The year is 6133.

Two thousand years ago, Humanity emerged from a freak ice age and multiple wars ready to explore the stars.

A thousand years ago, colonization of other worlds began. The first near-terran world found was Terra Nova. The colonization effort exploded, but after several hundred years of feeding the resources of Earth into the colonies, general support of the colonies was cut off, and Earth fell into an age of isolationism, forcing the colonies to fend for themselves in 5846.

For hundreds of years, Terra Nova built itself up from the shattered remnants of the aborted colonization effort. Two major powers formed in the process, the Confederated Northern City States (CNCS) and the Allied Southern Territories (AST). Conflicts raged over rights to the resource-rich badlands and political ideologies. While the water was calm on the surface, underneath boiled a potentially world-ending conflict, referred to commonly by people in the know as the "Judas Syndrome".

In 6118, Earth returned to Terra Nova with an invasion force. Genetically modified super-soldiers known as GRELs supported by lightning fast hovertanks landed on the planet with the intention of retaking the colony by force. The military buildup caused by the Judas Syndrome left both polar alliances ready and eager to fight back with legions of Gears, a bipedal fighting machine developed during the period of isolation. Not as tough as tanks, these robots were still fast and lethal combatants. The CNCS and the AST banded together to fight this common threat, and the War of the Alliance was started.

In 6120, Earth's remaining fleet was forced to withdraw, abandoning thousands of their own people, human and GREL alike. The abandoned forces rallied under Colonel Arthur and created a settlement in the Badlands around one of the major bases created in the first invasion group. The Polar Nations turned towards rebuilding after the hard-fought war.

It is now thirteen Terran years after the War of the Alliance ended for Earth. Old rivalries between the Northern and Southern states have come back to the surface, and hostilities have been more overt than ever.

Three weeks ago, Reverend Thor Hutchinson, the Second Follower of the Revisionist Church, the single largest religion on the planet, was assassinated at point-blank range by Colonel Neel Garner Fulan, the man Hutchinson was presenting with the North's highest honor, the Hero's Sword.

The local calendar is 22 Autumn, 1935, and war seems inevitable.





Basic Game Info Stuff

The players are a group of mercenaries operating as an independent part of a loose organization of smaller merc groups. They start out in Khayr-Ad Din, the City of Trash.

I've talked with a few people about the possibility of running this game, and while not everything is shored up just yet, I figured I'd throw my hat into the ring now, as by the time characters are finished and everyone's clear on how it all will work, I should be ready to go.

Characters would be Gear Pilots, please note that while you can make a character who does not pilot a Gear, you would be at a severe disadvantage in Gear-scale combat and it would not be recommended. Characters can be from any place on the planet, I just ask that they have a good reason for being Badlands Mercenaries.

I will be using full SilCORE v3 rules for the characters, here is a tool to help you create a character.

Starting characters get 30 CP and 80 SP.

-Heavy Gear 3rd Edition Player's Handbook OR Life on Terra Nova 2nd Edition + Into the Badlands + Duelist's Handbook + Gear & Equipment Guide (The former incorporates all of the latter)
-2nd Edition Technical Manual
-3rd Edition Terra Nova Companion

Gears are to be purchased with the Property perk, which may not exceed 5 points. No custom gears will be accepted unless they follow scratchbuilt rules and the weapons follow the standard set.

Combat will be via board, with each turn being self-contained so that all rolls needed for one player's turn will be within one post. Tactical maps will be put up to aid in combat.

I am interested in participating in this game. I have a character in mind, Adrien Orsat former pilot of the Southern Republic in exile in the badlands. His gear would be a Razor Fang Cobra Fire Support/Officer Gear. I have been thinking about how Adrien would look, I am currently leaning towards stealing Karl Urban. :wink:

Hehe. I have always been pretty anal about character sheets with the silhoutte system since after you get proficient with it, making a character is pretty easy. Realistically, all you need is the first three componenets. Attributes, Skills, Perks/Flaws (if any). Eventually, you want to have a gear section but that is only because everyone in this game will have a gear of some type. The first three is all you really "need" for a perfectly valid character sheet.

In the interest of full disclosure, I did two sheets (single sided) on House D'Azurentien detailing the approximate levels of the major retainers and family members, their place in the house, how closely they were related to Nalifan, and their relationship with Nalifan.

For reference, for people who do not have any books, here is a link that gives a brief overview of the setting.

