Well, Veritas wanted to catch up on his reading anyway. And go cow-tipping.

Post edited due to misreading Havoc.

Ok, I'm ignorant here, since I haven't read the books.

What's a Stuka, and what's so special about them, apart from them being German goth dragons?

They aren't in the books. They are Havoc's own creation.

What's special about them? The Inbreeding needed to create them has left them with several nasty traits. The sight/scent of the Stukas seem to be enough to make other dragons, even Jotuns, uneasy around them. Jebediah is going to put it quite bluntly: "Tha' one's jis' plain --wrong--."

Ah, thank you Tev.

...But isn't "stuka" also Russian for "bitch?"

Methinks Veritas would have some fun with that one.

Stuka is German for "gull", I believe. I'm sure the Russians had their own names.

Rhoenix, check the first page of this OOC thread. Stukas are listed there as one of the German breeds. The reason they've yet to make an appearance is that nobody knows a damn thing about them, as they're employed solely by the SS. They are exceedingly bad news.

I think even Veritas would not make jokes at these dragons, unless you were miles and miles away, and then only in whispers.

Havoc may correct me if I'm wrong, but I see the Stuka as just that little bit off. Their color is too flat, their scent too bittersweet, their bodies just a little asymetrical, their voices have disconserting harmonics, their eyes a little too dead.

None of these are things that stand out on their own, or may even be noticed conciously by dragon or human. But together, like the elves of legend, all these things scream to the primitive hind-brains of dragon and human alike of WRONGNESS.

Ah, thank you for the pointer.

Still though, if Veritas or Captain Braithwaite hear the breed's name, I don't think they could keep a straight face.

EDIT: Though I may concede that jokes probably would not be told in a Stuka's presence.

That is... by and large correct, Tev, something on the edge of perception regarding the Stuka that simply screams "WRONG" to anyone, dragon or human, that sees them, save their handlers of course who are all SS to begin with.

And you're free to laugh at the Stukas if you want or not, but be prepared for the result :D.

Ah, and before I forget. The Russian translation into the English alphabet of "bitch" isn't "Stuka," but "suka."

Still, close enough for Veritas to "accidentally" confuse the two.

I would wager that this joke was made many times in WWII.

That depends entirely on how friendly Russia is with other countries at this point in time, I would say. I don't know for sure about this universe's continuity, as I haven't read any of the books.

But as an anecdotal example, I never heard it until a friend of mine, whose parents emigrated from Russia, said it.

However, I grant that someone in another country with greater contact with the Russian language would likely hear all the juicy swear words first.

Forgive me, I was referring to the historical WWII, not our version thereof.

For those who don't know, the Stuka was the German name for the Ju-87 Dive bomber, one of the most iconic weapons of WWII. It is from that plane that I derived the name of the SS breed of dragons.

What on Earth makes you think 1940s Brits weren't racist (in general)? They were. They just aren't Southerners.

Thus they don't have the HangUps the Southerners did.

Cyncat, forgive me if I've mis-interpreted your IC post, but Hermecritus is not a lightweight. He's a Light-Heavyweight, same as Frostfell, albeit of slightly more uncertain pedigree. You two both weigh about the same amount, though Frostfell is slightly bigger (specifically longer).

My intent is not to be pestilent, but Havoc - would Veritas be almost done with the vet by now? Or will this be quite a bit longer?

Forgive my quiet in this thread recently. I have been laid low by death-illnesses of various sorts, and am presently trying to consume a bowl of chicken soup broth and keep it down... this time. I will post whenever I can.
