Character Sheet:
Name: Jonathan Carpenter
Ship: The San Juan
Race: Human
Description: Jonathan Carpenter a now 1.7m and a solidly built 84Kg was born on a fairly back water colony that was part of a post Romulan-Federation refugee relocation program, the colony’s original planet being rendered uninhabitable after several ships crash-landed due to a battle in orbit. Their warp cores and impulse engines leaked and damaged the local ecology causing a cascade effect that was irreparable by the time anyone got around to trying to fix it. After the relocation the colony adopted a form of neo-luddism, blaming warp technology for the war and their subsequent troubles they decided to go all post warp technology in order to preserve a more simple way of life.
Jon however was born a naturally curious and motivated individual and the life of his parents simply did not suit him. From an early age he began exploring the world around him trying to learn everything he could which did not always sit well with his parents. Finally one fateful day a cargo transport had to make an emergency landing on his home planet, the leaders of the colony kindly asked them to leave wanting nothing to do with their modern technology, the owners of the ship made some quick repairs and obliged. However, Jonathan had stowed aboard the ship realizing that this was his one and only chance of ever reaching the stars he was discovered shortly after the cargo ship entered warp but he was allowed to stay on the condition that he earned his keep. He remained on the ship for two years, bringing himself up to speed on warp mechanics and modern technology before enrolling in Starfleet academy. After graduation he was assigned a position as tactical officer and worked quickly through the ranks eventually rising to chief tactical officer and head of security. He distinguished himself in the dominion war and as a result was given command of the USS San Juan an upgraded version of the Steamrunner designed to target borg ships midway through the borg invasion.
Personality: Jonathan has a larger than life personality in many ways he is out going curious and very driven, when he sets his sights on a goal he pursues it passionately. He has not completely forgotten his parents way of thinking and as a result is hesitant of any technology he feels could make someone lazy, thus he is rarely found on a holodeck unless he is instructing a training exercise. To this end he also sees the borg as the embodiment of what can happen when technological dependence goes awry. From his crew he is well respected he fights for them to be supplies with exactly what they need and what he feels they deserve. Additionally he strongly encourages them to train vigilantly against the continued threat of the borg, including requiring his crew to be proficient in the use of seemingly antiquated projectile weapons which have been proven repeatedly to be successful against borg boarding parties.

This is turning into one hell of a fleet so far. Welcome, Shark Bait!
More seriously, I can definitely see the balance of power shifting after the dust settles from the second Borg war. This is going to be very interesting.

