Every channel, every blog. A suspected nuclear weapons test last night in the northern part of the country.

Mind you, I'm with Arms Control Wonk's Jeffery Lewis, from the League of Atomic Scientists.

A few hundred tons to a kiloton, based on seismic readings, indicates you fail, Kim. You fail at a fission device.

As they say, more as it breaks.

So he can't launch a missle and he can't achieve fission?

Perfect combination if you ask me. Warhead won't go off but that's okay because it isn't going to hit anything anyway.

Perfect from my viewpoint. I say we continue to refuse one on one talks, hell let him dangle a bit.

A working nuke was suppose to be his hole card, his hole card has been revealed as a 2 when he needed an ace.

It seems they may have used the A Khan (the nuclear sciencist from Pakistan who admitted to selling nuclear tech to N Korea, Libya and Iran, you may remember him?) gun device. This is the same device that "fizzled" when the Pakistanis tried to test it.

Does no one know how to double check?

Wait, maybe I shouldn't complain, never mind.

Was that last sentence an intentional pun? But yeah, he fails at 1945 technology.

I wonder how much of NK's resources got sunk into this. Probably not enough to cause a collapse from the inside, but might it hasten a collapse?

If I was a nervious Nork General (instead I'm a nervious American Ex-Cpl, funny how that works out) and I saw my sawed off runt of a "dear leader" pissing off the most powerful nation in the world... and vastly more importent pissing off China, my one and only lifeline to stave off complete and total societial collaspe...

All I needs is to catch hims in his sleep. To parapharse a character in a western I saw once.

Second bang confirmed by the US Geological Survey. This one very definately sub-kiloton.

Kim, you fail.

So I heard the North Koreans threatened to attack with nukes if the US didn't talk to them, and the first thing that runs my mind is: You're going to attack us with your nukes that don't go off properly, and which won't fit on the missiles you can't get across the Sea of Japan.

Right. Do they have any real political credibility left?

No. no they don't.

China is in a hell of a snit I hear. Not only has N Korea gone against their wishes (welcome to the club of having allies that constantly annoy you! N Korea is now your France.) but they failed, this not only makes N Korea look dumb, but to China's way of thinking it's made them look dumb to.

China wishes that North Korea was only as bad as France. At least the French doen't steal other people's trains.

Ok..two failed nuclear tests, and failed ICBM testings.

So.......how exactly are we to be scared?

Because the North Koreans have t3h nukes!!! Fear them!!!

In retrospect, I suppose it's almost funny that for all of North Korea's bluster, they can't even take on Modern Day France with any hope of victory, much less the more powerful and influential countries out there, like the USA, for instance. It's also rather sad that the Bush maladministration will villify Iran for starting a nuclear power program, and then turn a blind eye to the North Koreans actually detonating a nuclear device.

All in all, if North Korea tries to nuke the USA at any point in the near future (provided that they manage to actually build nukes, mind); the first nuclear war in history will be long remembered as also being a rather short one. What the North Koreans seem to forget, from what I can see, is that the USA has a sixty year head start.
