The CD writer, I mean. I'm using LiteOn 52x24x52x
See, tonight I wasted my time trying to backup the content of my laptop. It takes about 25 CDs. Yes, the total space is not that large, but I tend to keep things organized (grouping my files in certain category and place them the CDs accordingly), so there.
Being cautious I am, I was using 8x writing speed to make the CD compatible with older drives. Also, based on my experience, writing with 16x speed or above tend to make the result 'unstable' (you can read them on some drive, but not on some others). Well it was almost 6AM when my job was almost finished, and I guessed everything was alright.....
But whoa, what is this? Turned out the resulting CDs were ALL FUCKING FUCKING FUCKING UNREADABLE.
AAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRGHHHH!!!!!!!!
And no, I ain't using the old, 6x CD ROM drive on my DOS-legacy system. No, no, no. I tested them on my laptop, which is using a DVD/CD ROM drive, so there should be no excuse.
Turned out writing with even 8x speed really fucks up the result. And I just found out that the *only* way to make the CD readable is to write with 4x speed. 4x speed! Slower than tortoise on fucking Valium!!!
The moral of the story:
If you're using LiteOn drive to write your CD, make sure to write NO FASTER than 4x. Or better, don't ever buy that shit on the first place.
Don't buy LiteOn

So be it. If saying "NO" means being alone, then to hell with love, with romance, with marriage, and all the shit life keeps pumping at me. I'll walk alone, but with freedom and a healed pride.
NEVER buy a LiteOn CD/DVD Writer. Ever.

Gah! I'm glad I don't have a Liteon drive. I'm definitely making note not to buy one in the future.

Ah, there are uses for buying quality.
KAN, just use Plextor, sure, you pay through the nose but it works.

All these times, I always thought that CD drives, unlike video cards or sound cards, are nothing but commodity. Turned out I was wrong. So is Plextor the nVidia-equivalent in CD drives?Ace Pace wrote:Ah, there are uses for buying quality.

Plextor is a premium brand; they have a very, very good reputation for high quality, but you pay extra for buying a Plextor drive. I wouldn't call nVidia a premium brand (especially as you don't pay extra for the nVidia name), they're just a very competitive video card maker.
If you're in the market for a burner, I (and just about the whole SH/SC forum over at SA) highly recommend NEC's 3500 series DVD burners. Newegg has the 3540A for $40. You simply can't go wrong with one of those. The Plextor equivalent will run you double that price.
As for LiteOn, I haven't heard bad things about them before; be careful about letting your personal experience color your judgement about computer hardware brands, because it can be highly decieving.

Personally, I don't know WTF your problem is truthfully. I've got three different lite-on burners and have never had an issue with ANY of them. I've had a few failed cds but none that were ever finished that failed afterwards. My lite-ons have served me well and will do so in the future. Maybe you have a bad one or something.