Prelude:
"Lieutenant Commander's Personal Log, Stardate 58250.3."
"I had another dream last night about Red Squad."
"I was at the reception at the academy rotunda for the cadets that had been selected to go with Captain Ramirez on the USS Valiant, talking with Tim Waters, lying through my teeth about how glad I was for him being chosen as the command-track candidate over me, and trying to find things to say to him that didn't involve the words 'ass-kissing weasel'. I don't remember the platitudes I came up with, but I doubt he believed them any more than I meant them. I still don't know if he pulled strings or not to beat me out for the position. I probably never will."
"In the last couple months, I've been starting to feel a little more sympathetic to him."
"Ereshal says I'm worrying too much, and that it's going to come back to bite me if I don't try to focus on the present, but Aenar are trained to focus their minds even more intently than Vulcans, so it's easy for her to say. She's afraid I'm obsessing about what happened to Tim and the Valiant, and I'm not, really, but it's hard not to think about it. Tim died seven years ago trying to bring down a Jem'Hadar Battleship with the Valiant, got himself and his entire crew killed, along with his ship, largely by being his own stubborn self. Valiant was a Defiant-class ship, with a crew of cadets, and a captain who didn't know when to stop."
"And I can't shake the reminder that Trafalgar was built off a Defiant-class hull, that her crew's one of the youngest in Starfleet, and that I'm not exactly known for taking things slow and steady..."
"There was a Ferengi in the academy a couple years behind Tim and I, one of the only ones who got off the Valiant, who told me that Tim just wasn't ready to command. Not like that was a surprise to me. 'He wound up taking on something way beyond his ability to handle,' that's what the Ferengi said. And in about three days, my ship, my crew, and I, are all about to take on the Borg."
"My crew..."
"My six-month anniversary as commander of Trafalgar's coming up in a couple of weeks. I've made it abundantly clear that I don't want any recognition of it, and for once, I think the crew will listen. It's also the six-month anniversary of Commander Zhao's death, after all. After Starfleet confirmed that I was to stay on in command after his aneurysm, a lot of my old classmates from the academy and Red Squad wrote me mixed condolences and congratulations. I guess it was in order. Not many officers wind up commanding a starship before their thirtieth birthday. I've fought damned hard to be where I am today, but even now, I still have to stop every so often whenever it hits me that I'm the 'old man' that all of us are counting on."
"I guess I shouldn't be complaining. Every single cadet from the academy, including Tim, would have killed to be in the position I'm in. I'd kill to stay here. Trafalgar's a jury-rigged mess, but she's our jury-rigged mess, and she flies like a swallow and fights like a Tarkalian Mastodon. She's a lot tougher than she looks, and for something that looks like a Defiant-class, that's saying something. Her crew's tough too, despite the young faces and the occasional rookie mistake. In the eighteen months since we went out on shakedown, neither Commander Zhao nor I have ever had to approve a single transfer off Trafalgar, and every crewman knows her down to her last bolt and bulkhead. If we give her our all, she'll give us hers."
"Ereshal says I shouldn't try to anthropomorphize Trafalgar, but she just doesn't see her like I do. Telepaths just don't have the tendency to pretend that non-living things are alive. If they can't sense them, then they're just objects. But I know better. Trafalgar's just like the rest of us, stumbling and flawed and bursting at the reigns to go out there and hand the Borg their cybernetic heads. I've literally never seen the crew as keyed up as they have been ever since word came in of our new assignment, and it's bled over into the ship herself. Even Trafalgar's impulse engines stopped acting up, and Joral'vec down in Engineering claims she's in finer shape than she ever has been... not that that's saying much. Ereshal denies it, but even she's excited. After all this time, I can read her like a book. She's scared too of course, but absolutely determined to do her best."
"And so am I, but I can't shake Tim or Valiant from my mind."
"I've taken a lot of risks to get here. A lot of stupid, thoughtless risks, all in the name of what seemed like a good idea at the time. I've been way luckier than I deserve to be. I didn't get censured after that incident on Io only because Admiral Leyton took pity on me. If Captain Vorek and I hadn't had our final break at just the moment we did, I'd have probably wound up posted to some Starbase in the Badlands by now. I don't know what I did to get Admiral Janeway on my side, but if she hadn't made the recommendation, someone else would have been brought in to take over Trafalgar after Commander Zhao's death. Up until now, I took risks that threatened to derail my career, or even get me killed. They used to call me 'Crazy Ivan'."
"But now I've got a ship, my ship, that I've commanded either as First officer or CO since she was launched, and 43 people aboard her who will all get killed if I screw up. And I'm on an assignment that's going to involve us swallowing enormous risks just to stay alive."
"Now I know why Kirk used to smuggle Romulan Ale aboard the Enterprise..."
"I know Trafalgar's limitations. I know them better than anybody, given that she's showed them to me with maddening frequency for the last eighteen months. I know, roughly, what my crew can do, and what we can't do. Commander Zhao made damned sure I learned how to rely on them, and on the rest of the officers, and I know how to do that. I know Ereshal will pull me back from the edge if I ever start biting too much off, because she's smarter than I am, and a lot more level-headed. A warship is hardly what I'd call the first choice for someone who's from a race of pacifists, but then she did run away from them to join Starfleet. I've never gotten the full story of what happened back on Andor out of her, and I've stopped asking. I'm very glad she's here, and I know I can trust her to keep me in line."
"I have no idea if I'm ready for this. I know how to fake it to the rest of the crew, and that the captain always knows what to do, especially when he doesn't. I know that they're all looking to me to make it through whatever the hell's about to happen. I know the combat maneuvers we've worked out by heart, I can see the attack patterns in my sleep, I've read up on every battle the Defiant ever fought in, every battle a Defiant-class Destroyer's ever fought in. I've played simulations, reviewed lectures, run computer tests with random variables thrown in just for the hell of it. I still don't know."
"I can't get over the look on Tim's face, the last time I saw him. How absolutely certain he was that he had what it took. He was Red Squad. He was the best the Federation had to offer. He had the finest crew of cadets and young officers that anyone had ever assembled for any purpose, and one of the sleekest, newest, most deadly warships ever to roll off the shipyards. And he rode all of those things right off a cliff."
"In Trafalgar, I've got a ship that would put even the Valiant to shame. In my crew, I've got one of the finest collections of young officers and crewmen that anyone will ever see. In Ereshal, I've got the best First Officer that the Academy has ever produced, and a true and close friend besides. And I've got a job to do that even Tim would hesitate before taking on."
"I'm not just risking myself anymore."
"My name is Brevet Commander Ivan Kalpov, of the Federation Starship Trafalgar, and so help me God, I will not let down my crew, my ship, or my friend. No matter what it takes, I will not get them killed on my watch. Starfleet officers have to take risks, and commanding officers have to risk the lives of their crews, and ships, and friends, we all know that. But Tim forgot what happens when you roll the dice one too many times."
"I will never allow myself to forget what happened to him... and why."
"End Log."

