'Crocodile Hunter' Irwin killed wrote:Australian environmentalist and television personality Steve Irwin has died during a diving accident.

Mr Irwin, 44, was killed by a stingray barb to the chest while he was filming an underwater documentary in Queensland's Great Barrier Reef.

Paramedics from the nearby city of Cairns rushed to treat him at the scene but were unable to save him.

Mr Irwin was known for his television show The Crocodile Hunter and his work with native Australian wildlife.

Police in Queensland confirmed the naturalist's death and said his family had been notified.

"It is believed that Mr Irwin collapsed after being stung by a stingray at Batt Reef off Port Douglas at about 11:00 am (0100 GMT)," a police statement quoted by AFP news agency said.

"His crew called for medical treatment and the Queensland medical helicopter responded, however Mr Irwin had died."

Mr Irwin had built up what was a small reptile park in Queensland into what is now Australia Zoo, a major centre for Australian wildlife.

He was famous for handling dangerous creatures such as crocodiles, snakes and spiders, and his documentaries on his work with crocodiles drew a worldwide audience.

He leaves a wife, Terri, and two young children.
Sad, but if you've seen his shows, you knew something like this would happen one day. A good naturalists and a performer capable of really reeling in the masses and garnering support for his causes.

Damn it, you beat me to it.

I am sorry forhis wife and kids... but damn did he have it coming. It was a ticking time-bomb just waiting to happen.

He was irresponsible and foolhardy, he may have loved the animals, but he didnt RESPECT them.

He may not have deserved what he got in the cosmic sense, but his luck ran out.

And fuck, of all the things to kill him...a god damn stingray impaling him through the chest.

It's always the thing that you aren't worried about enough to watch.

My condolences to the wife and kids.

It's a stingray. You have to REALLY piss them off before they will stick you. You have to step on them, violently grab them. You can handle them in tanks, I have seen people hand feed them by the dozens, have there by a stingray feeding frenzy, and not once did she get stuck.

well if he's cliff diving and hit the water and the stingray beneath him that would either impale him by din of hitting stingray at a bad angle or piss it off enough to counterattack.

Honestly, thats not how I saw him going--it's terrible, in my opinion. More of a freak accident than anything, as I've been reading. Quite a shame...quite a shame.

I feel sorry for his 2 kids and his wife.

BUt you also have top take into consideration that when she married him she knew what he did. Not to mention he knew that there were risks in what he did.

The irony that he went as he did, is just one fo those things that happen to make the rest of us think.

Life's a gift, are you living it?
