Nadya hung in the darkness, considering the most important decision of her life, wishing it was all a dream, that she was back in America, back amongst the segment of humanity that really did resemble insects. She used to hate them, hold them in utter contempt. But they were her people, toyed with so cruelly by these beings from beyond

Why me?, she wanted to ask, but she knew that these...things would only laugh. We are but tools to them, or raw materials. But not insignificant, despite their words. They need us. And that is their weakness .

For the first time in her life, she knew what she really wanted, and she knew which of the choices would get her there.

The one which gave her the most freedom.

"I choose the Smith," she whispered at last.

Zach swallowed, hard. Whatever was going on was clearly beyond his level of understanding. The nasty one claimed it hadn't killed his partner, but Zach didn't find him all that trustworthy. The other one, meanwhile, had at least made noises about protecting human lives.

Saving lives and helping people was his life's goal, the thing that had set him down this bizarre path in the first place. Decision made.

"If I've gotta choose...I'm gonna go with the one who hasn't outright stated they want to cause human suffering. Entomologist for me, thanks."
