Olaf," she said, head bowing slightly, then the blade dropped respectfully with a deeper dip of her head to Virgil's Sire. "Your Grace."

Then, she turned and walked back to the downed Vampire, grabbing him by the back of the armor and starting to drag him back to the rest of his downed fellows.

Konstantin nudged his horse to the side. Striking a man lying on the ground was hard from horseback, but trampling him is easy. Konstantin's solution to the problem of the prone vampire was to "encourage" him to get up by repeatedly trampling him, an act much more dangerous to a human than a vampire. Now that he was up-

Konstantin's axe came down.
