#1 What joystick do you use?

Post by Batman »

What the topic says. Which (if any) joystick do you use, and why?
Me, I've got a Saitek Cyborg 3D.
It's a 4-axis 4 (theoretically 8) button stick with a hat and was, at the time, the only left-handed (well, technically neutral but configurable for left/right handed) stick on the market, and frankly, I still love it. I just wish the throttle would go to 100% without forcing it.
I don't play actual flight sims all that much, but for space arcade fighter sims (XvT, Alliance, Privateer Remake etc) it works like a charm.
OH, and a CH something-or-other 2 button 2 axis stick on my beta PC. Because it was there.

CH and Thrustmaster HOTAS sets for serious flightsims (which I'm playing a littles less and less these days), Logitech Wingman USB for space shooters / arcade sims.

Because my Forcefeedback 2 died, and I don't play realistic sims.

I use my joystick for FS2 and Mechwarrior, I don't need percise adjustments or 20 million buttons. I can live on 6 on the stick.

I know, but Ace uses Saitek Cyborg too, and from what I've heard, it offers a quiten lot of functionality for a non-HOTAS setup. Is that true? Will it make a better replacement for my Logitech Wingman?

It's nice, but I'll admit I'm using 10% of the available functionality. I'm using the thruster, the top 6 buttons and hat. None of the side buttons, no shift, no macros.

Same here. It does everything I need it to and I don't use it to the full extend of its capabilites. I don't use the four buttons on the base nor the shift function (you can have two functions on each button) and I can't remember the last time I bothered to program it.

I have a Saitek Cyborg 3D Gold USB. I plan on getting X52 when I have the means/reason to get a HOTAS.

When I have the gumption, I use just about every aspect of the sticks, including macros and shifters. Back when I had my X36 for Mechwarrior 3, I had all sorts of functions tied to the HOTAS, squad commands, coolant flushing, jump jets, the works.

I've made various macros for some games, most specifically I-War 2, where I created a macro that throws all TRI power to weapons when the trigger is pressed, fires continuously, then resets power to normal when you let go of the trigger.

They're fantastic sticks, reasonable in price, and with some great functionality.

Hotfoot: *blinks* What? I use that for everything from piloting mecha to X-wing fighters! Then there's my Saitek P750 joypad, and my multi-function keyboard, and my 19" monitor. All of which help me on a good day of senseless annihilation.

As a matter of fact back in the CBM64 days I actually broke a good number of joysticks (some of them literally) and that was sure as hell not because they were particularly fragile. The 'Games' series and Decathlon were murder on joysticks.

I hold my own genitals and control the computer with my mind.

(Man, it's been a long time since I actually played anything that used a joystick, PS2 games aside, now that I think about it...)

Well based on my experience, CH sticks are still unmatched in durability; my CH stick still retains its precision and spring tension after all these years --the same years where I have been replacing various Logitech Wingman sticks.

But of course, those CH sets (stick, throttle, pedals) are not USB

Well I got my Cyborg back when it came out ('98 or thereabouts) and it's still working perfectly. And what's wrong with using the game port?

Um, it means I couldn't use the CH with my laptop.

On the other hand, one does not usually carry a HOTAS set around either.

There are adapters you can buy that can hook it up to USB ports but I wouldn't know where to look. My now dead Microsoft Sidewinder came with one.

The X52 feels like it is made from cheap plastic compare to the 45 which I is what I use.

If I "cascade" my stick, throttle, and pedals (something I do with my Thrustmasters), can the adapter recognize the configuration?

Logitech Force 3D Pro. BUT I don't have any games to use it with. Played X3 for a while but got over that too quickly. Nowadays there isn't any games fit for the joystick (and I am not into flight sims).

I miss Descent. But even those games are better fit for the gamepad.

How people play even highly unrealistic flightsims with a gamepad is a complete mystery to me. Hell how people play ANYTHING with a gamepad is a mystery to me.

Um, fighting games?

But you're correct about the former; even the highly unrealistic Freelancer is supposed to be played with mouse and keyboard instead of a bloody gamepad.

Microsoft Force Feedback Pro (Sidewinder family). Say what you will about Microsoft, they make damn fine joysticks. I've had this one since MechWarrior 3 came out. It's only flaw is its size (rather bulky, being one of those 1st-gen force feedback things).

Prior to this one I had an MS 3D Sidewinder Pro. It still works like a dream, I just don't have a use for it.
