I was in Europe less than six weeks before the 2002 switchover, and again about a year later. In 2001, when I was in Italy, it was 2200 lira to the US dollar and the Euro was very close to the buck. So you'd think they'd more or less divide all the prices by 2000, right? One later I come back, the E...

Re: What joystick do you use?
I hold my own genitals and control the computer with my mind.
(Man, it's been a long time since I actually played anything that used a joystick, PS2 games aside, now that I think about it...)

In any event, it's a derail from the original topic, though. Now, in the case of Senator Whoever here, was he really that ignorant, or was he just banking on public ignorance? Either way, it's not a good situation. There is often a great deal of confusion among Americans when it comes to understand...

Bernhard scanned the little houses for sign of an inn. He didn't have a lot of coin in his pocket, but somewhere modest to put up for the night would do just fine. Perhaps, with these fellow travelers to help split the cost, there could even be a room tonight, instead of throwing out the roll on the...

The Borg are about as "evil" as a hive of ants. Granted, technologically superior ants, but insects nonetheless. "Evil" is a side-effect of free will, which for the most part the Borg entirely seem to lack; which, in fact, they seem to do their damndest to squash. They are not malicious for its own ...

Bernhard's eyes narrowed. "You haven't been the only ones dealing with the Chaos-touched out here, clearly. The good news is, someone else around here is watching out for trouble. The bad news is... there are apparently plenty of beastfolk running around in these lands." He looked at the house on th...

"Brother Bernhard, of the Verenan Abbey at Schwergard... though I suppose, really, the 'brother' is optional right now," was Bernhard's reply, as he returned a firm handshake. "I've been making my slow way to Altdorf. Hoping to get some time in the libraries there. Nuln, it turns out, is rather hope...

Bernhard took heart at the sight of the approaching travelers. He'd understimated the distance to the next town (or, he was beginning to suspect, had taken a wrong fork earlier in the day) and didn't relish being alone in the spaces between civilization - not after dark. The open road was no place f...

When a priest says some strange words while holding some sort of specific object in their hand, and something impossible happens, that's a miracle sent by the Gods through the power of prayer. All good and decent folk admire and respect this. When a wizard says some strange words while holding some ...

Bernhard is a 30-year-old human born in Ostermark. As a young lad, he entered the priesthood of Verena and abbeyed in Averland until quite recently, achieving his full ordination before suddenly breaking off his religious devotion to become an academic (i.e. finished Initiate and Priest careers, has...

Game mechanics wise? You have the usual sorts of attributes-- strength and toughness and weapon skill and such-- on a percentile scale. Average unskilled human stats are around 30-- elves trend slightly higher in nimble shit, dwarves in tough shit-- but as characters develop in their careers, attrib...

The War on Drugs itself has done far more harm to this country than drug usage ever will, because it's corrupted our bedrock institutions. Ultimately, I expect, we'll be able to say the same thing about the War on Terror. But not publically, because that will result in a trip to Room 101. --The Eld...

Planescape Torment, by a large margin. Dakarne's complaint about (basically) free-form flexibility in character creation is true, but the point of the game wasn't to make your own character, it was entirely about soaking in an existing character's storyline. But then, my feature is often another man...

We used to (96-98) bring our full-weight airsoft assault rifles (the battery-powered full-auto stuff from Korea, brought back by a friend) to work and have full-on after-hours firefights in the cube farm. I think in this modern age, it's unrealistic to expect leaders to fight on the frontline. Mass distribution of certain and unavoidable death is too cheap and plentiful now. I do, however, think that no leader has the right to order others into fighting without having first been there themselves. --T...
