Yeah, come play SMP with us so we can help you along, sans monsters. If you want to play SSP (Survival Single Player), you can go into the options in-game and set the difficulty to 'Peaceful' which will turn off monsters. various programs can do it. For one like what he's got, I think MCMap will work. Speaking of, I need to do one of the libarc server so we can all see a map of our projects Correct, MCMap did it! I really like MCMap, personally. FYI, MCMap is command line only for the Mac, but I can give you a batch...
