#1 Scientific outreach: providing clergy a resource

Post by Ace Pace »

Ars, who else?
Any of you who've read my writing here over an appreciable length of time know that science outreach and science education are major concerns of mine. So, it's always a pleasure to report on some positive efforts being made along these lines. Today's news in this regard comes courtesy of a long-running effort called the Clergy Letter Project.

Initially started as an ad-hoc attempt to enlist clergy in an effort to protect science education in a single school district in Wisconsin, the project has evolved (pun intended) into a general statement on the compatibility of science and faith, and the place of evolution as "a foundational scientific truth." The letter has been hosted by the Dean of Butler University's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and under his guidance has attracted nearly 11,000 signatures from members of the clergy over the last three years.

Now, scientists are being given a chance to get involved. The project will be hosting a list of scientists that are willing to serve as resources for clergy members that have technical questions about the science behind the theory of evolution. So far, in the first week of operation, this effort has attracted over 180 volunteers, including at least one in every state.

To me, this is a great opportunity for scientists to do some outreach in a way that can make a significant difference. In general, much of the opposition to evolution, especially in regards to education, arises from two factors: a lack of knowledge of the detailed evidence for the theory, and trusted figures that argue against it. This is an opportunity to ensure that more of the trusted figures out there have the chance to get the science right.

Simply calling on clergy to support scientific education would be a facile solution when the clergy is exposed to the same false doubt and misinformation regarding evolution that we all see on a far too regular basis. This is a chance for scientists to ensure that the clergy can provide that sort of support from a position of knowledge and understanding.

I feel compelled to note that this effort won't be for everyone; make sure you really know your stuff, how to communicate it, and be willing to work with clergy of a variety of denominations before volunteering.

Mayabird:You see what this place does to us? It's like how Eskimos have their 16 names for snow. We have to precisely define what shafting we're receiving.

"Do we think Israel would be nuts enough to go back into Lebanon with Olmert still in power and calling the shots? They could hook Sharon up to a heart monitor and interpret the blips and bleeps as "yes" and "no" and do better than that, both strategically and emotionally."