everything's looking good so far....
while the preludes aren't needed..it's nice to see them, as it gives a lil extra life to the characters.
I'll be using a limited GM-ship in the game, feel free to take control of NPC's as may be required. Weave a good story, but if you start making impossible victories or what not, I will step up my hand.

Prelude 2
Captain's log stardate 5532.3
"It is day ten our one month shakedown cruise, I would prefer if it were longer to get all the possible kinks worked out, but we cannot always get what we want and we are needed on the front lines as soon as possible. To that end the USS San Juan is scheduled to meet up with us inside the week to escort us on the rest of our shakedown and then join us in Taskforce Damocles. I have heard some things about their captain, one Jonathen Carpenter, all of them good, he should be at least unique to work with. One of the other captains however seems to profess a love of and idolizes a certain 23rd century starship captain who shall also remain nameless in my log. I hope he works out better than I think he will.
I am already going over the ships schematics and seeing what improvements I can make. There will come a time when the borg assimilate some of our weapons and we will be forced to contend with our own medicine. Shielding technology has not scaled with weapon yield I am afraid. I will have to talk to the captain of one of the other captains in my new battlegroup. Captain Augustus of the USS Firelance. His cruiser, a new Salamander Class has an interesting new heat sink system that may have some applications to that end. I will have to see about him letting me on his ship to see what can be done, and to see if I can adapt my fighters, if my ideas work."
a little beep came from his communicator, he tapped it and responded
"Captain?"
"Yes Tl Trei?"
"We have a distress call, The freighter USS Long Haul, carrying dilithium. They are being attacked by, of all things, pirates. They are fleeting at maximum warp but their engines cannot sustain those speeds and will be forced into impulse in three hours."
"Can we get to them before then?"
"Yes captain, we can get to them right as they drop out of warp if we go now at warp 8.7. We are the closest ship in the area"
"Signal them and have Lt Hikara plot an intercept course. I will be on the bridge in two minutes"
"yes sir"
...
Three hours later...
The USS Thermoplyae dropped out of warp just as the Long Haul did pursued by a ship with a crescent shaped primary hull with an extending "claw" at the front
"Is that a Ferengi Marauder?" Captain Belkin asked "I can hardly believe what I am seeing... Mr. Norg?"
"Your eyes do not deceive you captain. With Quark in charge of the Ferengi Alliance, he has instituted at least some regulations. This has driven some ferengi to outright piracy"
"I see. Go to red alert and open a hailing channel to the Long Haul and the Ferengi ship"
"yes sir" replied Lt Trei as a little red light flashed with the federation warning klaxon going off, and the seat belts automatically engaging those sitting in their console chairs.
"This is Captain Matthew Belkin of the USS Thermopylae to Ferengi vessel, you will power down your weapons and prepare to be boarded and arrested on charges of piracy. You have twenty seconds to comply"
"They are replying sir"
"On screen"
The Ferengi captain, in his gaudy clothing with a sash around his lobes replied
"What are you going to do if we do not silly Hu-mon captain? We are much larger than your puny federation vessel, and can both defend ourselves and take this freighter under the Rules of Acquisition." he turned to his tactical officer "target the federation vessel"
Technically he was correct, he might have been able to take down an original Akira protection model if he could get a shot off with his EM pulse cannon to knock down its power reserves.
"Your twenty seconds are up captain" Matthew said "Mr. Sssssirik, open fire with a single Plasma Phaser, and a spread of four quantum torpedoes, target their engines and weapons systems, set standard phasers to intercept fire from their missile launchers. Lt Hikara, plot a straffing run after he fires, they will try to bring their EMP weapon to bare and we cant let that happen, I would just vaporize them but I dont think that would go over well diplomatically
"Yes sir"
And it began. The Akira class ship darted forward as she unleashed a tiny bit of hell on the Ferengi ship. Her plasma phaser battered at her shield, crashing into it like an ocean wave against a crumbly cliff side. But her shields held, then the quantum torpedos hit. SLamming into and washing over the shields as matter combined with antimatter and created a terrific explosion scattering heat radiation and subatomic particles into space.
Through the open channel the bridge crew could see sparks fly and the bridge of the ferengi ship lurch and heave as the shield emitters transferred some of the kinetic force of the weapons fire it just took through the rest of the ship, absorbing the shock to avoid being torn from their mounts. Several of the ferengi crew were knocked over or tossed from their posts as she returned fire with phasers and photon torpedoes, and shot from her missile bays
"Brace for impact!" captain belkin commanded as four type ten phaser bursts and 4 photon torpedoes slammed into the Thermopylae's forward shields, washing over them and causing the ship to shudder, the missiles were intercepted by quick bursts from the phasers
"Damage report?"
"Forward Shieldss holding at 90% and regenerating sir, they barely sscratched us, their forward shieldsss are at 60% sir" Sssssirik replied
"Fire our starboard weapons during this attack run, and with the aft and starboard quantum torpedoes when they come into their fire arc"
As the Thermpolylae came parallel with the Ferengi ship traveling at near a quarter of the speed of light, and still around a light second away, she opened fire with pinpoint accuracy, striking the ferengi ship with ferocity. The torpedoes and phaser fire pounded the ferengi ships starboard side, until it was too much, and the emitters gave out, forced to deal with too much energy too quickly. The field surrouding the ship visibly collapsed in a shower of light and spark, even though the area around the decaying field was saturated with radiation and pi mesons.
"Spin us around, fire aft plasma phaser"
"Sir!"
The carrier beam raked across the ferengi hull causing damage but nothing structural to the ship, until the bolt came. Its searing heat opened a gaping wound in the "neck" between the bridge section and the primary hull, even as the ship opened fire with its phasers and torpedoes, washing over the Thermopylae's shields like water over a beach.
On the Ferengi bridge, they had lost artificial gravity, and members of the crew floated in space, dead. Their blood floating in little spheres
"Arent you glad I put in those seat belts?" Captain belkin asked his crew "Do they still have audio comms?"
"We didnt hit the system"
"Good"
"Captain" Belkin said "You will surrender and prepare to be peaceably boarded, your crew, the ones that are still alive, will receive medical care before being sent back on a medical frigate to a federation starbase where they will be tried. Failure to do so, will result in the vaporization of your ship"
The ferengi resonded, blood flowing from a wound on his face where a piece of material from his un-surge-protected console exploded in his face
"We... surrendur"

