The basic idea is that each player takes on the role of a scholar, historian, or investiator. You are cranky, opinionated, prejudiced and eccentric. You are also collaborating with a number of your peers -- the other players -- on the construction of an encyclopedia describing some historical period.

The game is played in 26 turns, one for each letter of the alphabet.

1. On the first turn, each player writes 1-2 entries for the letter 'A'. You come up with the name of the entry, and you write on the subject. At the end of the article, you sign your name, and make two citations to other entries in the encyclopedia. These citations will be phantoms -- their names exist, but their content will get filled in only on the appropriate turn. All citations on turn one have to start with a letter other than A.

2. On the second and subsequent turns, you continue to write entries for B, C, D and so on. However, you need to make three citations. One must be a reference to an already-written entry, and two must be to unwritten entries. (On the 25th and 26th turns, you only need to cite one and zero phantom entries, respectively, because there won't be enough phantom entries, otherwise.)

It's an academic sin to cite yourself, you can never cite an entry you've written. (OOC, this forces the players to intertwingle their entries, so that everybody depends on everyone else's facts.) Incidentally, once you run out of empty slots, obviously you can only cite the phantom slots.

3. Despite the fact that your peers are self-important, narrow-minded dunderheads, they are honest scholars. No matter how strained their interpretations are, their facts are accurate as historical research can make them. So if you cite an entry, you have to treat its factual content as true! (Though you can argue vociferously with the interpretation and introduce new facts that shade the interpretation.)

Who might be interested in trying this?

Well, for those truely interested in the game, head over to the LA Wiki that I've got set up for the game. Check the rules page for a few more details and start thinking of your characters.

The topic posted on the main page is the topic of the game. That's all you know about the world and it's places and people going into this. Its up to you to create it, build it up, and fill in the blanks and unravel the secrets of the Torestian Wars.

For those not familar with how to edit a wiki article, here's a page that will give you a short list of the more important commands and markups you'll be using. To create a new wiki page type the name you want for your article on the left side in the search bar and hit go. It'll take you to a page saying that "that article does not exist" and that you can create it by editing the information. Edit the info and save it to publish it. Remember the commentary and categories...

Any more questions get in touch with me here or on IM and I'll try to help. Frigid and Rheonix I know are in, I'll end up playing myself. Havoc, DS, Charon?

There's no turn order persay. It's whoever wants to start it off. The only turn order is which letters we're doing currently. For instance, we're of course starting with A. When everyone has done a couple articles we'll move on to B, then C an so on following the rules format.

What I'll probably do s a basic 'deadline' is set each letter for a full week, which should give all players the chance to post at least a few times. If we move faster than that, so be it...

Easiest way I've found is in the search bar to the left side of the screen type in the name of whatever article you want to create and hit go. It won't be there, of course, but it will give you something that says approximately this:
Search results
From LibArc

You searched for test
Jump to: navigation, search

There is no page titled "test". You can create this page.
The create this page should be a red hyperlink. Click on that and it'll take you to the edit menu for whatever it is you're making.

Or there's a semi-shortcut way through the address bar.

Code: Select all

http://libriumarcana.com/wiki/index.php?title=Test&action=edit
In this case replace "Test" with whatever the title is and it'll automatically generate it and take you directly to the edit screen. Hopefully this helps everyone.

Posted two A entries up as well as a short character bio. Created a phantom articles reference on the side nav section to see what hasn't been done yet and who created them first.

Anyone who's still interested is of course free to join up and post.

Finally figured out Wiki enough to post Erdrick Kheldon.

EDIT: there, two articles related to the Kingdom of Arkhagen have been posted.
