I don't see why this is particularly astonishing.
It is quite evident that there are varying degrees of sapience all over this planet. More evidence here.

You know, I bet that cats would be using tools had they evolved with opposable thumbs...
Other than that, it's not really a surprise that a gorilla is using tools, they were going to sooner or later.

It's not a so much a surprise, as conformation of what we suspected.

Heh. You and I, on the other hand, have pummeled this topic at length.
Of course, that guy probably never really said it, and his institute just issued a press release quoting him saying that so the press can go "OMG!1!" even though some unpaid intern stuck the words in his mouth.
(I know because I did it a lot during the summer.)