Prelude
Captain carpenter sat quietly in his ready room, it was simply appointed with few distractions, the only item that seemed out of place was the antiquated keyboard he now used to type his log. His parents had insisted on this older form of computer use rather than dictation, and he still preferred how it allowed him to collect his thoughts before recording them instead of simply shooting his mouth off.
The San Juan would be joining the USS Thermopylae within a day to escort them on the remainder of her first run with her new crew, new ships with new crews often experienced the unexpected and it was always good to have help near by. Almost on queue his communicator chimed.

This is somewhat annoying, since I want to have a picture of my ship to refer to.
Well, I'll try here in words. Start with the Prometheus in terms of basic hull look and design. The four nacelles in the back are heavily armored and recessed, similar to the Defiant class' nacelles in design. The nacelles form a flattened "X" shape in the back. On the top and bottom are two more nacelles of the same design, forming a total of six.
The forward "saucer" section of the ship is flatter than the Prometheus design, to avoid the top and bottom nacelles sticking out unnecessarily. The sides of the "saucer" are flattened at the widest point of the saucer curve (back near where the nacelles connect), forming a smaller, hardened nacelle on each side that contains the side plasma phaser mounts.
As opposed to the usual light grey for the outer hull of the ship, owing to new alloys in its composition it is now a dark greyish color.

