I think it had to do with the rhyming scheme. Which makes me fear for bad Cockney rhymes from the GM. But I'm fairly certain it's that and not simply a complete lack of giving a shit...
Wait, who's running this game again? ... Y'know what, I retract my statement... it's the complete lack thing.

Ummm, if he's a cop, would that not entail some form of basic combat training? Y'know like basic firearms, physical exercise and endurance, apprehension and take downs of criminals, joint locks, etc?Comrade Tortoise wrote:As for drawbacks, what do you want exactly? The usual drawbacks with wizardry apply. The use of magic is physically draining, he has next to no combat training other than the ability to focus while casting spells and not panic. I did not feel the need to put those in because they are fucking obvious.
I mean it's s basic requirement that you have some form of physical fitness and be able to pass a firearms test. Which would clearly give you at a minimum a measure of proficiency with firearms and a level of physical fitness to be able to run down bad guys.
Or is this a case of your guy being such a bad ass that the basic requirements of his job are wavered and ignored? Because if that's the case I then have to wonder how the hell he made detective in just three years without any sort of academy training or any other qualifications to make him a cop. Well, I suppose forms processing counts as a qualification for doing the mind-numbing amount of paperwork, but beyond that you say he's a wizard who works as a detective who knows pathology. But has no skills in handling a firearm, taking out a perp or any other generally physical knowledges or skills one would associate with a cop.
So really I'm at the point where I have to wonder who he blew and/or slept with to get the badge and have the hand-wavium over his application.

Ok CT, here are my suggestions:
1. Just make him a Black Mage, and start him out with a few Final Fantasy-ish Black Magic spells, like Fire1, Ice1, Bolt1, Water1, Poison1, Stun and maybe Focus or something.
2. Just make him a former scientist. The amount of tap-dancing your two previous characters have to perform to even approach being believable is somewhat shocking. Besides, making him a scientist first makes hermetic magic (like Black magic, for instance) far more reasonable.

I was trying to break my usual idiom a little bit, lest I get accused of creating a Gary Stu.Windswept wrote:Ok CT, here are my suggestions:

I get that, but honestly, it might be easier. Or, you could ditch Black Magic altogether and be a Blue Mage, learning the talents of the native flora and fauna.Comrade Tortoise wrote:I was trying to break my usual idiom a little bit, lest I get accused of creating a Gary Stu.

Or you have a police department that while functional is not identical to a modern police department. You have people in it who are a combination of normals, various video game characters, Mario's of various shapes and sizes.B4UTRUST wrote:Ummm, if he's a cop, would that not entail some form of basic combat training? I had assumed that the ability to blast down a wall, or simply make a nice little hole go through someone's chest would obviate the need for firearms. Same with telekinesis and the need for running and joint locks. Of course the use of a tracking spell would be damned nice for a detective to have.
He does not have to be a fucking god for the spells at his disposal to be damned useful for sort of thing. Of course if you want me to add in those various skills I can easily do that. And then you will bitch about that too.

I'm reposting this character after some extensive edits. Here is the new (and mostly improved) Matthew Corvin.
Name: Seth Gabriel
Age: 28
Physical Description: Seth stands 6'1" tall, with unruly silver hair, piercing blue eyes, and a medium frame. He wears plain t-shirts beneath a long, black wool trenchcoat, with paratrooper boots under jeans.
Biography: Appearing suddenly near Old Town, Seth only knew his name when he appeared in this world and began to wander, having lost all memory of who he was before he came to this place. Since then he's been doing what he must to survive, following the path of the Grey Mage by instinct.
He used the raw power within him to stand up for justice when he felt it was necessary, which unfortunately can be often near Old Town. He wanders to find his purpose and memories both, and in the meantime, to explore this strange world he somehow knows isn't his own.
Seth is a reserved, though direct man with a curious and intelligent mind, something that has served him well in the time he's been here.
Archetype: Arcanist (Grey Mage)
Powers / Items: Uncanny Senses, Black Magus, White Magus
* Uncanny Senses: Besides having preternaturally sharp senses, Seth also has a danger sense that can alert him even when all other senses fail to detect a threat. Due to this ability, he is nearly impossible to surprise-attack.
* Black Magus: The instant Seth arrived, he felt the power pulsing within his entire being, seeking a way to escape. Evoking that energy into destructive energies comes as naturally to him as it does creating protective energies - but much more fun.
** Fire (causes instantaneous combustion of all flammable materials, and severe burns. Can target a single point for a more powerful effect, or a designated area)
** Ice (causes spontaneous freezing of all materials, and severe frostbite on exposed flesh. Can target a single point for a more powerful effect, or a designated area)
** Thunder (causes a bolt of lightning to connect the ground to the sky, causing burns and combustion of flammable materials within the area struck. Can target a single point for a more powerful effect, or a designated area)
** Stun (Can temporarily overload a target's nervous system, resulting in temporary lack of action. Can target a single point for a more powerful effect, or a designated area)
* White Magus: Though not quite as much fun to focus his inner strength on as Black Magic, being a White Mage also means Seth is twice as capable - and he's no less powerful in this fashion.
** Cure (Fixes wounds without scarring, removing a certain amount of injuries from the target. Can target a single point for a more powerful effect, or a designated area)
** Heal (Removes all negative afflictions from the target. Can target a single target only)
** Protect (Creates a thin layer of protection around the target's entire body, reducing all non-magical damage received. Can target a single target only)

Where to begin.....
let's see.....
Windswept: approved as is. I'm choosing to not allow you the Scan spell, just yet. You get to earn it later.
CT: ....Approved.
On Old Town:
I've mentioned it to several of you, but I am going to make it clear here: Old Town has the stylistic look of a city from the 1920-1940 North America. Neon signs, greasy spoons, wide streets with tracks for street cars running down the middle...etc etc. To get a idea, go back and watch "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" or one of the old Detective Noir films. There's more "modern" elements strewn about, but Old Town itself, is very much that old timey place. The city isn't brightly light and shiny, if anything, Old Town is also a grimmer, darker place than it used to be in it's heyday before the Megatropolis literally pushed it out as the crown jewel.
It looks like a section of the overall town that should have died along time ago, but is holding on stubbornly. There is even a atmosphere of depression and fear that has become palatable in some places (mostly due to the Cannibal over the past three months).
For the most part, the police tend to ignore Old Town...and those cops who do come here, are harder people, meaner folks - folks who really don't give a shit about Old Town and it's inhabitants, except for what they can get out of the place before they get transferred to someplace in the Megatropolis or anywhere nicer.
If you have any questions, ask, but hopefully the description makes sense.

So at this point...pretty much anything else I could add to bring you all together is minor at best.
I'll make GM posts as nessacry, but everyone has the tools required and the instructions to begin their quest.
So now it falls on the two groups (Fisher Tev and Havoc in group 1, and Nitram and frigid in group 2) to go in search of the others, and meet up in the center.
In the center there will be a big party, it will have cake
And Polka.