For players who are interested, here's a list of common Gears and Weapons:

Northern:

Cheetah-The premier scouting and recon Gear, it's the most maneuverable Gear on the planet, but is also the most thinly armed and armored in its stock loadout. It does, however, have a powerful ECM suite and a target designator system. Different variants, however, have made this into a lethal, if still fragile platform.
Primary Weapons (Stock): Collapsible Light AutoCannon, Light Rocket Pack 24, Hand Grenade, Vibroblade

Hunter-This is the most common Gear on the planet, most commonly used in General Purpose Squads. There's nothing overly special about the Stock Model, other than it is very easy to modify, and as such, has many variants running around.
Primary Weapons (Stock): Light Autocannon, Light Rocket Pack 24, Anti-Personnel Grenade Launcher, Hand Grenade, Vibroblade

Jaguar-The first of the next generation Gears, the Jaguar is meant to eventually phase out the Hunter. It is more expensive, but this expense is commonly considered well worth it by experienced pilots, as it results in better armor, mobility, and firepower. However, it is not as easy to modify as the Hunter, though several variants do exist.
Primary Weapons (Stock): Medium Autocannon, Light Rocket Pack 32, Anti-Personnel Grenade Launcher, Hand Grenade, Vibroblade

Grizzly-A fire support Gear, the Grizzly generally carries much heavier armaments than other Gears. It is slower and less maneuverable, but also tends to have better armor.
Primary Weapons (Stock): Heavy Autocannon, Medium Rocket Pod 18 (x2), Heavy Machine Gun, Collapsible Light Autocannon (Backup Weapon), Heavy Guided Mortar, Vibroblade


Southern:

Iguana- This Gear is the Southern Counterpart to the Cheetah. It is not as fast or maneuverable as its cousin, but it is considerably more durable, making it a good choice for those who enjoy the role of recon, but do not enjoy thin armor.
Primary Weapons (Stock): Collapsible Light AutoCannon, Light Rocket Pack 24, Hand Grenade, Vibroblade

Jager- A carbon copy of the Hunter, the Jager is different only in appearance and variants. The South stole the Hunter design back when it was first created, and the versatile platform has served both Leagues well over quite a long period of time.
Primary Weapons (Stock): Light Autocannon, Light Rocket Pack 24, Anti-Personnel Grenade Launcher, Hand Grenade, Vibroblade

Black Mamba- The counterpart to the Jaguar, the Black Mamba is similar in some respects, but very different in others. Like the Jaguar, it is meant as a replacement for the aging Jager chassis, and both fill very similar roles. However, the Black Mamba has slightly stronger armor than the Jaguar, enough to improve its overall longevity on the battlefield, unless the Mamba exposes its vulnerable back to the enemy. Some Republican Soldiers boast that there's no need to fix this potentially fatal flaw, as no true son of the Republic would dare run from a Northerner.
Primary Weapons (Stock): Medium Autocannon, Light Rocket Pack 32, Anti-Personnel Grenade Launcher (x2), Hand Grenade, Vibroblade

Spitting Cobra- This Support Gear is tougher than the Grizzly, but again, fills much the same role, though its loadout depends more on unguided indirect firepower than the Grizzly.
Primary Weapons (Stock): Heavy Autocannon, Heavy Rocket Pack 48, Medium Rocket Pack 18, Light Machine Gun, Light Guided Mortar, Hand Grenade, Vibroblade

There are plenty of variants available, so if anyone has specific requests, please do let me know. I know that most people do not have the gear books available, so in lieu of that, if someone tells me what role they want their gear to play, I will help select a gear of the nationality that the player wants to best suit their needs.

BACKGROUND

Fenrir is a typical example of a Razor Fang Cobra designed specifically for officers to maintain unit cohesion in the field and communicate with the rest of the cadre as well as headquarters. Due to the low speed and maneuverability of the gear, Adrien maneuvers Fenris into medium range combat where its armor and weaponry can be optimally utilized. Allied target designators can be used to increase the accuracy of its guided mortar system, while its heavy rocket pack can saturate enemy infantry and gear locations. For self defense, the awesome Junglemower very heavy auto cannon can dissuade all but the most fanatical or foolhardy of adversaries from approaching too close. Fenris is ideally a medium range fighter, designed to support faster and more maneuverable gears in combat.

Since his exile from the Southern Republic, Adrien Orsat has considered several potential upgrades to his machine. The first of which is an actual electronic warfare suite. The system would allow Fenris to jam the communications of lesser geared adversaries, preventing their effective coordination and disabling the ability of target designators to be adequately used against his team. The significant cost of installing such a system as well as the difficulty of finding a suitable electronic package in the badlands has so far prevented this ambition to be realized. Adrien has also considered the possibility of installing a cluster of dedicated long-range targeting systems for his weapon systems. Such a cluster would increase the accuracy of linked weapon systems at long and extreme range.

Some people just don't fit in. Marcus Chang wasn't a trouble maker, at least not according to him, but he wanted more options. And while White Rock was a nice place to live, it was too confining. In the Humanist Alliance if you push too hard for your own space, it pushes back. Hard.

This left signing up for the MILICIA the best of bad options. It turned out he wasn't half bad at it, but it was still living in a place that was too tight. So after his hitch was up he left, leaving behind loving but exasperated parents and silently relieved siblings. He discovered that the rest of the world wasn't that much better and was in a lot of ways worse. Too many of the Southern states were repressive and the North was freer, but stupid in far too many ways. Don't get him started on the Badlands.

There was a third path, open to a bold, talented young man. Mercenaries don't live the common social rules and money brings with it the power to break them or push them aside. So now he pilots a Gear for pay.

Appearance: A reasonably good looking man of Eurasian descent with dark hair and eyes. Average height and build, light tan skin. He's in good physical shape, with an easy, impish smile. He's very quick, capable of going exploding into action in the blink of an eye.