the U.S.S. Alexander complete with Mk I Plasma Phaser Cannon.
some minor things which I should have noted before.....
1) For one....this is a Trek game. Not a "Make Trek what I want it to be" game. We're using what we've seen in the Trek movies and shows, along with some added tech and extrapolation of things, to play in this game. So despite all nifty and new your ships are with the new fangled weapon systems....you are not going to be able to gut your entire ship and put in "safer" technology. Work with what you have.
2) Those of you in newer classes of Starships (I.E. rheonix and Havoc)....your ships are basically new, off the assembly line. Your going to be working your crews just to keep up with the repairs and bugs....the Trafalgar less so since it's basically a rework of a older, tested design.
You aren't gonna be able to take your ship, and rewire everything. You may be able to come up with some modifications which can be added later...but for the most part, your ships are the first of their kinds, untried and untested. Don't go off all eager to "improve" things when you still need to work the factory bugs out. (Just because you been out of shakedown doesn't mean all the kinks are out of the ship yet).
3) Just because you can come up with a idea that'll work on your ship...doesn't mean it'll work on everyone elses. I'm pointing this out because of the design fundamentals between ships....the Salamander class is new out the fleet yards, with entirely new plumbing. What works on it, may not work on the San Juan, because the systems are older in design, or the ship is wired differently.
4) Certain technologies simply won't be usable. Ablative armor generators, for examples, are NOT being used for anything. They are still classified tech back at SFHQ. I just finished telling rheonix last night concerning the ablative armor generators - no they cannot be used to make "field repairs" or "protective bubbles". No you cannot replicate them on your ship, your computers do not even have files on them. Even if they were installed, the Borg adapted to the Generators during the Voyager Episode "End Game" and can disable the abaltive armor generators remotely, making your ship a sitting duck.

Notes: An outgrowth of the success of the Sovereign and Prometheus projects, a larger class was already being developed by the time the tragedy of Wolf 359 occurred. This incident helped to hone the design of the ship, bringing it to terrible fruition.
The Salamander class is somewhat unique among most Starfleet combat-capable ships, as it uses the heavy Plasma Phaser Cannons (unofficially nicknamed "Hellbore Cannons") as its main beam armament, rather than the standard classes of phaser designs. This was chosen due to its non-frequency based direct-energy qualities, and refined further as the Salamander class was being designed. Upgraded pulse phasers are still used as an armament, but their use is typically relegated to point-defense on this class of ship.
Resembling a Prometheus hull scaled up and slightly stretched out, the Salamander class has a bulkier nacelle frame in proportion. It also has larger side nacelles, and two nacelles on the top and bottom as well. The top and bottom nacelles are warp nacelles as well as mounts for one Plasma Phaser embankment and one isokinetic cannon each, whereas the side nacelles each have two Plasma Phaser embankments each, as well as being warp nacelles. The six total warp nacelles accounts for the ship's rather high speed, and better than average maneuverability.
The Salamander class is designed to give a target a hard and unrelenting bombardment from well outside their weapons' range, thus providing dependable long-range capabilities to Starfleet. In addition to primarily using its Plasma Phasers as medium, long, and extreme-range weapons, the two large isokinetic cannons heavily supplement the Plasma Phasers, as this ship curiously lacks torpedo launchers. However, it was determined that the Borg would have far greater difficulty adapting to these weapons due to their very nature.

Uh, the Phoenix name is already in use. USS Phoenix is a sensor pod Nebula. It was featured in the episode The Wounded in TNG, and I'm pretty sure it hasn't been destroyed yet.

Fisher's got a point.
the Pheonix is a Sensor Pod Nebula, it's not blown to kingdom come yet.
Choose another mythical birds name.
While we're on the subject...the Salamander Class is to new and rare to have two of them in the same task force. The first five are just coming off the assembly line maybe a month before, and it takes time to build them. (being a newer design with new technologies).
Please chose another class of ship.

Alright, cut me some slack tho. I've never really watched the show.

That one's my fault. I was the one who suggested the names of the other Salamander-classes to Rhoenix. I didn't know that there was already a USS Phoenix.

Since I was the one who prodded him into joining, I'll throw in my two cents - Haizu's first choice was a stealth ship, but I wasn't sure whether DS would allow it (what with that whole Federation & Romulan treaty that says the Federation can't play with stealth tech). So, the Salamander was his second choice.Haizu wrote:Alright, cut me some slack tho. I've never really watched the show.
As far as I can see it, we need a good scout (a modified or upgunned Intrepid or similar-sized class would work nicely for that), we need a good specialty torpedo boat, we could use a repair ship (though that one's rather unglamorous), and a few other types as well, I'm sure.

I was thinking of running a Sovereign class instead then if DS will allow it.
